Chapter 159

Listen to this chapter:

This wasnโ€™t a bad idea. After all, Megan had been threatened, and Roy also wanted to find a way to balance things out.

He nodded and followed Chrisโ€™s lead, saying, โ€œListen to your chairman. You can go for now. Donโ€™t tell anyone about todayโ€™s conversation, not even the Dr. Wood you mentioned. Do your best to stay hidden. If the culprit contacts you, call me.โ€

He didnโ€™t have business cards, so he tore off a piece of paper from the desk and quickly wrote down his name and phone number, handing it to Megan.

โ€œFind a way to call me. Iโ€™ll make sure your child is safe. Starting tomorrow, Iโ€™ll arrange for someone to keep watch near your childโ€™s school.โ€

โ€œOkay, okay, thank you, thank you so much.โ€ Meganโ€™s eyes were still red. Everything that needed to be asked had been. Megan stood up and left.

Outside, Francesca opened the door for her, and only after she left did Chris call Francesca inside.

โ€œWhat do you know about Dr. Wood, from Cardiology?โ€

Francesca quickly recalled Hectorโ€™s profile and answered in a straightforward manner, โ€œDr. Woodโ€™s family situation is a bit complicated. It seems his ex-wife cheated on him, the child wasnโ€™t biologically his, and the child was taken away by the ex-wife. His parents are elderly, and heโ€™s very filial. He spends most of his time at home with them.โ€

That suggested the other party might have used Hectorโ€™s parents to threaten him.

โ€œHave Jake keep an eye on Hector. Make sure he doesnโ€™t blow his cover. Jake doesnโ€™t need to be on the same shifts as Megan for now. Try to schedule him with Hector during night shifts,โ€ said Chris.

Francesca immediately went downstairs to make the arrangements.

โ€œHaving a secretary really makes a difference. Now youโ€™re getting used to giving orders. Not bad.โ€ Roy lit a cigarette. There had been women in the room earlier, so he hadnโ€™t smoked. When the pressure was too high or his mind was too active, a cigarette helped calm him down quickly.

โ€œSo, what do you think?โ€ Roy asked Chris.

Stepping outside of his professional role, Chrisโ€™s perspective tended to be more objective. By habit, Roy couldnโ€™t afford to let any suspect go, which could sometimes lead to confusion.

Chris mentioned the theory he and Jessica had discussed the previous night. โ€œJessica and I both thought it might be Luke. After all, heโ€™s the only one currently in the pharmaceutical business. But after listening to Meganโ€™s account, I no longer think itโ€™s him. To be honest, Luke isnโ€™t that clever. Thereโ€™s no way he could have orchestrated such a detailed plan.โ€

Roy puffed out some smoke and nodded. โ€œYeah, I agree with you. If itโ€™s not Luke, then it can only be Michael Aitairy. Mandy once exposed Aitairyโ€™s scam while she was abroad. There might be confidential information about Aitairy on her hard drive.โ€

More than 24 hours had passed. The police had set up surveillance at Mandyโ€™s house. Everyone was on high alert, waiting for the kidnapperโ€™s next move. All the intelligence they got from Megan showed that the net at the Summit Infirmary was already huge. Fortunately, Chris hadnโ€™t startled the person behind everything.

โ€œThat means there are probably many people like Megan and Hector. Trying to catch them all one by one could take a very long time.โ€

By noon, Roy had already gone to Mandyโ€™s house. Ashley and Jake were eating lunch in Chrisโ€™s office. Francesca had specially ordered portions for the three of them.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen the new schedule. Starting next week, Iโ€™ve got three consecutive night shifts with Hector. I havenโ€™t really gotten to know him before.โ€ Jake picked all the onions out of his food.
