Chapter 42
Kylie thought, “No way. I can’t let anyone find out my invite is fake!” Her eyes flicked to Brynn’s neck. She thought, “A scarf in this heat? Something is definitely off.”
Mr. Harper is all over Brynn just because he’s smitten with her pretty face, right? If I can show Mr. Harper that Brynn’s a total tramp, he’ll never help her again! Kylie’s eyes flashed with a mean glint. She faked a twisted ankle and lunged at Brynn.
“Ah!” Kylie screamed.
Brynn thought Kylie was trying to frame her again, so she dodged to the side. But Kylie’s real target was the scarf around Brynn’s neck. As Brynn moved, Kylie yanked it right off.
Sure enough, there was a hickey. Kylie grinned in triumph and gasped for effect, “Oh my God, Brynn! Is that a hickey on your neck?”
She covered her mouth, pretending to be innocent. “Oops! I didn’t mean that. It’s probably just a mosquito bite, right?”
Her words were so obvious, and everyone got the hint right away. They started gossiping about the mark on Brynn’s neck.
Brynn was left speechless. She was about to explain when Chase, standing nearby, looked like he’d been slapped. He glared at Brynn in disbelief. “How can you be so shameless?”
Chase accused Brynn. “Did you really live with that guy?”
“Are you kidding me?” Brynn snapped. “What’s wrong with living with my own husband? Since when is it illegal for a married couple to live together? Mind your own business!”
Chase was left speechless. Brynn had a point. But he wasn’t giving up. “You don’t even know that guy, and you married him. You’ll definitely regret it!”
Brynn scoffed, “It’s none of your business. My husband is way better than you. He wouldn’t cheat on me. So I’ll never regret it!”
As soon as she said that, everyone thought of Chase’s affair with Kylie and couldn’t help but look at them both with disgust.
Someone even spoke up for Brynn, “I’ve seen shameless people, but never this shameless! A cheating jerk and a homewrecker. How dare you guys accuse Ms. Brynn Everett.”
“Exactly.” “So thick-skinned!”
Chase and Kylie’s faces burned with embarrassment.
Meanwhile, someone who recognized the scarf as a piece from Lucrèce Couture hesitantly picked it up from the ground. After a quick glance, they gasped in surprise. “Wait, is this a hand-embroidered piece by Ms. Vera Stitch?”
The exclamation immediately drew everyone’s attention to the scarf. The embroidery was incredibly lifelike, with perfect color matching, and every stitch was a masterpiece.
“Who’s Ms. Vera Stitch?” someone unfamiliar with her work asked in confusion.
Hearing this, someone knowledgeable quickly explained, “You don’t know Ms. Vera Stitch? She’s an up-and-coming embroidery master. Her skills are amazing, but she produces very few pieces, each one-of-a-kind. Her works are super expensive, with some selling for millions.”
Millions? Everyone present gasped in amazement. Even Brynn was taken aback. She knew her work was popular, but she had no idea it was worth that much.
I should check that bank account Lennon sent the money to, Brynn thought to herself. She had never bothered to check, thinking her embroidery wouldn’t fetch much.
Now, the most frustrated person was probably Kylie. She had planned to embarrass Brynn, but instead, Brynn was stealing the show again.
Kylie gritted her teeth, struggling to keep her expression neutral. Then she feigned admiration and said to Brynn, “Brynn, you’re really loaded. You can afford Lucrèce Couture dresses and Vera Stitch scarves. How much money did you save up to be this extravagant?”
Hearing this, Randy, who had been quietly standing by, couldn’t stay silent anymore. He stepped forward and glared at Brynn, “Tell me, where did you get all this money? You didn’t embezzle it from the company, did you?”
“Definitely!” Maris chimed in, her gaze on Brynn filled with disgust. “Brynn, can you say you didn’t embezzle money at the company? Otherwise, how could the Everett Group have so little money after all these years?”
Everyone else at the scene also started looking at Brynn suspiciously.
Brynn threw up her hands. “I’ve been clean at the Everett Group. If you don’t believe me, check it out. Besides, this dress was a gift from my husband, and I made this scarf myself. What does it have to do with the Everett family?”
‘How can they be so thick-skinned?’ she thought.
