Chapter 459

Nathanโ€™s expression froze on his face, those deep eyesโ€”usually calmโ€”now flickering with shock.

For a split second, it was like he couldnโ€™t even process what Iโ€™d just said. He let out a short, almost disbelieving laugh. โ€œVictoria, what are you even saying?โ€

I let out a quiet sigh, lifting my eyes to meet his. โ€œIโ€™m saying we should break up.โ€

โ€œBreak up? Is that just for a while, orโ€ฆ forever?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice turned rough, and if you listened closely, you could hear it trembling.

I turned my face toward the window, my voice softening. โ€œForever.โ€

Nathan clenched his jaw, his lips pressed into a tight line. After a long pause, he set his fork down, his voice tinged with self-deprecation. โ€œIs what Mr. Holcomb said true? Was it really you who went to the Jennings family to get me out of trouble?โ€

My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately looked at him. โ€œWhy would Jared tell you that? Isnโ€™t he sticking his nose in too much?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not his fault. I asked him to tell me the truth.โ€ Nathan suddenly stood up and moved to sit next to me. He reached out and took my hand. โ€œWhy are your fingers so cold? Victoria, did Ryan ask you to break up with me?โ€

I took a deep breath, gently pulling my hand back from his grasp. โ€œItโ€™s not exactly a condition, but he did help out. Nathan, you know better than anyone how hard itโ€™s been for you to get here. Letโ€™s try to be rational about this.โ€

Nathanโ€™s eyes suddenly reddened, and the next second, his voice cracked with emotion. โ€œThank you, Victoria. Thank you for helping me when I was lost.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m always happy to help out as a friendโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSo losing you is the cost I have to bear?โ€ Nathan cut me off. He wasnโ€™t angryโ€”just sounded like fate had drained the fight out of him, leaving him a little hollow inside.

โ€œNathan, these are two different things. Us breaking upโ€ฆ itโ€™s because of me. Iโ€™m not someone worth waiting for. I told you before, Iโ€™m not the ending youโ€™re looking for.โ€ I stood up, my thoughts all tangled and messy.

โ€œI never wanted anything in return. Honestly, just stealing a moment with you in the middle of our busy lives already feels like a luxury. Thatโ€™s enough for me.โ€ Nathan stood up too, coming to stand behind me, his voice raw with pain.

I knew he never asked for much, but since this was the deal I made with Ryan, I had to keep my word.

โ€œNathan, you should focus on your career. I truly believe you have a brilliant future ahead of you. Loveโ€ฆ itโ€™s just something insignificant in your lifeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Nathan suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind, holding me so tightly that my mind was in turmoil.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not insignificant. To me, itโ€™s a weight I can hardly bear.โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice broke again, thick with emotion.

I was at a loss for words. Time seemed to freeze between us.

But when it comes to love, the worst thing is to drag it out and leave things unresolved.

Nathan stood rigid, his grip on my waist unyielding. His breath was hot against my neck as he murmured, โ€œDid you fall for him?โ€

I stayed silent.

โ€œNot answering means yes.โ€ Nathan gave a self-mocking laugh. โ€œVictoria, are you really going to be like a fireworkโ€”dazzling for a moment, then gone without a trace?โ€

A dull ache throbbed in my chest. Nathanโ€™s long, silent crush had finally bloomed for a brief moment, only to come full circle and end where it began.

โ€œNathan, donโ€™t do this. Letโ€™s both calm down.โ€ I reached for his hands, trying to pry his fingers away.

Nathan actually let go, stepping back a couple of steps. โ€œAlright, letโ€™s talk this out calmly.โ€
