Chapter 571

I kept thinking about what Ryan had saidโ€“every word felt like a heavy stone pressing down on my heart.

Ryan called it his battlefieldโ€“a place of power plays and schemes, fought without smoke or gunfire, but people still get hurt, and blood is still spilled.

I squeezed my eyes shut and told Jared, โ€œDonโ€™t go after him. I broke up with him.โ€

โ€œWhen did that happen?โ€ Jared looked genuinely shocked. โ€œWait, you mean just now?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo, it was about half a month ago. It was pretty amicable, I guess.โ€

โ€œAmicable?โ€ Jared scoffed. โ€œIf it was really that peaceful, then why did he take off? And why do you look so out of it?โ€

I was stunned, my mouth half open, wanting to say something but not even knowing where to start.

Jared crossed his arms, sarcasm dripping from his voice. โ€œSee? Love isnโ€™t all sunshine and rainbows. Itโ€™s just dressed up to look nice, but in the end, it just leaves you hurt.โ€

I couldnโ€™t argue with him, but I didnโ€™t believe that love always ended in pain. Ryan hadnโ€™t hurt meโ€“he was just trying to protect me in his own way.

โ€œOh? Did I strike a nerve? Is that why youโ€™re speechless?โ€ Jared looked down at me with that superior attitude, clearly annoyed. โ€œVictoria, if youโ€™re going to mess around with love, you need a heart of steel. If you keep getting your heart broken every time you fall for someone, I seriously doubt youโ€™ll last as long as you did in your previous life.โ€

โ€œJared, youโ€™re so loud,โ€ I snapped, turning away from him.

Realizing heโ€™d crossed a line, Jared lowered his voice. โ€œSorry, I didnโ€™t mean to hurt you. I just donโ€™t want to see you get yourself hospitalized over some guy.โ€

I knew Jared was only acting this way because he cared, even if his worry made him a little harsh. I just didnโ€™t have it in me to give him a hard time.

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine, donโ€™t worry,โ€ I said, finally starting to get my head straight.

Ryan hated the Chamberlain family because they did things he utterly despised.

Forcing him into marriage and resorting to vile assassination attemptsโ€“thatโ€™s what made him so furious.

If the Chamberlain family really wanted to take my life just because I had a relationship with Ryan, then any revenge that came their way was completely justified.

I shouldnโ€™t keep beating myself upโ€“I need to focus on getting stronger.

All I can do now is find my own way to grow, maybe through my career. Who knows, maybe someday I could actually lend Ryan a hand. But honestly, the Jennings family is already a powerhouseโ€“even if I bust my ass, I doubt I could make much of a difference.

Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital. After wrapping up a few things at work, I flew back to Hachester with Jared.

That evening, Jared set up a family dinner for us, with Yvonne joining in.

Sally had been on edge lately because Jared didnโ€™t seem interested in getting married anytime soon.

Seeing me walk into the private room with him probably made me look a little more appealing to her.

She quickly stood up, all smiles. โ€œVictoria, did you come back from Braylin with Jared this time? So, does that mean you twoโ€”โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re just friends,โ€ I replied, catching on to what she was getting at.

โ€œFriends, huh? Exโ€“husband and exโ€“wife turning into friendsโ€“thatโ€™s something you donโ€™t see every day,โ€ Sally said, her smile slipping a little.

Jared just gave a small smirk and added, โ€œMom, itโ€™s a bit of both: family and friends.โ€

Sally shot him a look. โ€œJust eat your food. You talk too much.โ€

Yvonne sat beside us, giggling to herself, while Quinn just rolled her eyes and mouthed something silently that I couldnโ€™t catch.

When the conversation turned to me taking over as the hotelโ€™s general manager, Quinnโ€™s face immediately darkened.

โ€œJared, why are you always looking out for your exโ€“wife? Arenโ€™t you worried sheโ€™ll end up richer than you someday?โ€ Quinn had never liked meโ€“ever since the whole thing with Ryan, she just had to put me down no matter what I did.

Jared replied calmly, โ€œVictoria becoming more successful is great for Yvonne.โ€

Yvonne immediately grinned and chimed in, โ€œSo all the money you guys make will be mine one day!โ€

Sally gave her a playful tap on the head. โ€œLook at you, all excited. But you need to study hard and become someone amazing yourself.โ€

Yvonne puffed up her cheeks and said, โ€œOf course I will!โ€

Quinn still wasnโ€™t happy. She immediately stuck out her hand. โ€œHey, what about my cut? You promised to invest in my boutique last time, so cough up the cash already!โ€

Jared gave her a cool look. โ€œSend me a proposal, and Iโ€™ll see if itโ€™s worth investing in.โ€

Just then, James rushed in wearing a crisp blue suit. โ€œSorry Iโ€™m late! Traffic was a nightmare.โ€

Everyone turned to look at him as he sat down next to Sally like it was no big deal.

Sally rolled her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re getting up there in years, and you still dress like a peacock every single day. Look at Jaredโ€“heโ€™s not even as stylish as you.โ€

James just chuckled. โ€œJaredโ€™s never been stylish, not even when he was a kid.โ€

Jared glanced at his dadโ€™s flamboyant outfit with indifference, lips pressed together, saying nothing.

But Quinn hooked her arm through her dadโ€™s and said, โ€œMom, you just donโ€™t get fashion. Dadโ€™s totally pulling off this โ€˜silver foxโ€™ vibeโ€“I picked out the outfit myself! Right, Dad? Bet you had everyone turning to look at you, huh?โ€

James grinned and nodded. โ€œYou know it! A couple of ladies downstairs even asked for my number and wanted to know if I could dance.โ€
