Chapter 87

After hanging up the phone, Brynn was about to close her eyes and rest for a moment. But as she was rolling the window up, her peripheral vision caught sight of two familiar figures standing forlornly shivering in the cold wind. Brynn froze. Hadn't the wealthy lady said she was going to find a hotel? Why were they here!

At that moment, Mrs. Johnson was feeling utterly helpless. After leaving the Pacific Hotel, she had planned to take a cab with Zoe, but then realized her wallet was missing—she didn’t know when it had been stolen. Her phone had also been knocked out of her hands while she was trying to recover it, and though it had been fine just a moment ago, now it only flashed briefly before going completely dead, no matter how hard she pressed the screen. She thought about going to the bank, but she wasn’t familiar with the area, and after walking for what felt like forever, she still hadn’t seen a single bank.

“Zoe, are you cold?” Mrs. Johnson squatted down to look at Zoe and asked. Zoe, her face pale from the cold, obediently shook her head. “Grandma, Zoe’s not cold. Don’t worry about me.”

“You silly child…” Mrs. Johnson’s eyes misted up slightly as she pulled Zoe into her coat, holding her tightly. “Your hands are so cold, and you still want to fool me? You’re not allowed to do that again.”

Zoe nestled into Mrs. Johnson’s warm embrace, softly murmuring as she began rubbing her little hands on Mrs. Johnson’s coat. “Grandma, let me warm you up. The teacher says friction generates heat. If I rub your hands, you won’t be cold anymore.”

While the grandmother and granddaughter were cozily keeping each other warm, a taxi suddenly sped past. It wasn’t until the car stopped at a red light that Brynn snapped out of her thoughts. “This lady’s identity isn’t low. How could she end up stranded on the street?” Brynn frowned, speaking to herself, her face full of confusion. She hadn’t intended to get involved, but seeing an elderly woman and a little girl standing in the cold wind made her heart ache.

As the red light was about to turn green, Brynn hesitated for a moment, then said to the driver, “Please make a U-turn.”

“At the next intersection, this is a one-way.”

“Okay.”

After huddling together for warmth, Mrs. Johnson realized this wasn’t a sustainable solution. It was too cold. Mrs. Johnson could endure it, but Zoe couldn’t.

A battered and somewhat dented taxi screeched to a halt in front of them. Mr. Warm-Truretramannen bent down, then opened the car door. Wynn sighed and gave me… “Miss Yaverett, what brings you here?” Mrs. Johnson noted, looking genuinely surprised. Was it pressing try? Wynn replied, then decided to ask the question that had been on her mind: “Madam Smith, what are you two doing here?”

“Madam Sarath was three… Venta Vast…” Since Mrs. Johnson only told Brynn that her last name was Smith, Brynn simply referred to her as “Madam Smith.”

“I lost my wallet, and my phone broke,” Mrs. Johnson said, looking a bit embarrassed. “I couldn’t find any banks around here.” Even though she had a bank card with one hundred million dollars on it, she couldn’t access it without proper identification.

“Would you like me to take you to a nearby bank?” Brynn offered.

Mrs. Johnson’s face grew more embarrassed. “I don’t have my ID with me, so I can’t even check into a hotel.”

Brynn blinked, a little taken aback. The sky was getting darker, the wind was picking up, and the temperature was dropping rapidly. Sighing lightly, Brynn opened the car door. “Why don’t you both get in? If it gets too late, you can stay at my place for a bit.”

“Really? Thank you so much, Miss Everett,” Mrs. Johnson said, her gratitude overflowing, and her opinion of Brynn skyrocketed. Zoe, beaming, added, “Yay! We get to stay with mommy!”

About half an hour later, the taxi pulled up to the entrance of Brynn’s house. Brynn led Mrs. Johnson and Zoe into the house, saying, “This is my home. The guest room is on the second floor. I’ll grab some essentials for you later.” Since this was Dominic’s temporary marital home, Mrs. Johnson wasn’t aware of the details. She walked into the house, holding Zoe’s hand, her face full of gratitude. “Miss Everett, if it weren’t for you, I don’t know what Zoe and I would’ve done today.”

Then, she cleared her throat and, a bit hesitantly, asked, “If it’s not too forward, may I ask… Do you have a partner?”
