Chapter 559
Edwardโs gentle look vanished in a flash. Maybe this was a sore spot for him too.
But since Iโd brought it up, there was no way for him to dodge it now.
I took a deep breath and couldnโt help but mock, โRyan is your nephew. He respects you, looks up to you, but you want to take the woman he used to care about for yourself. Heโs bound to lose it. Arenโt you worried heโll end up hating you?โ
Edwardโs expression grew more serious. He stayed silent, just listening to me.
โEdward, what weโre doingโฆ itโs just not right,โ I said quietly. โWe canโt just pretend the rules donโt apply to us.โ
A flicker of pain crossed Edwardโs face, but he quickly hid it.
โRyan knows what the Chamberlain family is really like, even better than I do. If he truly loves you, he should realize that without someone powerful to rely on, things wonโt go well for you,โ Edward replied after thinking it over.
I widened my eyes. โYouโve talked to Ryan about me?โ
Edward said calmly, โNo. Ryanโs pretty unstable right now. My dad and I are both worried he might do something stupid, so weโre careful not to set him off.โ
โHe might do something stupid?โ My heart sank.
Edward caught the worry on my face, and his own expression soured. He let out a quiet scoff. โJennings kids arenโt that weak. Relax, heโs not going to do anything drastic.โ
But I still couldnโt shake off my worry. I knew Ryan was the type to fight backโgiving in and accepting things would crush him. He must be struggling inside right now. I couldnโt help but wonder if he was trying to find a way to break out of the cage heโs trapped in, to defy the rules holding him down.
But this is reality, and in the end, fate always calls the shots.
โWe all have to face it,โ I whispered painfully.
Edward frowned at me, trying to reassure me. โDonโt worry. Ryan will put the bigger picture first, as long as you stay away and donโt stir up his feelings anymore.โ
โItโs not like I can just see him whenever I want. Like you said before, if Ryan hadnโt fallen for me, our lives never wouldโve even crossed. I believe that now.โ I slumped over the table, my eyes burning with unshed tears, trying to comfort myself, telling myself to accept itโbecause fighting it would only bring more pain.
โIf you really want to see Ryan, I can make it happen,โ Edward offered, surprisingly softening for onceโmaybe because my tears had finally gotten to him.
โNo, I donโt want to see him. Thereโs no point,โ I said, shaking my head as the tears fell even harder.
โReally? You wonโt regret it?โ Edward asked, his tone icy.
โStop messing with me. What would seeing him even do? Should I just sleep with him right in front of you?โ I shot back recklessly, my words laced with bitter sarcasm.
Edwardโs face turned even darker. He looked away, his voice cold. โDonโt even think about it.โ
I knew it deep down, Edward was a controlling, domineering man.
Honestly, I was scared. If I really got involved with a guy like him, would I ever have the freedom to be with anyone else?
Heโd block every way for me to meet other men. Iโd be his and his alone.
Just thinking about it made me shudder. No way. I couldnโt let myself fall into his trap.
โIโm finished. Mr. Jennings, would you mind seeing me out?โ I changed the subject.
Edward took a sip of his tea and stood up. โLetโs go.โ
I got into his car, and the driver pulled away. Once we hit the main road, I quickly said, โJust let me off by the curb. Iโll get a cab myselfโฆโ
โVictoria, use me and then kick me to the curbโis that how you treat people?โ Edward said, clearly annoyed.
I felt a little awkward. Since he was actually trying to take me home, I really shouldnโt have hurt his feelings.
โThanks,โ I said, genuinely grateful.
But Edwardโs expression didnโt soften. He stared out the window, lost in thought.
Halfway through the drive, my phone started ringing.
I glanced at the caller ID and my heart skipped a beat. โItโs Ms. Lynn,โ I blurted out.
Edward just shot me a casual glance. โGo ahead, answer it.โ
โIsabelle Lynn,โ I clarified, just in case he didnโt realize who I meant.
Edward didnโt hold back with the sarcasm. โSeriously? Look at you getting all flustered. Thereโs nothing going on between us, so what are you so nervous about?โ
His words got under my skin, and I immediately put the call on speaker. โMs. Lynn, is there something you need?โ
