Chapter 461

Nathan let out a self-deprecating laugh. โ€œJaredโ€™s your ex-husband and a sharp businessman. We actually have a lot in common. Now that weโ€™re both just passersby in your life, weโ€™ve got even more to talk about.โ€

I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment and forced a laugh. โ€œIf you guys want to talk business, fine, but leave me out of your conversations from now on.โ€

โ€œWe werenโ€™t talking behind your back or anything,โ€ Nathan said quickly, thinking I was mad at them for gossiping. โ€œWe were just curious about what kind of future you might have.โ€

โ€œThanks, but you really donโ€™t need to worry about me,โ€ I said, picking up my fork and going back to my meal. โ€œIโ€™ve got my own plans.โ€

โ€œVictoria,โ€ Nathan said, trying to persuade me, โ€œif work ever feels too much, you really donโ€™t have to keep at it. The company dividends from now on will be more than enough for you to live comfortably.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t do that,โ€ I replied. โ€œI actually enjoy being busyโ€“it makes me feel fulfilled.โ€

Nathan suddenly laughed. โ€œI always thought you werenโ€™t the type to chase after powerful men. Looks like I misjudged you.โ€

โ€œChasing power?โ€ I arched a brow. โ€œYou think I broke up with you just because Ryanโ€™s family has more influence?โ€

Nathan nodded. โ€œI get it. Iโ€™m not saying thatโ€™s a bad thing.โ€

I hesitated, but honestly, there was no point in dodging the topic. Chasing strength is normalโ€“no one wants to struggle if they donโ€™t have to.

โ€œYeah, the Jennings family is definitely more powerful,โ€ I said, โ€œbut Iโ€™m not after anything big. I never planned on marrying Ryan.โ€

Nathan stared at me for a moment, then let out a laugh. โ€œSo Ryanโ€™s just another passerby in your life too? Guess that makes things feel a bit more fair for me.โ€

โ€œThere are so many ways to live a life,โ€ I said, lowering my gaze with a wry smile. โ€œLife has so many dimensionsโ€”no single right answer. If you get hung up on chasing some perfect ending, youโ€™re just making things harder on yourself.โ€

โ€œSo,โ€ Nathan said, his voice full of meaning, โ€œare you saying the one Iโ€™m waiting for might come back to me someday?โ€

I looked up at him, in disbelief.

After I told him to move on and find someone else, he still ended up right back here, saying heโ€™d wait for me.

โ€œWhen you say things like that, it really puts a lot of pressure on me,โ€ I said, frustrated by how stubborn he was. โ€œAnd how long do you plan to wait? What if we only meet again when weโ€™re old and gray? Your life matters tooโ€“donโ€™t put it on hold just for me.โ€

Nathan nodded, surprisingly easygoing. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll keep looking and waiting at the same time. No need for you to feel pressured.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you understand what I mean?โ€ I asked, exasperated.

โ€œI do,โ€ Nathan replied, then with a teasing smirk, added, โ€œEven Mr. Holcomb is still waiting for you. Maybe I should just get in line too, huh?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no way heโ€™s waiting for me,โ€ I said, biting my lip. โ€œHeโ€™s got plenty of options.โ€

Nathan shook his head with a wry smirk. โ€œTrust me, men can read each other best. Jared might not say it, but itโ€™s obvious he wants to get back together with you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s over between us,โ€ I said firmly.

โ€œYou two have a kid together,โ€ Nathan said, sounding almost a little jealous. โ€œThat means youโ€™ll always be connected in this life.โ€

I was taken aback for a second, then said, โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™ve put most of my money into your company. That ties me to you even more. I care more about money than anything else.โ€

Nathanโ€™s eyes froze for a moment, then he smiled and nodded. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a point there.โ€

Honestly, I never thought things would end up like thisโ€“going from breaking up with Nathan to just chatting calmly like nothing happened. I figured heโ€™d blow up at me, maybe accuse me or just storm off.

Looks like I didnโ€™t know him as well as I thought. He actually managed to stay so cool about it all.

Guess guys are just naturally better at keeping their cool, while us girls are the ones who get all worked up.

When Nathan found out Iโ€™d asked the Jennings family to help him out of his company crisis, he actually thanked me for it. Just goes to show heโ€™s got good character.

We ended up chatting over dinner until after nine. I didnโ€™t touch a drop of alcohol, but Nathan was already halfway drunk.

His handsome face was tinged with red, and every so often, I caught a flash of tenderness in his eyesโ€“feelings he quickly tried to hide.
