Chapter 474
I had no clue what Ryan had been through since he got back to Braylin. He suddenly landed a job, so it mustโve been the Jennings family pulling strings.
He was about to start living the life the Jennings family had mapped out for him.
โI..โ Vic hesitated, unsure what to say.
โVic, I might not be able to come back to Shaville,โ Ryan said, his voice soft.
โWhen he said โmight not,โ what he really meant was he couldnโt come back at all,โ Vic thought.
โAfter everything the Jennings family has done for me, I really have to think about things from Ryanโs perspective now,โ Vic reflected.
โHe helped Nathan get through that crisis, so I should keep my word and actually try to be with him,โ Vic admitted to herself.
โOkay, Iโll take care of things on my end and get back to you,โ I said after a moment of thought, making my decision.
Ryan sounded really happy, his voice lighting up. โAlright, Iโll wait for you.โ
โYeah, Iโll try to hurry, but I might need a little time,โ I replied gently.
โNo worries, just take care of your stuff. Iโm working hard over here too,โ Ryan chuckled.
I hung up and turned aroundโJared was suddenly right behind me.
No idea if heโd overheard my call, but his face was dark as a thundercloud. โCongrats. Looks like you own more of the company than I do now.โ
I grinned. โAw, Mr. Ex, you donโt look too happy about that.โ
Jared narrowed his eyes. โI used to think you had no ambition. Turns out, youโve got plenty.โ
โThatโs just because youโre not strong enough. When you canโt handle a woman, you call her ambitious. Face it, Mr. Exโif youโre not good enough, just level up.โ
With that, I started to walk away, but after a few steps, I felt like I still had something to say. So I stopped and turned back.
Jaredโs face went even stiffer after my pointed remarks.
โMr. Holcomb, Iโd like to hand in my resignation,โ I said, meeting his eyes. โHope youโll sign off on it.โ
Jaredโs already grim face went even paler, panic flashing across his features.
โIs this because of what I said last night?โ Jared asked, clearly hurting. โIโm sorry, I was out of line.โ
I paused for a moment, then shook my head. โNo, itโs not that. Iโve just got other things lined up. What you did last night was out of line, but at least you didnโt go too far.โ
โWhat things? Where are you going?โ Jared pressed, his voice tense and his face looking kind of rattled.
โIโm going to Braylin,โ I said, meeting his eyes.
Jared visibly flinched, just staring at me.
I took a deep breath, refusing to look at that wounded expression of his, and blurted out an excuse. โActually, my brotherโs in Braylin too. Heโs got about a year left before he graduates, and heโs thinking about staying there.โ
Jared gave a cold, sarcastic laugh. โIs it really about your brother, or is it because of Ryan? You know the real reason.โ
I went silent.
Jared sneered, โSo in the end, youโre still heading to Braylin.โ
โYou already knew?โ I looked at him in surprise.
Jared looked like someone whoโd just lost a fight, his face full of defeat, โEver since you got together with Ryan, I knew youโd end up there.โ
โOnce I get settled, I can bring Yvonne over for holidays,โ I said, not wanting to explain any further.
โDonโt quit. Iโm planning to buy a property in Braylin and open a hotel too. You can take full charge, alright?โ Jared suddenly stepped closer, his voice low. โThis time, everythingโfrom picking the location to running the placeโis yours. Iโll just put up the money, and youโd still get half the profits?"
I was completely taken aback. โIs Jared out of his mind?โ I thought.
โIf thatโs still not enough, fine. You can have all the profits. If thereโs a loss, Iโll eat it,โ Jared said, biting his lip, giving in even more.
โJared, donโtโฆ donโt do this,โ I said, feeling uneasy about taking so much from him.
โWhat is it? Does taking my money make you uncomfortable?โ Jared asked, his tone not mocking, just quietly resigned.
