Chapter 561

Edwardโ€™s request made my heart race.

Without thinking, I blurted out, โ€œSorry, thatโ€™s not convenient.โ€

Edwardโ€™s eyes grew darker.

Guys like him probably never get turned down, I thought to myself.

Still, I really donโ€™t have any reason to invite him over to my place, I added silently.

โ€œHow about next time?โ€ Edward pressed on, not ready to give up.

I shook my head. โ€œMr. Jennings, letโ€™s keep some distance between us. Itโ€™s better for both of us.โ€

Edward seemed to have seen this coming. He gave a relaxed smile. โ€œAre you guarding yourself so closely because Ryan isnโ€™t married yet?โ€

โ€œEven if he does get married, there still wouldnโ€™t be anything between us,โ€ I replied, a heaviness settling in my chest. Honestly, now that things are over with Ryan, I can finally throw myself into work and really hone my skills, I thought.

Edwardโ€™s face grew somber. โ€œAlright, go on upstairs.โ€

โ€œThanks for bringing me back. Goodbye,โ€ I said politely, stepping into the elevator just as the doors opened.

I pressed the button, and before the doors closed, I looked up at Edward, unable to help myself.

He was staring right at me, our eyes meeting for a split second before the elevator doors slid shut between us.

All the strength Iโ€™d managed to hold onto during the ride just vanished. I slumped against the elevator wall, my mind spinning.

I hadnโ€™t told anyone about my breakup with Ryan. I just poured all my energy into work.

With the end of the year coming up, every company was getting ready to take time off for the holidays. I got the holiday break notice from HQ too.

My brotherโ€™s been on a roll at work latelyโ€“he scored two great projects and got a fat year-end bonus. He could barely sit still with it, like it was burning a hole in his pocket. First thing he did was buy me a necklace, then picked out gifts for our parents. That night, he was buzzing with excitement, saying he wanted to treat me to dinner and even told me to bring my boyfriend along.

I came by myself, and my brother looked absolutely smug, grinning from ear to ear. Sophia was practically glued to his side, all soft and affectionate.

โ€œHey, sisโ€ฆโ€ Aiden jumped up as soon as he saw me. โ€œWhereโ€™s your boyfriend?โ€

I set my bag down and smiled. โ€œHeโ€™s busy.โ€

Aiden knew Ryanโ€™s job kept him tied up most of the time, so he just laughed. โ€œNext time, make sure you bring him!โ€

Sophia gave me a sly look. โ€œVictoria, itโ€™s almost the holidays and your boyfriendโ€™s still working? Heโ€™s so handsomeโ€“you better keep a close eye on him.โ€

Aiden shot her a look. โ€œShow some respect.โ€

Sophia pouted, then, with a little huff, sashayed back to her seat.

โ€œVictoria, go ahead and order whatever you want,โ€ Aiden said, grinning from ear to ear.

I nodded, grabbed the menu, and just picked a few simple dishesโ€“nothing fancy or expensive.

Sophia glanced over the menu, looking a bit dissatisfied. โ€œIโ€™m bored of these home-style dishes. We eat them at the office cafeteria every day, Aiden. I want thisโ€ฆ wagyu beef, and some foie gras too.โ€

โ€œAlright, alright. I know youโ€™ve been working hard lately, must be exhausted. If you want it, just order it,โ€ Aiden replied, spoiling her as usual. Heโ€™d always spent most of his money on her, and during college, he took her to see all the best places around the country.

Sophia immediately put on a shy little smile and bumped Aiden with her elbow. โ€œCome on, my sisterโ€™s right here. Stop it.โ€

Watching those two with all their youthful energy, I just sat there quietly, sipping my tea.

Things were finally looking up for Aiden at work, and Sophiaโ€™s attitude had improved a lot too.

โ€œVictoria, I got you a present. Itโ€™s not much, but I really hope you like it,โ€ Aiden said, handing me a long box.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ I asked, opening it with a bit of excitement. Inside was a gold necklace.

Sophia immediately flashed the chunky gold bracelet on her wrist. โ€œVictoria, Aiden got me one too. Isnโ€™t it pretty?โ€

I glanced at it and nodded. โ€œIt looks great. Aiden, just remember not to blow all your money at onceโ€“try to save a little, okay?โ€

Aiden gave a sheepish grin. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Victoria. Iโ€™ll work hard. Itโ€™s not every day I get to earn money on my own, so of course I want to spoil you and Mom and Dad first.โ€

โ€œWhat about my parents?โ€ Sophiaโ€™s face suddenly fell, and she shot Aiden a sideways look.

Aiden instantly caved and pinched her cheek. โ€œOf course I got them something too. And Iโ€™m paying for your brotherโ€™s entire high school tuition.โ€

Sophiaโ€™s expression finally softened, but she let out a sigh. โ€œMy parents donโ€™t have cushy or respectable jobs like yours. Theyโ€™re out there working in the dirt, rain or shine. I really hate that I canโ€™t do more for them. I feel like such a bad daughter.โ€

Aidenโ€™s heart went out to her. He wrapped his arm around her and said, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Sophia. With what weโ€™re capable of now, itโ€™s only a matter of time before your parents get to live the good life too.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Sophiaโ€™s eyes instantly brightened, and she gently rested her head on Aidenโ€™s shoulder. โ€œThatโ€™s amazing. I knew I chose the right person.โ€
