I grabbed a fruit knife, peeled and sliced an apple, then placed the plate beside him. “Go ahead.”

Nathan picked up a piece and took a bite. “This is so sweet.”

“Really? I just grabbed it at the store,” I said, taking a bite myself. “Where’s the sweetness? It’s just sour and tough.”

Nathan burst out laughing. “It’s only sweet because you peeled it for me.”

“Come on, Nathan, be serious and objective for once,” I teased, taking away the sour, tough apple and heading off to wash some blueberries and cherry tomatoes for us instead.

Around three in the afternoon, the female bodyguards Jared sent over arrived. Both had short hair and looked tough and fit.

One’s last name was Zhang, the other Liu. They seemed younger than me, so I just called them Little Zhang and Little Liu.

Around four in the afternoon, Nathan’s assistant showed up with a bunch of documents and even brought his laptop.

Nathan worked through his injury until seven o’clock. While he was busy, I crashed on the couch beside him and took a nap. I woke up to the sound of the nurse’s voice.

I blinked, still half-asleep, and saw the nurse getting ready to change Nathan’s bandage.

I immediately sat up and walked over to stand behind him. As the nurse carefully removed the bandage, revealing the scar from the stitches, my heart ached. I felt even more guilty about what had happened to Nathan.

After cleaning and putting on a new bandage, the nurse smiled and said, “Your husband’s in great shape.”

I just stared, speechless. ‘Did she really just say that?’ I thought, feeling my cheeks heat up.

Nathan instantly looked awkward, his ears turning a little red. ‘Guess he wasn’t expecting that compliment from the nurse either,’ I mused.

I reached out to gently tug Nathan’s shirt back down, my fingers accidentally brushing against his skin. ‘Wow, how does he manage to keep in such great shape with all that work? Talk about self-discipline… If I had half his willpower, I’d be unstoppable,’ I thought, a little starstruck.

“Let me do it,” Nathan mumbled, clearly embarrassed as he gently pushed my hand away and fixed his shirt himself. ‘Looks like I made him shy,’ I couldn’t help but smile to myself.

“It’s getting late. Is there anything you feel like eating tonight?” I asked him.

Nathan shook his head. “Nope, nothing in particular.”

I glanced out the window. “How about I go home and whip something up for you? I need to shower anyway.”

Nathan nodded. “Alright, you go ahead. But don’t bother cooking, just rest. I’ll have my assistant bring something over.”

Cooking would take forever, and after my shower, I’d have to rush back to look after him.

Yvonne called me just then.

“Mom, Grandma and I are heading to the hospital to see Nathan! We made some yummy food to bring over,” Yvonne chirped.

I honestly didn’t expect Sally to actually cook and bring something over. As soon as I hung up, I let Nathan know.

“Jared’s mom?” Nathan looked genuinely surprised. “Isn’t that a bit much? I feel bad making her go out of her way.”

I comforted him, “Don’t worry about it. Jared probably asked his mom to make dinner for you. Just relax and enjoy it. I’m going home for a quick shower, then I’ll be right back.”

Nathan nodded, then glanced at me. “By the way, Victoria, do you still have any of my clothes at your place?”

I froze for a second, racking my brain. ‘Wait, do I still have some of his shirts?’ I thought, a little flustered.

“I’ll check when I get home. If I find any, I’ll bring them over,” I replied.

Nathan’s eyes softened with a hint of a smile as he nodded. “Alright. Drive safe on your way back.”

Little Zhang and Little Liu were waiting for me out in the hallway. When I said I was heading home, one of them took the wheel and drove me, while the other followed behind in a second car.

Once I got home, I jumped straight into the shower. After I was done, I opened my closet and found two of Nathan’s shirts, a sweater, and a pair of dress pants he’d left here ages ago. I packed them up, thinking, ‘Guess he really did leave a little bit of himself behind.’

Right then, my phone rang.

I thought it was Nathan, so I hurried out to the living room to pick it up.

But to my surprise, it was an unfamiliar number.

I frowned, instantly on guard.

The phone rang once–I didn’t answer, and it stopped. Then, almost immediately, it started ringing again.

Guess I had no choice but to pick up. “Hello? Who’s calling?”

“It’s me, Edward.” His voice was low and sounded exhausted. “Just… don’t hang up, okay? I really need to talk to you.”
