Chapter 85
However, compared to Annie, Lesley quickly regained her composure after the initial shock and understood the situation. She knew Rebecca's identity wasn't ordinary, and it wasn't surprising that she followed someone as influential as Lynn. But many people didn't know the truth.
When Rebecca returned to the hotel, she checked on the babies. The nanny had brought them to the hotel to stay with her, as Rebecca was there for the audition. Since she had some free time, Rebecca wanted to spend it with them.
"Take a break here for two days," Lynn told Rebecca. "The results should come out by then. I have other things to take care of, so I can't stay with you the whole time. If you need anything, call me. I'm nearby and will come right over."
Rebecca quickly agreed. "Okay, I understand. Thank you, Lynn. Just go ahead and take care of what you need to."
Lynn nodded and left.
After Lynn left, Rebecca fed both babies and played with them for a while. In the afternoon, Rebecca visited Charlie on the set of Reverse Days.
Everyone was excited to see her, and Rebecca generously ordered a large amount of delicious food, having it delivered to the shooting location.
"How was the audition this morning?" Charlie asked Rebecca with a smile, taking a break after finishing a scene.
Rebecca smiled and nodded. "I felt confident, but I ran into Lesley during the audition."
Charlie was surprised. "Lesley?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Did she make things difficult for you?" Charlie asked, slightly worried.
Rebecca shook her head. "No, we didn't even talk. She seemed to be with someone else. We were both there to audition for the female lead role in Lovey Princess."
"Lovey Princess?" Charlie murmured, then laughed. "Becky, if you pass the audition, I'll go find that director. I can guest star in your show and boost your popularity."
Rebecca laughed. "Charlie, if you do that for every show I'm in, then I'll have you in all my dramas."
Charlie raised an eyebrow. "Is that a problem?"
"No, not at all!" Rebecca smiled.
Charlie beamed. He wanted to do so not just for fun, but also because the entertainment industry was too complicated. If he didn't stay with her, Becky could easily become the target of internet trolls spreading vicious rumors, like "using charm to further oneself and selling herself for opportunities." Many keyboard warriors enjoy speculating about others with the worst intentions and feel jealous of those who are doing better than them, saying nasty things without guilt. As a woman, Rebecca could easily be targeted by such people if she attended shoots alone, and they would use her as an outlet for their dissatisfaction. However, things would be different if he were there. As long as he was present on set, everyone would understand that Rebecca was under his protection. Once Becky received her divorce license and made their relationship public, she would become the most favored princess of the Carter family. Any disparaging remarks would crumble. Rebecca stayed that afternoon, watching them film and learning acting techniques.
The Edwards family had been having a rough time. Melissa was hospitalized after learning that Janet's child was not Theodore's. Melissa never liked Janet, feeling she was beneath them. However, because Janet gave birth to Arthur, she loved him and had put up with Janet. "After all," she thought, "it's adults who make mistakes, not children, and the child is innocent." Arthur was Theodore's presumed lineage and a boy; they needed to take him back to the Edwards family. They had negotiated with Janet for months, running out of patience. But the paternity test revealed that Arthur was not part of their family at all. Melissa thought, "Janet is really bold, using a bastard to fool us. Does she think we're idiots?"
Theodore had been trapped in the hospital, facing Melissa's interrogation. They needed Theodore to clarify whether Janet's child was his, and the truth shocked them. It turned out Theodore himself orchestrated the whole thing. A year ago, Janet presented Theodore with evidence claiming Rebecca was promiscuous before her marriage, sleeping with many men, even getting pregnant and having an abortion at seventeen. Her parents, fearing Rebecca would ruin their reputation, changed her college application and sent her to a less prestigious university in Harzan. Theodore initially didn't believe it, but after an investigation, he discovered it was true. From then on, he felt disgusted by Rebecca. He couldn't accept that his wife was that kind of woman. During that difficult period, he didn't notice Janet was always by his side. Wanting to sleep with him, Janet slipped a drug into his drink and waited for him in his hotel room. But that day, he left a document at home, and after dinner, went home instead. When he arrived home, the drug kicked in, and he had a sexual encounter with Rebecca. That night, Theodore felt defiled by Rebecca, disgusted and dirty. After sobering up, he left and never wanted to see her again. Afterward, he was utterly repulsed by both Rebecca and Janet.
What made him even more disgusted was that Janet didn't give up after her first attempt failed. She tried to plot against him again soon after. Theodore wouldn't be fooled again. He was planning to leave, but he also wanted revenge. Because of Janet's plotting, Rebecca had a night with him. He couldn't let Janet get away with it. He quickly devised a new plan. He diverted Janet's attention, switched their glasses while she wasn't looking, and Janet drank the drugged wine. Then, he escorted Janet to a room and found a lecherous old man at the banquet to "serve" Janet.
