Chapter 90

When Mrs. Johnson heard her son’s words, she was stunned for a moment, struggling to find her voice. “You—you’re married? When did this happen?” This was way too sudden. “Why didn’t you tell us? Who’s your wife? Where is she from? What does she look like? Do you have a picture?”

As Mrs. Johnson fired off her questions like a machine gun, Dominic couldn’t help but feel a headache coming on. No wonder they were a couple… His parents’ reaction was exactly the same. But Brynn’s family situation was complicated. If they found out about her background and went to look for her, it might cause trouble for her.

Thinking this, Dominic hesitated and said, “Her family situation is a bit complicated. I’ll tell you more about it later.”

Mrs. Johnson furrowed her brows at this. ‘What could be so bad about his wife’s family? Complicated family situation… How complicated could it be? Dominic refusing to tell about his wife. Was he embarrassed by her? That can’t be good. Maybe she’s some kind of gold-digger!’ ‘Otherwise, why would Dominic secretly marry her without even telling us?’ With that thought, Mrs. Johnson instantly became disapproving of this unseen daughter-in-law. But her good upbringing kept her from saying anything harsh.

“Fine, but you’d better bring her to see me soon. You can’t keep her hidden forever, right?”

Dominic cleared his throat lightly. “Yeah… I need to talk to her about it first.” He hadn’t told Brynn about his identity yet. If he suddenly introduced her to his parents, Brynn would probably have a hard time processing everything.

“This still needs communication?” Mrs. Johnson asked, puzzled, her disapproval of this mysterious daughter-in-law growing stronger. ‘What kind of marriage is this, where the couple doesn’t even introduce each other to their parents? Is she hiding something?’

“She’s a little shy,” Dominic replied with a slight cough, feeling a bit uneasy. “Mom, let’s leave it for now. I have work to do.” With that, he hung up the phone.

Mrs. Johnson narrowed her eyes, thinking for a moment before dialing another number. Once the call connected, she ordered sharply, “Find out who my son’s wife is. I want all the information on her.”

At the same time, after hanging up the phone, Dominic called his subordinate into the office. “Did you find their exact location?” Knowing that his mother and Zoe had left, he had his team track their location. Their phones had been off before, but they should be able to trace them now.

“Yes, President. Old Mrs. Johnson and Miss Zoe are currently in Portmare.”

“Portmare?” Dominic furrowed his brows slightly. ‘Mom is in Portmare. Could she be looking for trouble with Brynn?’ The thought immediately darkened his expression, and he ordered, “Prepare a plane immediately, we’re heading to Portmare tonight.”

As his subordinate acknowledged and was about to leave, another rushed in, knocking on the door. “President, bad news! We’ve just received word that a diplomat from a neighboring country has secretly gone to Montivara.”

Dominic’s face darkened instantly. “Keep an eye on them. Report any updates immediately. Also, send a team to Montivara just in case.” His subordinate quickly responded, and after a brief silence, Dominic turned to another hesitant subordinate at the door. “Cancel the Portmare trip. Find the exact location of my mother and Zoe, and quietly send people to protect them. Make sure they don’t notice.”

“Understood.”

At the same time, after arranging for her son’s unseen wife to be investigated, Mrs. Johnson chuckled softly, then proceeded to remove her phone card. “That brat, does he think he can track me down? Dream on!” She raised an eyebrow, slipped the phone card into her pocket, and after finishing, returned to the dining table.

The next morning, when Brynn woke up, she found Zoe, the little pink bundle, still sound asleep. She carefully got out of bed and went to the guest bathroom to freshen up. After getting ready, she made breakfast. Just as she was frying an egg, her phone rang.

“Good morning, Mr. Buckman!” Brynn answered the call, puzzled. ‘Isn’t the official start date in three days? Why am I getting a call today?’

“Miss Everett, I’m so sorry to bother you so early…” As soon as the call was answered, Mr. Buckman immediately began with an apology.

Brynn sighed, feeling a bit exasperated. “Mr. Buckman, just get to the point.” She couldn’t shake the feeling that every time this old man called her, he was either apologizing or about to apologize. But she also felt bad for him—he was getting on in years.

Mr. Buckman cleared his throat awkwardly before speaking up. “It’s like this, Miss Everett. An elderly professor at the academy had a car accident last night, and he won’t be able to make it to class today. So… Would you mind stepping in for him?”

Brynn furrowed her brows. “So sudden?”

“Yes, it was just a last-minute thing this morning.” Mr. Buckman said with a sense of helplessness, “We really have no one else to ask, or I wouldn’t be bothering you. Is that possible?” He sounded a bit guilty. When they hired Brynn, he had hidden the fact that the academy was short on faculty. He wasn’t sure how she would react once she found out.

Brynn didn’t overthink it. “What subject does the professor teach?”

Mr. Buckman thought for a moment. “It’s about traditional herbs and medicine.”

“Alright,” Brynn agreed. “Just send me the class schedule, and the academy’s location too.” After all, she needed to visit the academy to investigate the truth behind her master’s death. The sooner she went, the sooner she could look into it.

“Thank you so much, Miss Everett! You’re truly a saint!” Suddenly being called a ‘saint’, Brynn was taken aback.
