Isabelleโ€™s voice came through, full of concern. โ€œVictoria, I heard about what happened with Ryan. Iโ€™m sorry, but Fiona is my friend. About that night, I hope you wonโ€™t blame me.โ€

โ€œI understand,โ€ I replied, my voice flat.

She couldโ€™ve found an excuse to say no that night, but she didnโ€™t. It was simpleโ€”Fiona was her friend. I wasnโ€™t.

โ€œAre you mad at me? If Ryan finds out I was involved, he probably wonโ€™t talk to me either. Now I feel like Iโ€™m the bad guy no matter what I do,โ€ Isabelle said, sounding really hurt and frustrated.

Did she really want me to make her feel better right now?

โ€œMs. Lynn, honestly, Iโ€™m feeling pretty awful myself right now, so I donโ€™t really have any comforting words for you,โ€ I said, my tone flat.

Edward gave me a look, like he was reading my mind.

Realizing I wasnโ€™t some naive pushover, Isabelle let out an awkward laugh. โ€œSorry, I didnโ€™t mean for her words to sting, but thatโ€™s just how reality is. Victoria, Iโ€™m not saying youโ€™re not good enough, but you have been divorced. And now Ryanโ€™s about to step into politicsโ€”he needs connections, relationships, all that complicated stuff. Honestly, itโ€™s way more than you could ever imagine, and you probably wouldnโ€™t understand even if I explained. But hey, you and him had your time together, and thatโ€™s already something most people can only dream of. You can hold onto those memories for the rest of your life.โ€

I got the message loud and clearโ€”having a past with Ryan was supposed to be some once-in-a-lifetime blessing I should be grateful for.

โ€œI understand what you mean. It really puts things in perspective. Thanks,โ€ I replied, my tone cool.

Isabelle could tell I wasnโ€™t exactly warm, so after a couple more words, she hung up.

Clutching my phone, I turned to stare out the window, burying my disappointment deep inside.

Edward waited for me to speak, and when I stayed silent, he asked, โ€œAre you feeling down again?โ€

โ€œNo, everyone just wants me to see things for what they are. If I still canโ€™t, then I really must be blind,โ€ I murmured with a soft sigh.

โ€œYou really have no ambition, do you? Just because people want you to see reality, you have to see it that clearly? The world isnโ€™t just black and whiteโ€”most of it is gray. If you were a little more ambitious, youโ€™d already be asking if the Chamberlain brothers are single, seeing if you could snag a spot as Fionaโ€™s sister-in-law,โ€ Edward joked, his words colder than ice.

I stared at him, completely stunned.

Edward laughed. โ€œWhat? Did that get to you? Are you actually thinking about making a move like that?โ€

โ€œYeah, right,โ€ I shot him a glare. โ€œIโ€™m not that ambitious. I just want a normal life, not to end up dead on the street.โ€

Edward couldnโ€™t help but laugh, reaching over to twirl a strand of my hair around his slender fingers. โ€œGentleness is the strongest force in the world, Victoria. Ryan once told me that being with you puts him at ease. Right nowโ€ฆ I feel the same way.โ€

I quickly snatched my hair back from his handโ€”I didnโ€™t want even a hint of intimacy between us.

โ€œTell me about your ex-wife,โ€ I said, changing the subject to snap him out of it.

Sure enough, Edward sobered up instantly, dropping the joking tone. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to talk about,โ€ he said flatly.

Seeing he really didnโ€™t want to talk about it, I chuckled. โ€œYou two have a kid together, so you must see each other a few times a year, right? With New Yearโ€™s coming up, is she bringing your child back home for a family dinner with you?โ€

Edward gave a wry smile. โ€œAre you hoping to see me sharing New Yearโ€™s dinner with her and her boyfriend?โ€

I was caught off guard. That was definitely not what I expected.

โ€œSheโ€™s got herself a boyfriend now?โ€ I asked, half-gossiping.

โ€œNora said sheโ€™s been getting pretty cozy with some guy lately, so yeah, I guess she has,โ€ Edward replied.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ how does that make you feel?โ€ I pressed.

โ€œDoesnโ€™t faze me at all. Even if sheโ€™s seeing five or ten guys, I wouldnโ€™t care. Itโ€™s her lifeโ€”Iโ€™m not here to judge,โ€ Edward answered, his face totally unreadable. The calm in his eyes made it clear he really meant it.

โ€œI think I understand now.โ€ If Yvonne told me right now that Jared was going to marry Tracy, I wouldnโ€™t even be surprised. Itโ€™s his decisionโ€”his life to live.

Once we got back to my buildingโ€™s underground garage, I got out of the car.

Edward got out too, and then, in a low voice, he asked, โ€œMind if I come up for some tea?โ€
