Chapter 460
I turned to look at him. There was no anger in his eyes anymore, and even the hurt seemed to have faded a little.
โReally?โ If he was willing to talk things through, maybe we could actually end things peacefully, both of us moving on.
Nathan nodded. โYeah. Just say whateverโs on your mind. Iโm here.โ
I stared at him, momentarily stunned. There was a strange, almost crazy calmness about him right now.
โWhat Iโm saying is, you should put your energy into building your company. Once your business really takes off, maybe youโll meet someone truly special.โ I sat back down, sipping my water as I spoke.
โYou really think Iโll meet someone else?โ Nathan asked, taking a sip of his wine, his eyes locked on me.
I nodded. โOf course. Love flows, like water. It never stays the same. Right now, Iโm the one you care about, but your life is long. Who knows who youโll meet down the road? Maybe one day youโll find someone even more interesting, someone whose soul really matches yours.โ
โYeah, maybe.โ Nathan didnโt seem to be taking my words to heart. He just quietly finished his wine and poured himself another half glass.
Iโd tried everything to get him to look forward, to be excited about what the future might bring, but why did he look so uninterested?
Maybe everything I said was just pointless.
โNathan, weโll still be friendsโand business partners. I really hope you can take your company even further. And honestly, Iโve got my own selfish reasonsโI want to invest, so Iโll be a shareholder. If you make money, I get a cut too.โ I smiled.
โAlright, Iโll make sure you donโt lose money.โ Nathan nodded. โYouโll come to the shareholder meetings, right?โ
I nodded. โOf course. Iโll be keeping a close watch on everything going on at your company.โ
Nathan chuckled. โMaybe you should invest a bit moreโthen youโll be even more interested in what Iโm up to.โ
โWhere would I get that kind of money?โ I let out a bitter laugh.
Nathan looked at me steadily. โIโll give you five percent of my shares.โ
โWhat?โ I stared at him in disbelief. โI donโt need that.โ
โItโs my decision.โ Nathan looked down at his wine glass. โWithout you, I wouldnโt be where I am now. Youโre the reason I made it this far. Honestly, giving you this much doesnโt even feel like enough.โ
โNathan, I never asked for anything in return. I was just being a friendโฆโ
โEven brothers keep things clear when it comes to money. Friends should be the same.โ Nathan let out a soft chuckle. โThis is my call, Victoria. Honestly, I always knew we werenโt built to last, but I never thought itโd end so soon. A lot of this is on me.โ
โNo, itโs me. I couldnโt stay true to us,โ I said quietly.
Nathan looked at me and gently shook his head. โBack then, I owed the Chancellor family a huge favor. It was like a fire burning inside me, always making me anxious. Now that debtโs shifted to you, and somehow, I feel a lot calmer.โ
I couldnโt hide my surprise as I looked at him.
Nathan spoke in a low voice, โIs Ryan treating you well?โ
I nodded. โYeah, he is.โ
โMr. Holcomb talked to me about the Jennings family. Victoria, I just think their world is really out of reachโitโs not easy to get in. Even Mr. Holcomb doesnโt really think you and Ryan will work out.โ Nathan worrying about me and Ryan totally caught me off guard; it was a little awkward.
But what made it even weirder was the fact that he was discussing me and Ryan with Jared in the first place. Seriously, donโt they have anything better to do?
โWhen did you and Jared even start talking about this?โ I asked, fixing my eyes on him.
