Listen to this chapter:

Iโ€™m really grateful to have such open-minded parentsโ€”theyโ€™re always the ones who give me the strength to keep going.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Nathan looked at me, a bit surprised. โ€œItโ€™s just a minor wound. The doctor said the stitches can come out in a week.โ€

โ€œNo way. Iโ€™m staying to take care of you,โ€ I said, shaking my head and meeting his eyes with determination. โ€œDonโ€™t try to refuse me. Even if you try to kick me out, Iโ€™m not leaving.โ€

Nathan looked away for a moment, then snuck a glance at meโ€”his ears were tinged with red.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Victoria. Did I ruin your holiday plans?โ€ he asked softly.

โ€œReally, I didnโ€™t have anything special going on. Donโ€™t worry about it,โ€ I said, wanting to ease his mind.

That was just Nathanโ€”even though he got hurt because of me, he was still worried about how I felt. He was so selfless it made my heart ache, and at the same time, I couldnโ€™t help but be moved by him.

โ€œReally? You and Ryanโ€ฆ didnโ€™t you two have any plans for a trip or something?โ€ Nathan hesitated, his eyes flickering before he finally brought up Ryan.

I looked at him, caught off guard for a moment, then just laid it out. โ€œNathan, I broke up with Ryan not long ago. Weโ€™re done for good.โ€

Nathan looked stunned, staring at me. โ€œYou really broke up?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, we did. We just werenโ€™t right for each other.โ€

Nathanโ€™s gaze lingered on my face, as if he was searching for something in my expression.

I couldnโ€™t help but let out a wry smile, reaching out to cover his eyes. โ€œCome on, quit staring at me like that. People come and goโ€”itโ€™s just how life is.โ€

โ€œHow did you guys break up?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice was a little rough. โ€œWas it his idea, or did you end things?โ€

I felt awkward, really not wanting anyone to know what happened between me and Ryan. I just wanted to keep it to myself, locked away as my own secret.

โ€œCan we just not talk about it?โ€ I said quietly. โ€œHonestly, itโ€™s really nothing worth talking about.โ€

Seeing I didnโ€™t want to go there, Nathan didnโ€™t push. He just lowered his voice and said, โ€œAlright, I wonโ€™t ask. Are you still going to Braylin?โ€

I shook my head and glanced out the window. โ€œAfter the New Year holiday, Iโ€™m coming back to Hachester for work. Jared said heโ€™s going to give me a promotion and let me handle the hotel business on my own.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Nathanโ€™s breath hitched for a moment, then he looked at me, eyes shining. โ€œWelcome back.โ€

I pressed my lips together in a small smile. โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™m just escaping back here, so you donโ€™t have to welcome me.โ€

Suddenly, Nathan reached out and gently took my fingers, which were lying by my side.

Maybe it was all the worry, but my fingers were ice-cold. When his warm hand wrapped around mine, I instinctively flinched, but he didnโ€™t let goโ€”he just held on, firm and reassuring.

We didnโ€™t say another word. Nathan simply shut his eyes, still holding my fingers tight, as if he didnโ€™t want to let go of this moment.

โ€œNathan, itโ€™s already lunchtime. Is there anything you want to eat?โ€ I asked, feeling a bit uneasy with his hand wrapped around mine. We used to be so close, but now, after everything, that old intimacy just felt out of reach.

Things just arenโ€™t the same between us anymoreโ€”we canโ€™t go back to how it was.

Honestly, with the way things keep turning out, maybe I really am cursed when it comes to love. For now, Iโ€™m better off throwing myself into work and steering clear of romance.

โ€œAnythingโ€™s fine. You pick,โ€ Nathan replied, opening his eyes again. The warmth was back in his gaze, and his voice was gentle as ever.

โ€œLet me take a look at your care instructions,โ€ I said as I stood up, naturally slipping my hand out of his.

After going over the instructions, I said, โ€œIโ€™ll step out and see what I can find to eat.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ Nathan replied with a gentle smile and a nod.

As I headed downstairs and waited for the elevator, my phone rangโ€”it was Jared. He told me someone had recorded a video of us and uploaded it online, which was already stirring up some discussion. He also said heโ€™d taken it upon himself to get all the videos taken down, since Yvonne was in the footage.

Handling things so responsibly was one thing I could respect about Jared.

I said, my voice turning cold, โ€œJared, Tracy only came after me and Yvonne because of you. You need to clean this up for good.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Victoria. Maybe I pushed Tracy too hard, and thatโ€™s why she snapped. I really wish I was the one who got hurt todayโ€”Iโ€™m the one who shouldโ€™ve taken the fall,โ€ Jared said, guilt heavy in his voice.

โ€œWhatโ€™s done is done, and at least it didnโ€™t get any worse. But you need to make sure the Darwin family doesnโ€™t drag any more innocent people into this,โ€ I said seriously.

โ€œOf course. After what happened, Iโ€™ll have people watching the Darwin familyโ€™s every move, day and night. I promiseโ€”Iโ€™ll make sure nothing like this ever happens again,โ€ Jared assured me.

โ€œVictoria, Iโ€™ve hired two female bodyguards for you. Theyโ€™ll be at the hospital soon. Please, donโ€™t refuseโ€”Iโ€™m really begging you. I canโ€™t stand the thought of you getting hurt again,โ€ Jared said earnestly.

โ€œAlright, I get it,โ€ I replied. Honestly, having some security around is exactly what I need right now.

After I hung up, I headed out to get something light to eat and picked up some fruit as well.

When I came back to the room with the food and fruit Iโ€™d bought, I was surprised to find the place crowded with people.

Everyone turned to stare at me as I stood in the doorway.

โ€œMs. Murphyโ€ฆโ€ Steven Chase, Nathanโ€™s business partner, greeted me.

โ€œHello!โ€ I replied politely.

Nathan glanced around at the bustling room and said, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you all head back? If thereโ€™s any work, just bring it here.โ€

Steven turned to me and said, โ€œMs. Murphy, please look after Nathan for us. We need to get back to the office.โ€

โ€œI will. Donโ€™t worry, Mr. Chase,โ€ I replied with a polite nod.

Once everyone left, Nathan looked at me with that gentle gaze, and my heart skipped a beat.
