Chapter 27
Mackenzie led the way, with Beatrix trailing behind. They could hear the respectful greetings of those around them. Although aloof, Mackenzie was not arrogant. She inclined her head to the more important corporate figures as a courtesy, a gesture that puffed up the chests of the men who received it.
Meanwhile, unable to see the source of the excitement, Emmanuel and Roselynn continued to enjoy their food. However, when Mackenzie ascended the stairs and swept her gaze across the room, she spotted her husband in a corner.
"What's going on?" she thought. "That man is sharing food with another woman, and they're chatting merrily?"
The polite smile vanished from Mackenzie's face, and the temperature around her plummeted. Why is he here? Is he cheating on me? Damn it!
Although she had told Emmanuel it was acceptable for him to date other women after their marriage, seeing him with another woman perturbed her. Fortunately, their marriage was a secret; otherwise, his presence with another woman would have ruined her reputation.
"Hmph!"
With a sudden scoff, Mackenzie stopped greeting people and left the ballroom. Beatrix, unable to read Mackenzie's mind, was baffled by the sudden change in her expression. Following Mackenzie's gaze, however, she spotted Emmanuel in the corner.
Never having seen Emmanuel before, Beatrix quickly pulled Mackenzie's personal assistant, Greta, closer and asked, "Who's that man?"
"Ms. Beatrix, that's Emmanuel Lowe."
"Oh!" Beatrix exclaimed, understanding dawning on her. "How dare he court other women here! Mackenzie caught him red-handed! If she's angry, she'll have a thousand and one ways to deal with him!"
"Lexi, keep an eye on that man for me, and come to me immediately if anything happens."
"Of course, Ms. Beatrix," Lexi replied, though confused. He's not your husband. If anything, I should be reporting to Ms. Mackenzie. She dared not voice these thoughts.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel and Roselynn were unaware they had been seen by Mackenzie and her cousin, or of Mackenzie's misunderstanding of his relationship with Roselynn. It was, to say the least, a strange situation.
"Roselynn, I don't see any handsome guys around. Why don't we go to another floor?" Emmanuel remembered his mother's instructions: he was married, and it was time for Roselynn to be married as well. Delaying would be risky for Roselynn's pregnancy.
"I'd love to enjoy more delicacies on other floors, but my invitation restricts me to the first floor," Roselynn replied, her expression indicating her inability to comply.
Just then, a sweet voice rang out.
"Roselynn! Dr. Lowe!"
The siblings turned to see a woman in a light green gown, smiling and approaching them. She was attractive, calm, and wore a brilliant diamond necklace that seemed to hold the universe within its sparkle.
"Claudette?"
Roselynn jumped up, excited, and hugged the woman. My boss arrived at just the right time!
