She was not inexperienced. She found Grant's behavior contradictory and suspected that he hadn't actually solved the problem. Bessie also saw that Corrie had a crush on him. As Corrie's cousin, Bessie felt responsible for preventing her from being easily deceived.
Suddenly, she thought of Trevor.
"Could it be him?"
Bessie stared at Trevor beside her, but ultimately shook her head, dismissing her suspicions.
"I'm so stupid. How could it be him?"
She had witnessed Trevor's hard work at school to support himself. (The following sentence seems out of place and needs context to be properly incorporated. It's unclear who exclaimed and held Bessie's hand.)
"Yeah, I heard. Will you come with us, Trevor?"
Bessie still felt something was wrong with Grant's story; she believed he was lying. She didn't want to go to the villa with the group, but couldn't bear the thought of Corrie going without her. She needed to be there to guide her cousin and prevent her from making wrong decisions.
"Why are you asking Trevor to come with us? If he does, the villa staff might mistake him for a beggar and turn him away. That would be embarrassing," Bernard said mockingly.
