Chapter 46
Sally didnโt look too happy when we got there, maybe because sheโd lost some money playing cards. Right in front of Jared, she started ranting angrily about her friends from poker.
Making sure I couldnโt see, Jared quickly reached out a bank card and slipped it into Sallyโs hand.
Sallyโs face immediately lit up. โJared, Yvonne is sleeping upstairs. Go check on her.โ
Jared looked at me and said, โGo bring Yvonne down. Then letโs get out of here.โ
I rushed upstairs and found Yvonne lying in bed, breathing a bit heavily, and her face was red.
I placed my hand on her forehead and found she was burning up. I picked her up right away.
Still groggy, Yvonne called out โMommyโ a couple of times. Her little hands clutched tightly around my neck. โMommy, I donโt feel good.โ
As I came down the stairs, Jared came over and took Yvonne from me. As soon as he held her, he realized she had a fever. He turned to Sally. โMom, Yvonne has a fever. Didnโt you notice?โ
Sally jumped up from the couch. โWhat? Sheโs sick? Oh my, I didnโt know. We need to get her to the hospital quickly!โ
Jaredโs face darkened, and without saying another word, he stormed out.
Sally rushed over and grabbed my arm. โIs Jared mad at me? Yvonne was running around all afternoon. I had no idea she was sick.โ
โDonโt worry, Mom. She probably just caught a chill.โ I tried to comfort her, and we headed to the car.
We went straight to the hospital. It was pretty busy that night, and since we didnโt call ahead, we had to wait in line. Luckily, the line moved quickly, and after about ten minutes, it was our turn.
While we waited, Yvonne suddenly threw up. She was so scared, she started crying loudly, clinging to Jared, her face pale. โDaddy, am I going to die? If I die, will you and Mommy have another baby?โ
Jaredโs heart ached as he comforted her. โNo, sweetheart, youโre not going to die. You just caught a cold.โ
โBut you and Mommy still want a baby brother, donโt you?โ Yvonne cried even harder. โI donโt want a baby brother. I just want you and Mommy to love me, just me.โ
Jared looked at me, and I immediately said seriously, โYvonne, donโt be so bossy. Whether we have another baby or not is up to your dad and me, not you.โ
โBut if you have a baby brother, youโll stop loving me. I donโt want that. I donโt want him to take your love.โ Yvonne, likely feverish and confused, blurted out everything in her mind, not caring what we adults thought.
Jared hugged her a little tighter, gently patting her back. โAlright, donโt cry. Mom and Dad arenโt planning to have another baby anytime soon. If youโre not feeling well, just close your eyes and rest, okay?โ
โDaddy, Mommy just wants to have a baby brother because sheโs afraid youโll stop loving her. She takes medicine and goes to the doctor every day. Please donโt have a baby brother with her,โ Yvonne said.
She was crying so hard, and to my surprise, she was blaming me for wanting a son.
I stared at Jared in shock.
Jaredโs lips pressed together as he looked at me, clearly upset.
I felt helpless and speechless. I admit I had been seeing doctors and drinking herbal medicine, making it obvious I wanted a son. But I abandoned that idea now.
