Chapter 554

Edwardโ€™s eyes flashed with something unreadable, and he nodded. โ€œLooks like youโ€™ve got your priorities straight. For a second, I thought youโ€™d go down in flames for love.โ€

โ€œNo way. Thereโ€™s no man in this world worth risking my life and everything for,โ€ I replied with conviction.

Edwardโ€™s expression stiffened, and then he went quiet.

After a long pause, he suddenly said, โ€œVictoria, if you ever run into trouble, just ask me for help.โ€

I stared at him for a moment. โ€œIf I really do, are you going to want something from me?โ€

Edward fixed me with a steady, unreadable stare. โ€œDo you really think the only reason Iโ€™d help you is to get you into bed?โ€

His words were so blunt, I was left speechless.

โ€˜Isnโ€™t that exactly what you want?โ€™ I couldnโ€™t help but think.

Edward let out a soft laugh, as if he realized he was stating the obvious.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to, I wonโ€™t force you,โ€ he added quietly.

In the grownโ€“up world, nothing comes for freeโ€“every favor has its price. Of course I understood that.

โ€œIโ€™m thinking about leaving Braylin,โ€ I said, hoping heโ€™d have something to say about it.

โ€œHeading back to Shaville?โ€ Edwardโ€™s eyes brightened for a moment.

โ€œNo, I want to go home and spend time with my parents,โ€ I replied, dropping my gaze.

Edwardโ€™s face went stiff for a moment before he said, โ€œI donโ€™t think you should go back. Your parents work for the government, and the Chamberlains have plenty of ways to get to them.โ€

That was exactly what I was afraid of.

โ€œBut if you stay in Braylin and show youโ€™re really done with 2g, the Chamberlains might just let you go. Not everyone dares to stir up trouble in Braylin,โ€ Edward hinted.

I sucked in a cold breath. He was rightโ€“even if I went home, my broker would still be here in Braylin, unless he left too.

If my family got dragged into this because of me, Iโ€™d never forgive myself.

โ€œEdward, after hearing all that, it really feels like Iโ€™ve hit a dead end,โ€ I said, my voice lost and uncertain.

Edward replied coolly, โ€œYes. If you donโ€™t make your position clear soon, youโ€™re really in for a tough time.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t see Ryan again,โ€ I said, biting my lip, my heart twisting with the words.

โ€œJust because you stay away doesnโ€™t mean he wonโ€™t come looking for you,โ€ Edward raised an eyebrow. โ€œYou can keep yourself in check, but you canโ€™t control what he does.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to him and set things straight,โ€ I said, feeling helpless and drained.

โ€œVictoria, I tried to stop you two before, but you still went ahead and got together,โ€ Edward said, throwing a bit of shade.

My cheeks burned with embarrassment. Yeah, he really did warn me way back, but I was too stubborn to listen.

Edwardโ€™s face clouded over. โ€œI figured from the startโ€“Ryan was never going to stick around for the long haul.โ€

No point talking about it now. I slumped back in my seat and shut my eyes.

The car stopped at the entrance to my neighborhood, and I pushed the door open, stepping out right away.

The moment I got out, the boneโ€“chilling cold hit me, and I shivered.

Just then, a pair of big hands gently draped my coat over my shoulders. I quickly slipped my arms in and was about to button it up.

But before I could, Edward stepped in front of me. His strong, wellโ€“defined fingers fastened the buttons for me, one by one.

Then he placed the bag from his arm into my hand. โ€œGo home and get some rest. Stop overthinkingโ€“The Chamberlains canโ€™t really touch you.โ€

His steady presence, in the deep cold and darkness of the night, brought a rare sense of peace to my anxious heart.

โ€œThank you, Mr. Jennings,โ€ I said. Even though weโ€™d clashed so many times before, I genuinely felt grateful to him now. When I was helpless, he didnโ€™t shove me into the abyssโ€“instead, he pulled me back from the edge.

โ€œMm.โ€ Edward just nodded, accepting my thanks.

I walked a few steps, then paused and looked back at him. โ€œIโ€™ve given you a pretty hard time before. How come youโ€™re not using this chance to get even with me?โ€
