Chapter 67
Today had been overwhelming for Brynn; she was both physically and emotionally exhausted. The moment she got home, she collapsed onto the sofa. However, she hadn’t even been lying there long when Dominic called. Brynn took a moment to collect herself before answering the phone. “Thank you for today…”
Although the online clarification post was anonymous, Brynn could guess it was Dominic’s work. “Fool, you’re my wife. If I don’t protect you, who will?” Dominic’s voice was soft with a smile.
Brynn felt a little embarrassed but quickly asked, “By the way, how did you get access to the hospital’s surveillance footage? Also… some of the angles seemed like they were filmed on purpose.”
Dominic wasn’t there, so how did he do it?
“It’s just a coincidence. I have a friend at that hospital,” Dominic replied calmly, already expecting Brynn’s question. He had prepared the excuse early on. “I showed him your photo, and he happened to see you arguing with Dr. Creed. He just took a casual shot.”
Brynn understood now. “No wonder you called me right after it happened.” She wondered how it could be so coincidental… Dominic usually didn’t go online. There’s no way he would’ve seen the trending news that quickly. But having a friend at the hospital made sense… But… Does Dominic have too many friends? And they always seem to show up at the right moment, just when she needs help.
“Honey, how do you always show up just in the nick of time?” Brynn squinted her eyes, testing him. “How come every time I have a problem, you’re always there to solve it?”
From the restaurant, to the dress, to Declan, and now to the hospital… It wasn’t that Brynn was overly suspicious, but so many coincidences were hard to ignore. She’d had doubts during the Suncrest Group banquet, but Dominic’s explanation had been flawless, so she temporarily suppressed her concerns.
“Maybe I’m just lucky,” Dominic smoothly changed the subject, “Otherwise, how could I have met someone as wonderful as you?”
The sudden compliment caught Brynn off guard – this was cheating! “Ah, cough, cough, I’m not as great as you say,” Brynn blushed but quickly returned to her previous question. “So, you…”
“Did it scare you today?” Dominic gently diverted again, his tone soft. “My friend said some reporters showed up and surrounded you. Are you okay?” Though he was changing the subject, it was still a genuine concern. He nearly couldn’t stop himself from rushing to her side. Even so, after seeing the video his team sent, Dominic’s heart still twisted. Would he have been able to protect Brynn if he’d been there?
“Don’t worry, I’ve seen worse,” Brynn reassured, “How could I get scared so easily? She hadn’t let it bother her too much.
Just as she was about to say something else, the doorbell rang. Brynn, puzzled, stood up to check. “Hold on, someone’s at the door. I’ll go see.” She quickly reached the door and opened it, only to find a well-dressed… delivery man. These days, delivery men wear suits too?
“Hello, are you Ms. Everett?” The delivery man smiled as he handed her a large box from the thermal container. “This is a snack Mr. Johnson ordered for you. Please accept it.”
Mr. Johnson? Brynn blinked, then took the box. “Thank you.” At the same time, she heard Dominic’s voice, filled with amusement, on the other end of the phone, “Did you get the dessert?”
As Brynn carried the box back inside, a smile formed on her face. “You ordered this for me?”
“Who else would it be?” Dominic raised an eyebrow. “Could it be some other Mr. Johnson?” There was a hint of jealousy in his voice.
Brynn quickly denied it. “Of course not, I knew it was you the moment I guessed.” As she entered the living room and opened the exquisite box, a sweet, enticing scent wafted out.
“If you’re feeling down, have something sweet,” Dominic’s gentle voice came through. “Brynn, don’t keep everything bottled up inside.”
Brynn paused as she held the dessert, her heart warming. She hadn’t realized… he could see right through her. She thought she had disguised it well. Her eyes welled up without her meaning to, and she realized how it felt to be cared for.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Dominic teased, his voice filled with affection. “You’re not crying from being moved, are you?”
Brynn laughed, her tone playful. “No way, do you think I’m that easy to coax?”
“Maybe not, but would a glass of sweet wine make you happier?”
Sweet wine? Where would that come from…
“Ding dong!” The doorbell rang again. Brynn froze. “No way…
In a minute, the coffee table had a glass of sweet wine, a plate of cut fruit, as well as a delicate red rose. Wow… This man knows how to spoil someone! Brynn’s heart was a mess of soft feelings.
“Are you happy now?” Dominic’s deep, amused voice came through the phone. She couldn’t help but grin. “Yes, very happy. You really know how to treat someone. Did you do this often with other girls before?”
Hearing Brynn’s teasing, Dominic laughed even more affectionately. “No, only you…”
“Mr. President, we have news!” The sudden voice interrupted their sweet exchange, and Dominic’s expression darkened. On the other end, Brynn’s face was full of shock…
