Ever since they found out the matter involved Megan, Chris and Ashley had started full-scale surveillance on her and even brought Jake in on it.
In this regard, Jake, who had just been made a full-time employee, was more suitable than either of them.
To Megan, Jake was just a kid with a sweet personality who often brought snacks to share with the senior colleagues in the department.
Jake had worked several night shifts that happened to overlap with Meganโs, and over time, they had become familiar.
After Jakeโs promotion, Chris brought him straight into their circle.
Since Jessica wasnโt coming home lately, Chris wasnโt in a rush to return either, and instead took them all out to eat at the Cosmos.
Roy also rushed over from the main headquarters.
And Carl, Ashleyโs boyfriend, was there too.
โNo wonder you told me to keep an eye on Joseph back then,โ said Jake. โTurns out it was part of such a big case. You shouldโve told me earlier. Is Joseph safe now that heโs been discharged?โ
Roy replied, โHeโs under special protection. And the complex where he lives isnโt easy to get intoโheโs a celebrity, so of course heโs staying in a top-tier apartment.โ
Jake nodded. The life of the wealthy was indeed different.
Carl was fully informed of Ashleyโs situation.
โI remember Ashley mentioning Megan to meโwasnโt that a few months ago?โ Carl suddenly said.
Ashley turned his head to glance at Carl, frowning. โWhen did I ever say that?โ
โYou forgot? It was before you became the orthopedics director. There was a night shift when you ran into Megan. A critical patient came in after having a sudden heart attack at home, and you were complaining to me about how slowly Megan was handling the medication.โ
It was the kind of small detail only someone who truly loved Ashley would remember.
Even Ashley himself couldnโt remember when he ever said that.
After thinking for a while, he finally remembered that surgery.
โIt mustโve been during a night shift at the emergency department. The patient already had heart problems, and long-term overtime triggered a heart attack at home. By the time he arrived at the hospital, he was barely alive. It was a race against time, but Megan moved so slowly. She had no sense of professionalism at all.โ
Cardiology surgeries didnโt concern Ashley directly; he had only seen the incident from the observation room.
At the time, he wasnโt a department head and didnโt have the authority to speak up, so he had simply complained to his boyfriend at home.
โWhat happened to the patient?โ asked Roy.
Ashley shrugged. โFrom what I know, he died. He wasnโt likely to survive anyway. He had stopped breathing in the ambulance, and adrenaline along with other emergency measures didnโt work.โ
Roy thought for a moment. โCan you help me check if his last name was Johnson?โ
Chris, who had been silently looking at his phone, finally looked up when he heard that. โYou know him?โ

It wasnโt that Roy knew the person, but the cause and timing of death as well as the hospital that reported itโall matched suspiciously well.
The deceased had been a CFO at a company tied to the Hall Group. Roy had just traced a lead back to him, and within a week, the man was dead. Roy found the timing far too coincidental.
โAlright, Iโll look into it for you,โ said Ashley.
This dinner was also intended to help Jake understand what heโd be involved in from now on.
Neither Jessica nor Chris would ever shortchange Jake.
Once the matter was resolved, whether Jake wanted to stay at the Summit Infirmary or move on to another hospital, Jessica had the means to make it happen.
Eric finally understood why Shannon had been so concerned.
Michael seemed determined to spend every possible moment with Jessica.
There hadnโt been any meetings scheduled for lunch today, so a few of them had lunch in Jessicaโs suite, discussing the itinerary.
