Chapter 553

I rolled down the car window, letting the cold wind rush in, clearing my head.

Edwardโ€™s voice, laced with danger, drifted over. I turned to look at him.

Our eyes metโ€”his gaze was deep and impossible to read.

The wind whipped my hair around, the cold biting through me, and I quickly rolled the window back up.

โ€œAre you that scared?โ€ Edward asked, his voice softening as he noticed the panic on my face.

โ€œBetween the Chamberlains and the Jennings, who holds more power?โ€ I asked, my mind clearing.

Edward chuckled softly, looking at me with amusement. โ€œWorried I canโ€™t keep you safe?โ€

I didnโ€™t try to act tough. I nodded. โ€œIโ€™m just seeing Ryan. The Chamberlains have no reason to come after me.โ€

Edward looked out the window, his voice low. โ€œFairness is only for a select few. You donโ€™t actually believe it applies to you, do you?โ€

My heart clenched painfully. I really was too naive after all.

โ€œWas the engagement between Ryan and Miss Chamberlain set up before I showed up, or did this just come up recently?โ€ I asked, my nerves getting the better of me.

Edward didnโ€™t hide anything. โ€œThey never brought it up beforeโ€“just talked about it a few days ago. But Fionaโ€™s always had a crush on Ryan. Sheโ€™s hinted at it more than once.โ€

Hearing that, I felt a weight lift off my chest. As long as Ryan didnโ€™t know, I couldnโ€™t really blame him.

If he knew about the engagement and still came after me, then itโ€™d be on him.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. The Chamberlains arenโ€™t as strong as the Jennings, but theyโ€™ve got a new up-and-comer whoโ€™s starting to make waves. The Jennings family needs to back someone fresh, and Ryanโ€™s the one theyโ€™re putting their money on,โ€ Edward said, breaking it down for me.

I blinked, thinking, โ€˜So Ryanโ€™s really headed down a pretty unusual path.โ€™

โ€œSo, what kind of person do you think Ryan is?โ€ Edward asked, his voice cutting through my silence.

Scenes from my time with Ryan flashed in my mind. Heโ€™s got layersโ€“sometimes heโ€™s so pure and naive, his eyes clear as day, and other times, heโ€™s all scheming and deep, like a whole galaxy hidden inside.

โ€œHeโ€™s pretty easy to get along with,โ€ I replied.

โ€œThatโ€™s just because he likes you,โ€ Edward snorted. โ€œHeโ€™s not like that with other girls.โ€

I was taken aback, remembering his birthday when Isabelle went after meโ€”Ryan suddenly snapped, and Isabelle was so upset she burst into tears. Later, she even came over to apologize to me.

โ€œDoes he actually like Miss Chamberlain?โ€ I asked, a little confused.

Edward shook his head. โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œYou really think so?โ€ My eyes brightened.

Edward caught the look on my face and shut down my rising hope. โ€œNot liking her doesnโ€™t mean they wonโ€™t end up married.โ€

I lowered my head in defeat, my voice heavy with disappointment. โ€œI never expected thereโ€™d be a future for us.โ€

โ€œYeah, right,โ€ Edward sneered.

I gave him a look that said โ€˜believe it or not, I donโ€™t care,โ€™ tucking my hair behind my ear as my thoughts grew even more tangled.

The car fell silent. Edward seemed lost in thought, his mood sour, lips pressed into a thin line.

I was wondering if maybe it was time to leave Braylin and start over somewhere new.

I wasnโ€™t trying to run awayโ€“I just wanted to escape all the mess and finally have some peace.

Now that I actually had some money, I had choices for once.

I could quit my job, go on vacation, work on my inner peaceโ€“maybe even try meditationโ€“or just do nothing at all and be there for my parents as they got older.

Thinking about all this, I really started to consider just walking away from it all.

โ€œWhat are you thinking about?โ€ Edward suddenly asked.

He mustโ€™ve been watching me zone out for a while before he finally spoke up.

I shook my head. โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œStill thinking about how you and Ryan could start over?โ€ Edward asked, his tone softly mocking.

I knew he was just trying to provoke me, so I didnโ€™t take the bait. โ€œIโ€™m not that desperate for a guy. Iโ€™m not about to walk straight into trouble just because I know itโ€™s there.โ€
