This wasnโt a bad idea. After all, Megan had been threatened, and Roy also wanted to find a way to balance things out.
He nodded and followed Chrisโs lead, saying, โListen to your chairman. You can go for now. Donโt tell anyone about todayโs conversation, not even the Dr. Wood you mentioned. Do your best to stay hidden. If the culprit contacts you, call me.โ
He didnโt have business cards, so he tore off a piece of paper from the desk and quickly wrote down his name and phone number, handing it to Megan.
โFind a way to call me. Iโll make sure your child is safe. Starting tomorrow, Iโll arrange for someone to keep watch near your childโs school.โ
โOkay, okay, thank you, thank you so much.โ Meganโs eyes were still red. Everything that needed to be asked had been. Megan stood up and left.
Outside, Francesca opened the door for her, and only after she left did Chris call Francesca inside.
โWhat do you know about Dr. Wood, from Cardiology?โ
Francesca quickly recalled Hectorโs profile and answered in a straightforward manner, โDr. Woodโs family situation is a bit complicated. It seems his ex-wife cheated on him, the child wasnโt biologically his, and the child was taken away by the ex-wife. His parents are elderly, and heโs very filial. He spends most of his time at home with them.โ
That suggested the other party might have used Hectorโs parents to threaten him.
โHave Jake keep an eye on Hector. Make sure he doesnโt blow his cover. Jake doesnโt need to be on the same shifts as Megan for now. Try to schedule him with Hector during night shifts,โ said Chris.
Francesca immediately went downstairs to make the arrangements.
โHaving a secretary really makes a difference. Now youโre getting used to giving orders. Not bad.โ Roy lit a cigarette. There had been women in the room earlier, so he hadnโt smoked. When the pressure was too high or his mind was too active, a cigarette helped calm him down quickly.
โSo, what do you think?โ Roy asked Chris.
Stepping outside of his professional role, Chrisโs perspective tended to be more objective. By habit, Roy couldnโt afford to let any suspect go, which could sometimes lead to confusion.
Chris mentioned the theory he and Jessica had discussed the previous night. โJessica and I both thought it might be Luke. After all, heโs the only one currently in the pharmaceutical business. But after listening to Meganโs account, I no longer think itโs him. To be honest, Luke isnโt that clever. Thereโs no way he could have orchestrated such a detailed plan.โ
Roy puffed out some smoke and nodded. โYeah, I agree with you. If itโs not Luke, then it can only be Michael Aitairy. Mandy once exposed Aitairyโs scam while she was abroad. There might be confidential information about Aitairy on her hard drive.โ
More than 24 hours had passed. The police had set up surveillance at Mandyโs house. Everyone was on high alert, waiting for the kidnapperโs next move. All the intelligence they got from Megan showed that the net at the Summit Infirmary was already huge. Fortunately, Chris hadnโt startled the person behind everything.
โThat means there are probably many people like Megan and Hector. Trying to catch them all one by one could take a very long time.โ
By noon, Roy had already gone to Mandyโs house. Ashley and Jake were eating lunch in Chrisโs office. Francesca had specially ordered portions for the three of them.
โIโve seen the new schedule. Starting next week, Iโve got three consecutive night shifts with Hector. I havenโt really gotten to know him before.โ Jake picked all the onions out of his food.
