Chapter 65: You're So Childish
Nathael stared at the tightly closed door, his darkening eyes tinged with self-mockery. Despite knowing she wouldn't care, he stubbornly refused to leave, as if his presence could somehow make her feel sorry. Tears streamed uncontrollably down Maggie's face after she closed the door.
He doesn't understand that I feel heartbroken for him, that I feel uneasy, that I'm scared
Maggie hastily wiped away her tears, then turned and reopened the door. She was met with Nathael's dark, deep, lifeless eyes.
His Adam's apple bobbed, as if he wanted to speak. His eyes even shimmered at the sight of her. A bitter pang pierced Maggie. Although he had made her cry multiple times that day, he managed to make her feel like the villain.
He's a crook!
He's just been manipulating me and taking advantage of my kindness.
Silently, Maggie entered the room. Nathael stared at her back before following her in.
Maggie washed her face in the bathroom, tied up her hair, and returned to the living room with the medicine box. Without meeting his gaze, she coldly ordered, "Let me see your hand."
His pupils dark, Nathael extended his hand. Their hands brushed lightlyโhers warm and delicate, his cool yet sturdy. Maggie examined his injury: a large, swollen red mark marred the back of his long, fair hands with slender jointsโperfect for playing the piano. Though there was no blood, his "self-inflicted" injury brought tears to Maggie's eyes. Nathael remained silent; his cooperation was rare.
Only after a few seconds did Maggie softly inquire, "Does it hurt?"
"Not at all." Sensing her shift in mood, Nathael spoke gently, dismissing the injury.
In the next moment, Maggie looked up at him and cried, "You crook! You manipulated me!" Tears welled in her eyes, fueled by the injustice she felt.
Nathael pulled her into his arms and wiped away her tears. His Adam's apple bobbed as he asked, "Do you feel sorry for me?"
Pushing his hand away, Maggie coldly replied, "No, I'm just afraid of being indebted to you."
At her words, Nathael fell silent, his expression darkening. Maggie applied anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medicine, her lips pursed. She then retreated to the bathroom for a shower, ignoring him.
Nathael remained seated, brooding, his eyes dark. He was clearly in a foul mood. Suppressing his frustration, he approached the floor-to-ceiling window to make a phone call.
"Inform Jordan to discipline his daughter properly, or I will take matters into my own hands."
"Understood."
After ending the call, Nathael lit a cigarette, his eyes still dark. He had lost control, unable to restrain himself after seeing her laughing with those escorts.
After finishing his cigarette, Nathael noticed a thick stack of documents on the coffee tableโtransfer contracts for assets, each with sticky notes detailing the current business situation and future development of the company. The handwriting, likely a man's, was gentle yet sharp, clean and elegantโclearly not Maggie's.
Nathael's eyes darkened as he stared at the words before forcing himself to focus on the contracts. Under the warm light, his expression serious, he carefully reviewed each contract, jotting down opinions on the sticky notes for two before replacing them.
Shortly after, Maggie emerged from the bathroom, ignoring him as she headed to the kitchen to make pasta. She needed to organize those contracts and return to the Camerons' residence afterward, so she needed to eat.
Hearing movement, Nathael walked to the kitchen door, leaning against it as he watched her work. The kitchen's faint heat, contrasting with the dark night outside, added a touch of warmth. Nathael watched quietly; Maggie ignored him, but did bring him a plate.
After about ten minutes, she had made two plates of pasta. Nathael looked at the poached egg on his plate and thought of the heart-shaped poached egg she had ordered for him at the hotel.
"Why isn't it heart-shaped?" Nathael looked at Maggie, who was busy eating, with a displeased expression.
Maggie raised her head and gave him a fake smile. (He spanked me multiple times today, and I didn't kick him out only because he saved my life in my previous life. How dare he still expect a heart-shaped egg! Have I been too nice to him that he thinks I'm a pushover?) Maggie replied calmly, "That's what a normal poached egg looks like."
Nathael squinted at her and asked, "What happened to your kind heart?"
Maggie didn't even look up. "I lost it."
The next moment, a hand with a pink cartoon band-aid reached out and took Maggie's plate. Nathael stood beside her and growled, "Are you this angry, hmm?"
"Yes, even more so now!" Maggie, who had her plate taken away mid-meal, stomped her foot. She was livid! Looking into his deep black eyes, she felt this was karmic retribution. She reached out, saying, "Give it back."
"Poached egg," Nathael pursed his lips. Usually dignified and steady, he now seemed like a bully, making it clear he wouldn't stop until she made him a heart-shaped poached egg.
Furious, Maggie suspected Nathael was deliberately humiliating her.
"Mr. Harris, you're so childish."
Nathael chuckled, his eyes cold and sharp. He showed no intention of returning the plate.
Maggie sighed and stood up. "Fine. I'll finish your plate, then!" After all, he hadn't touched it, and there was more food on his plate than hers!
Without waiting for Nathael to react, Maggie picked up his plate, grabbed the fork, and ran a few steps away. Glancing back at Nathael, she quickly stuffed the poached egg into her mouth. Hmph, this man is no match for me!
When Nathael saw this, his face darkened slightly. (Last time, I didn't even get a bite. Will the same thing happen today?) But Maggie dared not run too fast because she was holding the plate. Soon, she and the plate were in Nathael's hands. She hurriedly took a bite of the remaining half of the poached egg, clearly not intending to leave him any. (This bully doesn't deserve to have poached eggsโฆ) Maggie looked up at Nathael with a smug expression, looking as if she had just won a fight.
The extraneous information at the end of each section ("12:44 Thu, 16 May," "394 + 0," "Balance: 1 Coins 1 Pearls") has been removed as it appears to be unrelated to the story text. The name "Nathach" was also a likely typo and corrected. The internal monologues were italicized for clarity. Sentence structure and punctuation were corrected throughout for improved flow and readability.
