“Okay.”

Michael had brought Jason to the Wilder Group several times, but nothing had been finalized. Yet Nina only came once and was able to secure the top celebrity, Zack Linton, as the ambassador for Wilder Jewelry’s high-end line. That was the difference between heaven and earth.

Chris saw the trending news while still at the hospital. He hadn’t expected the Felton family to make headlines before the Hall family.

After some thought, Chris sent a congratulatory message to Nina.

Nina replied, “It’s all thanks to you, Chris. If it weren’t for your influence, Ms. Wilder wouldn’t have worked with me.”

Chris responded, “The Felton family has always been at the top of the entertainment industry. Jessica isn’t someone who acts purely on personal feelings—it’s all because of your own talent.”

Nina said, “Jessica even asked me today if I liked you. I told her you’re just like a brother to me. She got jealous. I should’ve just said I liked you.”

Chris was shocked and quickly replied, “Don’t say that. Jessica has a stubborn personality.”

Nina responded, “Don’t worry. I won’t interfere in your marriage. Anyway, I have a meeting now—got to go.”

In truth, Chris could tell that Nina had feelings for him. But from the start, he had only ever seen her as a sister. Chris didn’t have a biological sister, but back when they were neighbors, those two used to come over to eat all the time. Maybe they had known each other for too long—they were doomed to be only like siblings.

That evening when he got home, the TV was playing news about the Wilder Group and the Felton family. Jessica only glanced at it and said, “The Hall family must be anxious now. Michael’s been calling me constantly these days. I’ve just been redirecting his calls to the secretary department. I think it’s about to come to a head.”

By now, Jessica could openly speak about her plans with Michael in front of Chris. This was to make things very clear to Chris that, to her, Michael was nothing more than someone to be used and investigated; there was nothing else between them. Or perhaps there were. But those feelings were far too weak to outweigh the damage the Hall family had caused over the years. Jessica wasn’t someone who couldn’t tell right from wrong.

They had just finished dinner and were about to watch a new film. Both of them were so busy they didn’t have time to go to a cinema, so watching the film at home was the only option. Chris was in the kitchen preparing fruit while Jessica chose a film. At that moment, there was a knock at the door. Jessica had a sudden hunch—it must be Michael.

She messaged Jennifer to ask if Michael was home.

Jennifer replied, “He’s not. I was just about to tell you. He left about half an hour ago, carrying soup. He might have gone to see you.”

Jessica responded, “Oh, just great. And you’re only telling me this now?”

Jennifer replied, “Sorry, I was playing games and forgot.”

That was the kind of talent she paid a high salary to hire. Jessica sighed helplessly. Chris was about to open the door when Jessica quietly pulled him back. She put a finger to her lips.

“It’s Michael,” whispered Jessica.

Chris understood immediately. He looked toward the door, then shook the water off his hands and pointed toward the bedroom. “Then should I head inside?”

Jessica nodded. “No matter what you hear, don’t come out. Michael won’t hurt me. Don’t worry. I can handle this.”

She hugged him and kissed him on the forehead. “I trust you.”

With that, he went into the bedroom and closed the door. A couple of seconds later, Jessica went to open the door.

“Jessica!” Michael was visibly anxious. As soon as he saw her, he rushed inside and grabbed her arm to explain, “You’re still mad about that scandal the other day, aren’t you? I’ll have the company clarify it immediately!”

Jessica pretended to be angry, shook him off, and said nothing.
