Chapter 527

I stared at him, surprised. He was lying right next to me, and the room still had that post-sex vibe. I was about to get up and take a shower when Ryanโ€™s strong arm wrapped around me from behind, pulling me back into bed and into his embrace. โ€œTake me with you, okay?โ€ he asked.

I tapped my finger between his eyebrows. โ€œNew Yearโ€™s is a big deal, a fresh start. Donโ€™t you want to have dinner with your family?โ€

Ryan buried his face in my neck, his voice husky. โ€œMy mom said weโ€™d have dinner together, but I donโ€™t want to. I donโ€™t want to hear her lecture me. I just want to be with you.โ€

โ€œNo, you need to be with your family,โ€ I insisted.

โ€œBeing with you is when I feel most relaxed, happiest, and honestly, most like myself,โ€ Ryan gave me a puppy-eyed look. โ€œYou never even scold me, Vic. Youโ€™re so gentle. I really love that about you.โ€

I froze for a second. Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m overly gentleโ€“itโ€™s just that getting mad makes you age faster, and Iโ€™m just trying to fight off aging here.

โ€œRyan, quit acting like a kid,โ€ I said, trying to peel his arm off my waist.

But he just squeezed me even tighter, like he wanted us to become one person.

โ€œVic, your gentleness is nothing like anyone elseโ€™s. Sure, some people pretend to be sweet, but youโ€™re realโ€“like water, soothing and embracing everything around you,โ€ Ryan breathed against my neck, his warm breath sending a shiver down my spine.

โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m faking it too, just with better acting skills,โ€ I teased.

โ€œIโ€™m not dumb, you know. Actually, Iโ€™m smarter than most peopleโ€“I see through a lot. So donโ€™t even think about putting on a mask around me,โ€ Ryan said, lifting his head. His eyes, once hazy, now clear and deep, reminded me of Edwardโ€™sโ€“like the bottomless depths of a lake, so dark and mysterious it sent a jolt through me.

Ryan gave me a half-smile. โ€œVic, you probably donโ€™t realize it, but Iโ€™m way more patient and forgiving with you than with anyone else.โ€

I paused, realizing maybe I shouldnโ€™t treat him like a kid just because heโ€™s a few years younger than me.

In a powerful family like the Jennings, any child who isnโ€™t smart enough never makes it past childhoodโ€“they end up dying young in all sorts of โ€˜accidents.โ€™

Ryan blinked at me, giving me that puppy-eyed, harmless grin. โ€œWhy so nervous? Are you shaking?โ€

I instantly got annoyed and struggled to break free. โ€œYouโ€™re being ridiculous. Let goโ€“I need to take a shower.โ€

โ€œVic, Iโ€™m still not satisfiedโ€ฆโ€ Ryanโ€™s eyes were full of pleading. โ€œCan we go one more round?โ€

โ€œNo way, Iโ€™m totally wiped out,โ€ I said, shaking my head.

โ€œI do!โ€ Ryan flipped over with a commanding presence, bracing his strong arms on either side of me as he gazed down. โ€œWhat am I supposed to do? I just canโ€™t ever get enough of youโ€ฆโ€

I shoved at him. โ€œAre you trying to wear me out or what?โ€

Ryan lowered his head to my ear, letting out a soft laugh. โ€œThis time, Iโ€™ll be gentle.โ€

Unable to resist his relentless coaxing, I gave in once more, half protesting, half yielding. Ryan was like a tireless predatorโ€“young, wild, and insatiable.

We spent a few days going back and forth about whether to bring Ryan to Hachester. In the end, it didnโ€™t really matterโ€“if we left him behind, heโ€™d just keep clinging to us anyway.

With New Yearโ€™s coming up, I looked at Ryan seriously. โ€œSo, if youโ€™re heading to Hachester, what reason are you going to give? Are you finally going to talk to your grandpa about us?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not ready for that conversation yet,โ€ Ryan mumbled, dropping his head. โ€œIโ€™ll figure something out. Donโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t drag you into any mess.โ€

I nodded. โ€œAlright, then handle it yourself. Text me when you get to Hachester.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t we go together?โ€ Ryan asked softly.
