Chapter 214
Helen shook her head.
If she had known, how could she have been so badly deceived by Michael? How could she have watched her parents die like that, ending up in such a situation–alone, even without her daughter?
“At first, I didn’t know about Michael’s connection to Aitairy. I only remembered that he had mentioned this company. Later, he said its assets were quite good. My father listened, invested, and in the end…”
Nina exchanged a glance with Jessica.
Jessica said, “Enough. Don’t dwell on it now. We need to solve the problem. And I already promised you–once everything is settled, I’ll make sure Jordan comes back to you. But honestly… I don’t think Michael is capable of taking good care of a child, let alone raising one properly.”
A selfish man like Michael only thought about himself.
This time, when he went abroad and returned under the identity of Elfa, he hadn’t considered the child at all. Even now, Jordan was still at home.
After a long silence, Helen finally said, “Actually, when I gave birth, I wanted to divorce Michael. I told him the child should stay with me–I could raise her no matter what. But Michael refused. He insisted on taking the child with him. I never understood why.”
Jordan wasn’t close to Helen because Michael had taken her away from birth. Helen had barely seen her, and Michael had probably told Jordan things like, "Your mother didn’t want you."
In short, to achieve his goals, Michael would have arranged everything so no one would suspect him.
“I remember meeting Jordan before,” someone said. “When I asked about Helen, Jordan said, ‘Mom didn’t want me. She gave me up when I was born. Dad brought me back.’ It looks like Michael spoke badly about Helen in front of the child many times.”
Roy leaned back on the sofa, feeling tired. Because of Michael, the entire major-crimes unit had been disbanded. Roy had been unusually idle recently, so he simply followed along to question Helen. Thinking about it now, Michael had hidden himself very well.
Even after marrying him, Helen had never known his true background.
“By the way, who arranged your marriage with Michael? Did your parents agree?”
Helen nodded. “Yes, they agreed. Our marriage was considered an alliance. The Hall family offered quite a lot of benefits, and all those benefits went to my family–they were considered a wedding gift. Michael didn’t keep any of it for himself. That’s why I always thought he was the one marrying into our family.”
Michael had traveled across the ocean, supposedly marrying into the Jills family. Originally, Helen should have been the one in the stronger position. But somehow, it had turned into this.
“Could the person backing the Hall family actually be Michael? Could it be that even his parents didn’t know that he was the one pulling the strings?” asked Chris.
Nina shook her head. “No. Michael always saw Helen as his shame–being controlled by others, even his marriage dictated to him. That’s why he would go to such extremes to destroy everything. It definitely isn’t him. Someone else was behind the Hall family.”
That person had hidden themselves too well. There was no information at all now.
After a pause, Chris looked at Helen. She seemed deeply distressed, especially during times like this.
“Don’t overthink it,” said Chris. “You’re under a lot of pressure right now, and it seems to affect your mental state. When this is over, I’ll find you a psychologist. You can’t go on like this–it’s bad for you, and it’s bad for taking care of your child.”
Helen closed her eyes. “I only want to avenge my parents. Jordan is my child. I can’t let her stay with someone like Michael.”
