Chapter 160
Ashley sat beside Jake, watching his little habit. He was several years older than Jake and now saw him more like a younger brother. Seeing Jake picking out all the onions he didn’t like to eat, he couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless.
“Dr. Baker, how did you even get through medical school? As a doctor, how can you be such a picky eater?” Jake’s full name was Jake Baker.
“That’s in class, but when it comes to food I don’t like, I won’t go against my nature. Anyway, let’s not talk about that—I have surgery this afternoon.”
The group quickly finished eating. Jake hurried off in a rush.
Seeing that Chris remained silent, Ashley took out a cigarette and handed it to him. Chris hesitated for a few seconds but took it eventually. In fact, he did smoke, but rarely, due to professional habits. Plus, since he always stopped Jessica from smoking, he had to set an example at home, so his smoking frequency was extremely low. But today really had been mentally exhausting.
“Do you think Megan will run?” asked Ashley.
Chris smoked slowly. His actions showed that he didn’t smoke much. He paused for a few seconds and shook his head. “No. Megan cares most about her son. Captain Felton already said he’ll protect her son. If she leaves, the perpetrator definitely won’t let her go.”
Megan had done so much for the culprit, essentially becoming a liability. The culprit wouldn’t let her live. To stay safe, she had no choice but to remain in the Summit Infirmary. That was also why she kept helping over and over again without ever quitting.
“What do you think now? When Captain Felton left, his expression didn’t look great. Looks like his opinion is different from yours, so it’s not Luke behind this?” As someone involved in the case, Ashley naturally knew everything. Chris and Jessica never kept things like this from him.
“Judging by intellect—it doesn’t seem like him.” Chris stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. “If we’re going by IQ, it seems more like Michael. All these layers of planning—Luke isn’t that smart. But Michael is different.” Even though they were cousins, Luke had been spoiled and reckless for years in Cheria, while Michael was far more restrained.
“Michael had suffered abroad. Even marrying Helen wasn’t out of love—it was for her family background. He gave up on Jessica, his beautiful girlfriend of many years, just to gain that marriage alliance. It’s something I won’t be able to do.”
Chris looked over and saw Ashley replying to messages. Thinking of his lover, Chris couldn’t help but smile.
“In ancient times, you would’ve been the kind of foolish emperor who’d give up the kingdom for a beauty.”
“Not talking to you anymore. I’ve got a joint surgery this afternoon. You haven’t taken on any surgeries lately?”
“I have one next week. A joint consultation in another state. I’ll contact you then. Ortho will need to assist. I’m resting up these days to be at my best for that surgery.” Ashley nodded and put his phone away. “I’m off.”
Ever since Jennifer left the Hall family, Jessica could only observe Michael’s situation through surveillance. After returning to Cheria, Michael had been carefully building a devoted image, acting as though no woman could come near him except her. But what the surveillance showed was a completely different story. The Hall family had placed Michael as general manager of an entertainment company—like releasing a fish back into the sea. Just this month alone, Michael had brought countless women home. Whenever this happened, the nanny would leave with Jordan. The new nanny was also arranged by Shannon. She wasn’t as capable as Jennifer, but she was still excellent at discreet observation.
