Chapter 559

Edwardโ€™s gentle look vanished in a flash. Maybe this was a sore spot for him too.

But since Iโ€™d brought it up, there was no way for him to dodge it now.

I took a deep breath and couldnโ€™t help but mock, โ€œRyan is your nephew. He respects you, looks up to you, but you want to take the woman he used to care about for yourself. Heโ€™s bound to lose it. Arenโ€™t you worried heโ€™ll end up hating you?โ€

Edwardโ€™s expression grew more serious. He stayed silent, just listening to me.

โ€œEdward, what weโ€™re doingโ€ฆ itโ€™s just not right,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œWe canโ€™t just pretend the rules donโ€™t apply to us.โ€

A flicker of pain crossed Edwardโ€™s face, but he quickly hid it.

โ€œRyan knows what the Chamberlain family is really like, even better than I do. If he truly loves you, he should realize that without someone powerful to rely on, things wonโ€™t go well for you,โ€ Edward replied after thinking it over.

I widened my eyes. โ€œYouโ€™ve talked to Ryan about me?โ€

Edward said calmly, โ€œNo. Ryanโ€™s pretty unstable right now. My dad and I are both worried he might do something stupid, so weโ€™re careful not to set him off.โ€

โ€œHe might do something stupid?โ€ My heart sank.

Edward caught the worry on my face, and his own expression soured. He let out a quiet scoff. โ€œJennings kids arenโ€™t that weak. Relax, heโ€™s not going to do anything drastic.โ€

But I still couldnโ€™t shake off my worry. I knew Ryan was the type to fight backโ€”giving in and accepting things would crush him. He must be struggling inside right now. I couldnโ€™t help but wonder if he was trying to find a way to break out of the cage heโ€™s trapped in, to defy the rules holding him down.

But this is reality, and in the end, fate always calls the shots.

โ€œWe all have to face it,โ€ I whispered painfully.

Edward frowned at me, trying to reassure me. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Ryan will put the bigger picture first, as long as you stay away and donโ€™t stir up his feelings anymore.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like I can just see him whenever I want. Like you said before, if Ryan hadnโ€™t fallen for me, our lives never wouldโ€™ve even crossed. I believe that now.โ€ I slumped over the table, my eyes burning with unshed tears, trying to comfort myself, telling myself to accept itโ€”because fighting it would only bring more pain.

โ€œIf you really want to see Ryan, I can make it happen,โ€ Edward offered, surprisingly softening for onceโ€“maybe because my tears had finally gotten to him.

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t want to see him. Thereโ€™s no point,โ€ I said, shaking my head as the tears fell even harder.

โ€œReally? You wonโ€™t regret it?โ€ Edward asked, his tone icy.

โ€œStop messing with me. What would seeing him even do? Should I just sleep with him right in front of you?โ€ I shot back recklessly, my words laced with bitter sarcasm.

Edwardโ€™s face turned even darker. He looked away, his voice cold. โ€œDonโ€™t even think about it.โ€

I knew it deep down, Edward was a controlling, domineering man.

Honestly, I was scared. If I really got involved with a guy like him, would I ever have the freedom to be with anyone else?

Heโ€™d block every way for me to meet other men. Iโ€™d be his and his alone.

Just thinking about it made me shudder. No way. I couldnโ€™t let myself fall into his trap.

โ€œIโ€™m finished. Mr. Jennings, would you mind seeing me out?โ€ I changed the subject.

Edward took a sip of his tea and stood up. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

I got into his car, and the driver pulled away. Once we hit the main road, I quickly said, โ€œJust let me off by the curb. Iโ€™ll get a cab myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œVictoria, use me and then kick me to the curbโ€“is that how you treat people?โ€ Edward said, clearly annoyed.

I felt a little awkward. Since he was actually trying to take me home, I really shouldnโ€™t have hurt his feelings.

โ€œThanks,โ€ I said, genuinely grateful.

But Edwardโ€™s expression didnโ€™t soften. He stared out the window, lost in thought.

Halfway through the drive, my phone started ringing.

I glanced at the caller ID and my heart skipped a beat. โ€œItโ€™s Ms. Lynn,โ€ I blurted out.

Edward just shot me a casual glance. โ€œGo ahead, answer it.โ€

โ€œIsabelle Lynn,โ€ I clarified, just in case he didnโ€™t realize who I meant.

Edward didnโ€™t hold back with the sarcasm. โ€œSeriously? Look at you getting all flustered. Thereโ€™s nothing going on between us, so what are you so nervous about?โ€

His words got under my skin, and I immediately put the call on speaker. โ€œMs. Lynn, is there something you need?โ€
