Chapter 528

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m going back with my colleagues from work,โ€ I replied.

Ryan put on a wounded look. โ€œVic, you really are gentleโ€“at least you were. But now youโ€™re just ruthless, shutting me down so fast, not even a little pity for me.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh at his theatrics and pinched his cheek. โ€œDoes that make you feel better?โ€

Ryan blinked, his smile curving up. โ€œStill not enough.โ€

I gave him a quick kiss, and Ryan looked totally content. โ€œNow youโ€™re really getting it.โ€

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ve got to head to work. You can let yourself out,โ€ I said, heading to put on my shoes.

Ryan, wrapped in a towel and looking all smug, leaned against the bedroom door. โ€œOh, by the way, letโ€™s grab dinner tonight.โ€

โ€œI might have to work late tonight,โ€ I said.

โ€œUncle Ryanโ€™s got himself a girlfriend, and I want you to come have dinner with the two of them,โ€ Ryan said lazily.

My heart skipped a beat. โ€˜Edward really found himself a girlfriend?โ€™

โ€œI think Iโ€™ll pass. I donโ€™t really know your uncle that well,โ€ I said, turning him down without hesitation.

I really donโ€™t want to get involved in anything related to Edward.

โ€œJust do it for me, okay? Uncle Ryan already knows about us, and his girlfriend is a top-tier dancerโ€“sheโ€™s just as gorgeous as you,โ€ Ryan said, raising an eyebrow. โ€œSeriously, you donโ€™t even want to see her?โ€

โ€œNo thanks,โ€ I said, shaking my head. โ€œYou go have dinner with them.โ€

โ€œVic, you care way too much about work,โ€ Ryan complained, sounding all pitiful. โ€œEver heard of work-life balance?โ€

Sure, I take my job seriously, but that doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ve been skipping my workouts. Iโ€™ve still been working out regularly.

Honestly, dating a younger guy is way more refreshing than any fitness routine.

Ever since I got together with Ryan, my gym trips have seriously dropped off.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I know how to take care of myself,โ€ I said with a smile as I opened the door, waved goodbye, and headed to the office.

Later that day, Ryan called again, just to make sure I really wasnโ€™t coming.

I sent him a work selfie and let him know I had a meeting tonight.

Last time, Edward said he was going to get a girlfriend, but it was all fakeโ€“just someone playing along with his act, basically a pawn in his scheme.

You can only believe half of what a man says.

She was just a pawn, and pawns are there to be used.

Edward says itโ€™s all just for show, but what if he actually means it?

โ€˜Heh, ever since I got burned by that guy before, Iโ€™ve become a lot more clear-eyed about love between men and women.โ€™

That night, Ryan didnโ€™t come over. He said heโ€™d had too much to drink, so I just checked in on him with a couple of caring texts.

I was just doing my skincare routine when my phone buzzed with a text.

I glanced at itโ€“it was a new number, sending a request to connect.

Thinking it was probably work-related, I went ahead and added them.

But to my surprise, the very first message popped up: โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you come over tonight?โ€ I blinked, caught off guard.

That toneโ€ฆ Only one person texts me like that.

It could only be Edward, no doubt about it.

I just replied, โ€œIโ€™m busy.โ€

No need to explain or defend myselfโ€”just keeping it short and factual, hoping heโ€™ll drop it.

โ€œAre you avoiding me again?โ€ Edwardโ€™s text came through, sounding pretty annoyed.

โ€œNo, I really am busy,โ€ I replied, keeping my cool.

Edward went quiet after that. Looks like my cold shoulder worked.

A few minutes later, another message popped up: [Victoriaโ€ฆ I havenโ€™t been able to sleep at all lately. Itโ€™s like something wild is eating me up inside.]

I felt a chill run down my spine as I read it.

Then another message came through: [Just tell meโ€“what am I supposed to do?]

My mind went blank for a second, and then I replied: [Sounds like youโ€™ve been celibate for way too long. Go hook up with someone.]
