Chapter 368: You Seem Quite Leisurely

Maggie wrestled with the idea that her relationship with Nathael might not have a happy ending. She understood that tragedies were a part of life; she was grateful for her second chance, but she couldn't shake her reluctance.

Leo was surprised by her words, his eyes widening as he turned to her. He had known her for years; he knew she was cautious. She had given her all for the Camerons, but always with reservations. Her attitude toward Nathael, however, was different. While she had once disliked him, she now spoke recklessly, a behavior unlike her. Yet, Leo couldn't deny the sparkle in her eyes and the girlish charm she displayed in his presenceโ€”a willingness to entrust him with her life.

Sensing his gaze, Maggie smiled. "I'm just thinking aloud." The thought had crossed her mind briefly, but she knew it wasn't wiseโ€”not for the child, not for Nathael. She doubted she could accept Nathael marrying another woman, especially with a child involved. Few people treated stepchildren as their own; many parents neglected children from previous marriages after remarrying. She believed Nathael wasn't that type of person, but feared he might be alone forever, caring for their child. No matter what, it wouldn't be perfect. The thought of the child growing up without her protection troubled her. It felt irresponsible to bring a child into the world without careful consideration.

In the car, Leo broke the silence. "Sounds like you've given this serious thought."

"Yeah," Maggie admitted. She had never considered having children in her past life, and the idea now felt surreal. She envisioned a future with him, a life continuing in that way. Then, she withdrew the thought, acknowledging, "But I know I shouldn't."

Leo didn't offer an opinion, simply remarking, "He's lucky to have your trust."

Maggie smiled. "Yeah, because I like him."

Later:

Leo understood that liking someone wouldn't cause such bias; she hadn't been that way with Joseph. Maggie had feelings in her youth, but maintained distance. Even when giving her all, she kept her heart in a small, desolate corner. With Nathael, however, she was willing to love him completely and without reservation. Meeting his hesitation, Maggie's gaze was firm. "I trust you too, but I love him."

Leo's demeanor softened. "I know. I'll be here for you."

Maggie turned to the window, speaking softly, "Maybe you should consider getting a girlfriend if the opportunity arises." She was aware of his feelings, but considered him more like a brother.

Leo looked at her profile. "Sure." He had considered confessing his feelings but feared pushing her away. Moreover, he knew they weren't a good match. Their experiencesโ€”filled with schemes and darkness, tangled with conflicting interestsโ€”were too similar. He was even more suspicious and uneasy than she was, and knew he couldn't provide the happiness and warmth she deserved. But he didn't mind. He never intended to possess her; he simply wanted to be with her, to be there when she needed him, to ensure she wouldn't be alone.

Before long, they arrived at Iris's clinic. Yes, a clinic. In an era of large hospitals and medical centers, it seemed like a joke, but it existed. Located at the end of an alley, the modern signโ€”seemingly about to fallโ€”read "Siri Clinic." At first glance, it looked unconvincing. Maggie chuckled, "Siri Clinic? They didn't put much thought into the name. Who would dare go in?"

Leo calmly explained, "Siri is Iris spelled backward. She's rarely here, so few people come. Only those who know herโ€”mostly from the nearby alleyโ€”visit. If they're lucky enough to find her, she'll treat minor ailments for free." Thinking of the cold voice on the intercom, Maggie had a vague idea of Iris's personality.

Later Still:

Entering, they found two familiar faces. Timothy sat by the window in a simple diner-style setting, looking quite casual, fanning himself with a folding fan despite the cold.

Maggie commented, "It's freezing outside, and you're fanning yourself. Are you okay?"

Timothy raised an eyebrow, mischief in his pale eyes. "The heater's cranked up. What's wrong with fanning myself?"

Maggie let it go; he was right. While dilapidated outside, the clinic was warm inside. The window beside him was partly open, letting in a chill. A teapot and teacups sat on the old table. Timothy poured tea for them. "Have a seat. Ms. Hudson is with a patient. It'll be about half an hour."

Maggie and Leo sat. Light snow fell outside. "You seem quite leisurely, making tea and watching the snow," Maggie teased, removing her coat. Nathael worked tirelessly, yet Timothy, despite sharing his last name, seemed to live a slow-paced life.
