Chapter 562

โ€œYou silly girl, I swore Iโ€™d never let you lose,โ€ Aiden said, putting on that melodramatic, bittersweet look you only see in coming-of-age stories, as he reached out to stroke Sophiaโ€™s hair.

I cleared my throat.

The two lovebirds across from me immediately straightened up.

โ€œVictoria, Sophia and I are planning to save up for two years and then buy a house in Braylin,โ€ Aiden said, looking serious.

โ€œReal estate in Braylin is crazy expensive. Do you guys have a budget in mind?โ€ I asked.

Aiden scratched the back of his head, clearly not having done any real budgeting. He let out a nervous laugh. โ€œWeโ€™ll cross that bridge when we get to it. If we have to, weโ€™ll just get a loan. Weโ€™re young, Sophia and Iโ€”weโ€™ll make it work.โ€

Sophia immediately frowned. โ€œLoans are such a hassle. I donโ€™t want to take one.โ€

Aiden quickly tried to soothe her. โ€œOkay, babe, no loans. Iโ€™ll just work harder and try to get an even bigger bonus next year.โ€

Sophia finally smiled again, then gave me a shrewd glance. Come on, weโ€™re both womenโ€“I know exactly what that look means. Sheโ€™s obviously hoping Iโ€™ll lend her some cash, or maybe get my folks to help out with the down payment.

If sheโ€™s truly serious about building a life with Aiden, and I actually had the money, Iโ€™d totally support them. But if Sophiaโ€™s just scheming for my cash, then Iโ€™d have no problem smiling and breaking up the lovebirds myself. I donโ€™t expect my brother to marry into money, but Iโ€™ll be damned if he brings home a queen who turns our whole family into her personal staff.

โ€œVictoria, weโ€™re getting our break in two days, but Sophia doesnโ€™t get time offโ€”sheโ€™s on shift duty. When are you heading home? Are you going to Hachester or back to Mom and Dadโ€™s?โ€ Aiden asked.

โ€œI think Iโ€™ll go see Mom and Dad,โ€ I replied. Itโ€™s been a while, and I kind of miss them.

โ€œAlright then. Should we book our flights together?โ€ Aiden suggested.

I paused to think. โ€œLet me check with Yvonne first, see if she wants to come with me. If not, Iโ€™ll just go back by myself.โ€

โ€œAlright, just let me know,โ€ Aiden said.

While Aiden and I were chatting, Sophia had already almost finished off the wagyu beef and foie gras. The portions werenโ€™t that big to begin withโ€“Aiden pretty much let her have most of it, and I was too full to eat any more anyway.

After dinner, Sophia started nagging Aiden again about not having a car. On the surface, she was complaining to him, but honestly, it felt like she was hinting at me the whole time.

โ€˜What a scheming girl,โ€™ I thought to myself.

I just ignored her.

โ€œWant me to give you guys a lift home?โ€ I asked, standing next to my car.

Sophia gave my BMW a quick once-over, then turned to Aiden. โ€œWe already talked about this, remember?โ€

Aiden shot me a look. โ€œYou head home first, Victoria. Weโ€™re not going back tonight.โ€

I nodded, minded my own business, and drove off.

A sad love song was playing in the car, and with the holidays starting, there were way fewer cars on the road in Braylin. Every word of that song felt like a bead dropping into my heart, weighing it down with a dull, heavy sadness.

It had been a while since Iโ€™d talked to Ryan. This city of Braylin still held traces of usโ€“places where we used to laugh and have fun together. Now, itโ€™s just me, all alone.

I didnโ€™t head straight home. Instead, I just drove around aimlessly, wandering through the city for a while.

By the time I finally got home, it was already past eleven. My phone lit up with a group chat notification. Scrolling through my messages as I got out of the car.

Nathan dropped a message in the group chat: [Victoria, when do you guys get your break?]

I didnโ€™t reply right away. Jared beat me to it and dropped the official holiday notice in the chat.

Nathan jumped in right away: [Canโ€™t you give Victoria an early break? Thatโ€™s so unfair.]

I quickly sent a smiley: [Thanks for looking out for me, Nathan, but Iโ€™m goodโ€“no need for special treatment.]

Jared replied: [If I really gave her an early break, youโ€™d just start snarking that Iโ€™m up to something shady.]

Nathan threw in a playful jab: [Mr. Holcomb, are you really that petty? Come on, donโ€™t get so touchy over a little chat.]

Jared didnโ€™t bother replying and just asked me, โ€œHeading back to Hachester?โ€

I answered, โ€œJust going home.โ€

Jared followed up, โ€œAre you bringing Yvonne?โ€

โ€œWould you be alright with her coming with me?โ€ I asked. I donโ€™t have custody of Yvonne, so I wasnโ€™t going to ask for anything.

โ€œIf youโ€™re bringing her, mind if I join too?โ€ Jared asked, half-joking but with a hint of curiosity.

Before I could type a reply, Nathan popped up in the group chat: [Victoriaโ€™s hometown must be gorgeous. Iโ€™ve never been! If Mr. Holcombโ€™s going, can I hitch a ride too?]

Jared just dropped a string of speechless emojis, clearly at a loss for words.

Watching them chat so happily, I couldnโ€™t help but feel like a third wheel.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you all just go have fun together? Iโ€™ll stay out of it,โ€ I said, putting on my best serious face.

Nathan shot back: [Victoria, you know Iโ€™m not into guys, right?]

Jared sent an angry emoji: [Donโ€™t gross me out!]
