Chapter 527
I stared at him, surprised. He was lying right next to me, and the room still had that post-sex vibe. I was about to get up and take a shower when Ryanโs strong arm wrapped around me from behind, pulling me back into bed and into his embrace. โTake me with you, okay?โ he asked.
I tapped my finger between his eyebrows. โNew Yearโs is a big deal, a fresh start. Donโt you want to have dinner with your family?โ
Ryan buried his face in my neck, his voice husky. โMy mom said weโd have dinner together, but I donโt want to. I donโt want to hear her lecture me. I just want to be with you.โ
โNo, you need to be with your family,โ I insisted.
โBeing with you is when I feel most relaxed, happiest, and honestly, most like myself,โ Ryan gave me a puppy-eyed look. โYou never even scold me, Vic. Youโre so gentle. I really love that about you.โ
I froze for a second. Itโs not that Iโm overly gentleโitโs just that getting mad makes you age faster, and Iโm just trying to fight off aging here.
โRyan, quit acting like a kid,โ I said, trying to peel his arm off my waist.
But he just squeezed me even tighter, like he wanted us to become one person.
โVic, your gentleness is nothing like anyone elseโs. Sure, some people pretend to be sweet, but youโre realโlike water, soothing and embracing everything around you,โ Ryan breathed against my neck, his warm breath sending a shiver down my spine.
โMaybe Iโm faking it too, just with better acting skills,โ I teased.
โIโm not dumb, you know. Actually, Iโm smarter than most peopleโI see through a lot. So donโt even think about putting on a mask around me,โ Ryan said, lifting his head. His eyes, once hazy, now clear and deep, reminded me of Edwardโsโlike the bottomless depths of a lake, so dark and mysterious it sent a jolt through me.
Ryan gave me a half-smile. โVic, you probably donโt realize it, but Iโm way more patient and forgiving with you than with anyone else.โ
I paused, realizing maybe I shouldnโt treat him like a kid just because heโs a few years younger than me.
In a powerful family like the Jennings, any child who isnโt smart enough never makes it past childhoodโthey end up dying young in all sorts of โaccidents.โ
Ryan blinked at me, giving me that puppy-eyed, harmless grin. โWhy so nervous? Are you shaking?โ
I instantly got annoyed and struggled to break free. โYouโre being ridiculous. Let goโI need to take a shower.โ
โVic, Iโm still not satisfiedโฆโ Ryanโs eyes were full of pleading. โCan we go one more round?โ
โNo way, Iโm totally wiped out,โ I said, shaking my head.
โI do!โ Ryan flipped over with a commanding presence, bracing his strong arms on either side of me as he gazed down. โWhat am I supposed to do? I just canโt ever get enough of youโฆโ
I shoved at him. โAre you trying to wear me out or what?โ
Ryan lowered his head to my ear, letting out a soft laugh. โThis time, Iโll be gentle.โ
Unable to resist his relentless coaxing, I gave in once more, half protesting, half yielding. Ryan was like a tireless predatorโyoung, wild, and insatiable.
We spent a few days going back and forth about whether to bring Ryan to Hachester. In the end, it didnโt really matterโif we left him behind, heโd just keep clinging to us anyway.
With New Yearโs coming up, I looked at Ryan seriously. โSo, if youโre heading to Hachester, what reason are you going to give? Are you finally going to talk to your grandpa about us?โ
โIโm not ready for that conversation yet,โ Ryan mumbled, dropping his head. โIโll figure something out. Donโt worry, I wonโt drag you into any mess.โ
I nodded. โAlright, then handle it yourself. Text me when you get to Hachester.โ
โCanโt we go together?โ Ryan asked softly.
