Chapter 247: I Haven't Done Well Enough

Nathael was Master Harris's favorite grandson, so naturally, a suitable wife had to be chosen for him. However, despite their wealth, the Camerons were considered second-tier. Their financial situation was far from favorable. Frankly, the Cameron daughterโ€”an adopted orphanโ€”was deemed unsuitable for Nathael.

This realization fueled Clara's anxiety, especially after recalling Nathael's request that she accompany someone to purchase Luster Corporation jewelry. The Camerons were known for their materialism and opportunism. Following a delivery failure, they promised to rectify the situation and offered multiple compensations to the influential clients they'd let down. Maggie was at the center of this mess.

The Camerons' treatment of Maggie seemed deceptive; her situation was precarious. Clara felt sorry for her. The girl had a difficult upbringing, and Clara suspected she'd witnessed the Camerons' manipulative tactics.

"Maggie, don't you want to marry my cousin?" Demi asked, her eyes full of curiosity.

It was unusual. Many women had eagerly sought to marry Nathael, yet this was the first refusal Clara had heard. Demi's question struck a chord with Maggie, leaving her speechless. Maintaining her composure, she replied, "Of course. Who wouldn't want to marry Nathael? It's just that we haven't spent enough time together, and there are things we need to figure out."

Nathael's scrutinizing gaze made Maggie's body go cold. She muttered a curse. She'd been naive. Nathael's sharp mind and penetrating gaze saw through her usual scheming. And she'd hoped to date him for several years before marriage. Given the circumstances, this wasn't feasible.

Clara smiled softly. "Your thinking is sound. Many couples appear happy before marriage, only to become resentful afterward. Caution is wise, especially considering Nathael's temperament."

Clara understood her son. His "bad temperament" wasn't explosive anger, but deep calculation, stubbornness, and a hidden emotional reserve. He wasn't easy to deal with.

Maggie felt guilty for rejecting Clara's kindness. A good relationship with her mother-in-law was rare, and she felt she was ruining everything.

Maggie subtly nudged Nathael, hoping he would defuse the tension. He simply said wistfully, "I haven't done well enough."

Maggie was distraught. Come on, dude! Don't be like that! she thought.

Marcus agreed. "You should be more attentive to Maggie. Discuss wedding plans together. Maggie, if he mistreats you, talk to Clara." Their support was overwhelming, a stark contrast to her previous life.

How had Marcus treated her then? They'd barely interacted. As a father-in-law, Marcus had little to say to a resentful daughter-in-law; Clara had handled most of the interaction. His only comment had been, "Though your eyes may be disabled, you as a person are not. There are many paths in life, and even if the one nearby is tough, you can always find your way."
