Chapter 46
Severin hesitated, considering which car brand would be best. He reasoned that an Audi, or something similar, was the least he deserved, given his tens of millions in net worth. He worried, however, that maintaining too low a profile might invite karmic retribution for his past actions.
"Audi? Maserati? You've gone crazy with that little bit of money! That was your parents' hard-earned money. Are you going to spend it all? Have you forgotten your family still owes money to relatives? I overheard your parents talking about it!" Diane scolded him angrily. "Even with your money, you can't spend it recklessly. I only allowed you to buy clothes for me, Selene, and your parents—as recompense. As for the car, an expensive one is completely out of the question!"
Seeing Diane's genuine anger, Severin felt ashamed. He tried a different tack: "But what if I told you I have millions? Tens and tens of millions!"
Diane stared blankly. "Tens of millions? How's that possible? Who are you trying to fool?" She stormed away.
Severin felt speechless. He'd told the truth; believing him was her prerogative. Showing her his bank account would likely induce a heart attack—a scenario he wanted to avoid.
He decided to maintain a low profile for now, observing his relatives' reactions to his return. Widespread knowledge of his wealth would invite countless loan requests—a truly annoying prospect.
He chased after Diane, apologizing. "Okay, honey. No more bragging. I'll listen and buy whatever car you choose!"
Diane stopped. "I already decided. Let's get a Chevrolet Spark. It's just over ten thousand. As long as it gets us from Point A to Point B, it's more than enough!"
"You're right, honey. A car will be much better than walking!" Severin said, approvingly. Internally, he felt a surge of warmth. Diane's practicality was a welcome contrast to Lucy, who would have demanded a subway line if she knew about his millions! Her vanity knew no bounds. "I chose that car because you still need to repay your parents' debts! Selene also needs a better kindergarten—several thousand a semester! We need to save!" Diane smiled wryly.
"I never knew my wife was such a whiz with finances! Let's get that Chevy then!" Severin smiled.
They took a taxi to a Chevrolet dealership, purchased a Spark, and drove it home.
"By the way, honey, how did you know I was at the Richemont Hotel?" Severin asked.
"I went to your house, but you weren't there. Then I remembered Easton and Lucy's wedding and went there, worried you'd cause trouble. I didn't expect you actually would!"
Diane rolled her eyes. "Is it so hard to give your parents peace of mind? They're old. Their hearing about your troubles isn't good. I just want a peaceful future. That's enough."
"Okay, honey, don't worry! I'll make it up to you! This time, I'm officially bringing you to meet my parents!" Severin nodded seriously.
"Meet your parents?" Diane was speechless.
