Chapter 246: Rushing Everything Through in Half a Year
Maggie was confused. Getting married? She hoped Mrs. Harris wouldn't dislike her as she had in her previous life, but the sudden proposal felt like a rapid escalation. Besides, her current health condition made marriage unthinkable.
Suddenly, she realized her fantasies of marrying him and growing old together were unreachable dreams. She felt diffident, clinging to him despite having little to offer. This made her feel irresponsible, impeding both him and herself. She could only hope for temporary happiness.
"I think it's too soon to talk about marriage," Maggie told Mrs. Harris. "We can take it slow."
Mrs. Harris was surprised. Nathael was a highly sought-after bachelor, yet Maggie refused. Mrs. Harris admitted to herself that she suspected her son was losing his mind or that Maggie was feigning pregnancy to extort him. But she knew Nathael; he wouldn't be pressured into anything against his will. He must have agreed to this.
Yet, Maggie seemed unwilling. Nathael remained calm, turning to look at her. The intense gazes from his parents and Nathael himself overwhelmed her; she felt like a defendant on trial.
Nathael hadn't planned to discuss marriage, and her answer disheartened him. However, he was sensitive to her feelings, realizing she might like him, but not love himโshe could easily move on.
Mrs. Harris snapped out of her thoughts. "It is a little too soon," she said softly, "but considering the circumstances, we must rush it."
Marcus Harris nodded. "There's so much to do: renovating a house, preparing a guest list, designing a wedding dress, choosing a menu, and more. Even rushing, we'd barely make it in half a year."
Maggie was speechless. Half a year wasn't enough? "Why does it have to be done within half a year?" she asked.
Silence followed. Nathael's parents, though not sociable, were perceptive. Even they were speechless.
Demi Harris watched Nathael and Maggie, thinking, You'll be very pregnant in half a year, Maggie. Isn't it better to marry before the baby arrives? Apparently, Nathael's parents were trying to expedite the marriage before Maggie became too far along in her pregnancy.
Mrs. Harris didn't mention their other concern: Old Mr. Harris, who would strongly oppose the marriage.
