Chapter 46

Sally didnโ€™t look too happy when we got there, maybe because sheโ€™d lost some money playing cards. Right in front of Jared, she started ranting angrily about her friends from poker.

Making sure I couldnโ€™t see, Jared quickly reached out a bank card and slipped it into Sallyโ€™s hand.

Sallyโ€™s face immediately lit up. โ€œJared, Yvonne is sleeping upstairs. Go check on her.โ€

Jared looked at me and said, โ€œGo bring Yvonne down. Then letโ€™s get out of here.โ€

I rushed upstairs and found Yvonne lying in bed, breathing a bit heavily, and her face was red.

I placed my hand on her forehead and found she was burning up. I picked her up right away.

Still groggy, Yvonne called out โ€œMommyโ€ a couple of times. Her little hands clutched tightly around my neck. โ€œMommy, I donโ€™t feel good.โ€

As I came down the stairs, Jared came over and took Yvonne from me. As soon as he held her, he realized she had a fever. He turned to Sally. โ€œMom, Yvonne has a fever. Didnโ€™t you notice?โ€

Sally jumped up from the couch. โ€œWhat? Sheโ€™s sick? Oh my, I didnโ€™t know. We need to get her to the hospital quickly!โ€

Jaredโ€™s face darkened, and without saying another word, he stormed out.

Sally rushed over and grabbed my arm. โ€œIs Jared mad at me? Yvonne was running around all afternoon. I had no idea she was sick.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Mom. She probably just caught a chill.โ€ I tried to comfort her, and we headed to the car.

We went straight to the hospital. It was pretty busy that night, and since we didnโ€™t call ahead, we had to wait in line. Luckily, the line moved quickly, and after about ten minutes, it was our turn.

While we waited, Yvonne suddenly threw up. She was so scared, she started crying loudly, clinging to Jared, her face pale. โ€œDaddy, am I going to die? If I die, will you and Mommy have another baby?โ€

Jaredโ€™s heart ached as he comforted her. โ€œNo, sweetheart, youโ€™re not going to die. You just caught a cold.โ€

โ€œBut you and Mommy still want a baby brother, donโ€™t you?โ€ Yvonne cried even harder. โ€œI donโ€™t want a baby brother. I just want you and Mommy to love me, just me.โ€

Jared looked at me, and I immediately said seriously, โ€œYvonne, donโ€™t be so bossy. Whether we have another baby or not is up to your dad and me, not you.โ€

โ€œBut if you have a baby brother, youโ€™ll stop loving me. I donโ€™t want that. I donโ€™t want him to take your love.โ€ Yvonne, likely feverish and confused, blurted out everything in her mind, not caring what we adults thought.

Jared hugged her a little tighter, gently patting her back. โ€œAlright, donโ€™t cry. Mom and Dad arenโ€™t planning to have another baby anytime soon. If youโ€™re not feeling well, just close your eyes and rest, okay?โ€

โ€œDaddy, Mommy just wants to have a baby brother because sheโ€™s afraid youโ€™ll stop loving her. She takes medicine and goes to the doctor every day. Please donโ€™t have a baby brother with her,โ€ Yvonne said.

She was crying so hard, and to my surprise, she was blaming me for wanting a son.

I stared at Jared in shock.

Jaredโ€™s lips pressed together as he looked at me, clearly upset.

I felt helpless and speechless. I admit I had been seeing doctors and drinking herbal medicine, making it obvious I wanted a son. But I abandoned that idea now.
