Chapter 460

I turned to look at him. There was no anger in his eyes anymore, and even the hurt seemed to have faded a little.

โ€œReally?โ€ If he was willing to talk things through, maybe we could actually end things peacefully, both of us moving on.

Nathan nodded. โ€œYeah. Just say whateverโ€™s on your mind. Iโ€™m here.โ€

I stared at him, momentarily stunned. There was a strange, almost crazy calmness about him right now.

โ€œWhat Iโ€™m saying is, you should put your energy into building your company. Once your business really takes off, maybe youโ€™ll meet someone truly special.โ€ I sat back down, sipping my water as I spoke.

โ€œYou really think Iโ€™ll meet someone else?โ€ Nathan asked, taking a sip of his wine, his eyes locked on me.

I nodded. โ€œOf course. Love flows, like water. It never stays the same. Right now, Iโ€™m the one you care about, but your life is long. Who knows who youโ€™ll meet down the road? Maybe one day youโ€™ll find someone even more interesting, someone whose soul really matches yours.โ€

โ€œYeah, maybe.โ€ Nathan didnโ€™t seem to be taking my words to heart. He just quietly finished his wine and poured himself another half glass.

Iโ€™d tried everything to get him to look forward, to be excited about what the future might bring, but why did he look so uninterested?

Maybe everything I said was just pointless.

โ€œNathan, weโ€™ll still be friendsโ€”and business partners. I really hope you can take your company even further. And honestly, Iโ€™ve got my own selfish reasonsโ€”I want to invest, so Iโ€™ll be a shareholder. If you make money, I get a cut too.โ€ I smiled.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll make sure you donโ€™t lose money.โ€ Nathan nodded. โ€œYouโ€™ll come to the shareholder meetings, right?โ€

I nodded. โ€œOf course. Iโ€™ll be keeping a close watch on everything going on at your company.โ€

Nathan chuckled. โ€œMaybe you should invest a bit moreโ€”then youโ€™ll be even more interested in what Iโ€™m up to.โ€

โ€œWhere would I get that kind of money?โ€ I let out a bitter laugh.

Nathan looked at me steadily. โ€œIโ€™ll give you five percent of my shares.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I stared at him in disbelief. โ€œI donโ€™t need that.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my decision.โ€ Nathan looked down at his wine glass. โ€œWithout you, I wouldnโ€™t be where I am now. Youโ€™re the reason I made it this far. Honestly, giving you this much doesnโ€™t even feel like enough.โ€

โ€œNathan, I never asked for anything in return. I was just being a friendโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEven brothers keep things clear when it comes to money. Friends should be the same.โ€ Nathan let out a soft chuckle. โ€œThis is my call, Victoria. Honestly, I always knew we werenโ€™t built to last, but I never thought itโ€™d end so soon. A lot of this is on me.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s me. I couldnโ€™t stay true to us,โ€ I said quietly.

Nathan looked at me and gently shook his head. โ€œBack then, I owed the Chancellor family a huge favor. It was like a fire burning inside me, always making me anxious. Now that debtโ€™s shifted to you, and somehow, I feel a lot calmer.โ€

I couldnโ€™t hide my surprise as I looked at him.

Nathan spoke in a low voice, โ€œIs Ryan treating you well?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, he is.โ€

โ€œMr. Holcomb talked to me about the Jennings family. Victoria, I just think their world is really out of reachโ€”itโ€™s not easy to get in. Even Mr. Holcomb doesnโ€™t really think you and Ryan will work out.โ€ Nathan worrying about me and Ryan totally caught me off guard; it was a little awkward.

But what made it even weirder was the fact that he was discussing me and Ryan with Jared in the first place. Seriously, donโ€™t they have anything better to do?

โ€œWhen did you and Jared even start talking about this?โ€ I asked, fixing my eyes on him.
