Chapter 78

Seeing Gary, who had been polite and friendly moments ago, suddenly change his attitude, Kylie was completely stunned. What was going on? Weren’t they getting along just fine? Why the sudden shift?

“Mr. Buckman, is there some kind of misunderstanding?” Kylie quickly tried to explain. “I’m not a fraud.”

“You lying cheat, and you’re still trying to fool me?” Gary looked at Kylie with pure disgust. When she refused to leave, he immediately pressed the service bell inside the private room.

“Mr. Buckman, I swear I’m not lying. I really am the Divine Doctor’s apprentice! You were the one who sought me out,” Kylie said anxiously.

That only made Gary angrier. How could he have been so blind? Just because she had the same last name as Ms. Everett, he had assumed she was the Divine Doctor’s apprentice? There were plenty of people with the last name Everett—this was just a coincidence!

Before long, a staff member arrived.

“Throw her out!” Gary ordered without hesitation.

Phew…finally, he didn’t have to put up with her anymore! Watching as Kylie was dragged away by the staff, Gary felt the frustration that had been clogging his chest finally dissipate. His whole body felt lighter.

Meanwhile, Kylie, now standing outside the restaurant, was completely baffled. She was certain her act had been flawless—so how had he suddenly decided she was a fraud?

“Was it that phone call?” She recalled that Gary’s attitude had only changed after taking the call.

No! She couldn’t give up now. She had finally found a lead on the Divine Doctor. She was just one step away from marrying into the Johnson family!

Taking a deep breath, Kylie turned toward the restaurant entrance, her eyes flashing with determination. She glared at the staff blocking the doorway and threatened, “Do you even know who I am? How dare you stop me?”

The doorman remained expressionless. “Sorry, Ma’am. The VIP guest who reserved the venue doesn’t want you inside. There’s nothing we can do.”

Kylie snapped, “I’m the heiress of the Everett Group! Do you all not want to work in Portmare anymore?”

The two doormen exchanged a glance, both looking unimpressed. Was this woman out of her mind? They were just employees. If this job didn’t work out, they’d just find another. What was she going to do—ban every business in Portmare from hiring workers?

Seeing them completely ignore her, Kylie was furious. She clenched her fists and prepared to force her way in.

At the same time, a taxi pulled up in front of the Pacific Hotel. Mrs. Johnson stepped out, holding a little girl’s hand. The child looked up at her grandmother and asked in a sweet, delicate voice, “Grandma, why are we here?”

“Be good, Zoe. There’s a doctor here who can cure you. Once you’re all better, you can go anywhere you want.” Mrs. Johnson gently stroked Zoe’s hair. The little girl’s pale face lit up with a weak but happy smile.

Time was of the essence. After saying that, Mrs. Johnson quickly led Zoe toward the restaurant entrance.

At that very moment, Kylie, having gathered her strength, charged straight for the door! In her blind rush, she didn’t even notice Zoe and crashed right into her. The sickly child was sent sprawling onto the ground. The impact was heavy—it was clear from the sound alone that the fall wasn’t light.

“Where did this little brat come from?” Kylie clutched her own arm, frowning in irritation. The impact had hurt her too.

“You’re not trying to scam me, are you?” Seeing the little girl remain motionless on the ground, Kylie’s expression twisted with impatience and disdain. But Mrs. Johnson’s face turned pale in an instant.

“Zoe!”
