Isabelleโs voice came through, full of concern. โVictoria, I heard about what happened with Ryan. Iโm sorry, but Fiona is my friend. About that night, I hope you wonโt blame me.โ
โI understand,โ I replied, my voice flat.
She couldโve found an excuse to say no that night, but she didnโt. It was simpleโFiona was her friend. I wasnโt.
โAre you mad at me? If Ryan finds out I was involved, he probably wonโt talk to me either. Now I feel like Iโm the bad guy no matter what I do,โ Isabelle said, sounding really hurt and frustrated.
Did she really want me to make her feel better right now?
โMs. Lynn, honestly, Iโm feeling pretty awful myself right now, so I donโt really have any comforting words for you,โ I said, my tone flat.
Edward gave me a look, like he was reading my mind.
Realizing I wasnโt some naive pushover, Isabelle let out an awkward laugh. โSorry, I didnโt mean for her words to sting, but thatโs just how reality is. Victoria, Iโm not saying youโre not good enough, but you have been divorced. And now Ryanโs about to step into politicsโhe needs connections, relationships, all that complicated stuff. Honestly, itโs way more than you could ever imagine, and you probably wouldnโt understand even if I explained. But hey, you and him had your time together, and thatโs already something most people can only dream of. You can hold onto those memories for the rest of your life.โ
I got the message loud and clearโhaving a past with Ryan was supposed to be some once-in-a-lifetime blessing I should be grateful for.
โI understand what you mean. It really puts things in perspective. Thanks,โ I replied, my tone cool.
Isabelle could tell I wasnโt exactly warm, so after a couple more words, she hung up.
Clutching my phone, I turned to stare out the window, burying my disappointment deep inside.
Edward waited for me to speak, and when I stayed silent, he asked, โAre you feeling down again?โ
โNo, everyone just wants me to see things for what they are. If I still canโt, then I really must be blind,โ I murmured with a soft sigh.
โYou really have no ambition, do you? Just because people want you to see reality, you have to see it that clearly? The world isnโt just black and whiteโmost of it is gray. If you were a little more ambitious, youโd already be asking if the Chamberlain brothers are single, seeing if you could snag a spot as Fionaโs sister-in-law,โ Edward joked, his words colder than ice.
I stared at him, completely stunned.
Edward laughed. โWhat? Did that get to you? Are you actually thinking about making a move like that?โ
โYeah, right,โ I shot him a glare. โIโm not that ambitious. I just want a normal life, not to end up dead on the street.โ
Edward couldnโt help but laugh, reaching over to twirl a strand of my hair around his slender fingers. โGentleness is the strongest force in the world, Victoria. Ryan once told me that being with you puts him at ease. Right nowโฆ I feel the same way.โ
I quickly snatched my hair back from his handโI didnโt want even a hint of intimacy between us.
โTell me about your ex-wife,โ I said, changing the subject to snap him out of it.
Sure enough, Edward sobered up instantly, dropping the joking tone. โThereโs nothing to talk about,โ he said flatly.
Seeing he really didnโt want to talk about it, I chuckled. โYou two have a kid together, so you must see each other a few times a year, right? With New Yearโs coming up, is she bringing your child back home for a family dinner with you?โ
Edward gave a wry smile. โAre you hoping to see me sharing New Yearโs dinner with her and her boyfriend?โ
I was caught off guard. That was definitely not what I expected.
โSheโs got herself a boyfriend now?โ I asked, half-gossiping.
โNora said sheโs been getting pretty cozy with some guy lately, so yeah, I guess she has,โ Edward replied.
โSoโฆ how does that make you feel?โ I pressed.
โDoesnโt faze me at all. Even if sheโs seeing five or ten guys, I wouldnโt care. Itโs her lifeโIโm not here to judge,โ Edward answered, his face totally unreadable. The calm in his eyes made it clear he really meant it.
โI think I understand now.โ If Yvonne told me right now that Jared was going to marry Tracy, I wouldnโt even be surprised. Itโs his decisionโhis life to live.
Once we got back to my buildingโs underground garage, I got out of the car.
Edward got out too, and then, in a low voice, he asked, โMind if I come up for some tea?โ
