Chapter 27
Sophie froze for a moment, clearly not understanding all that Jessica had just said.
โI just wanted these people to acknowledge Michael as my brother-in-law. I didnโt do anything that would harm the companyโs image!โ
โAs the CEO, if I had an affair while married, my personal reputation alone would cause many business opportunities to slip away from us. Sophie, what happens between me and Chris is not for you to meddle in. If it werenโt for Chris today, I would have to bear the shame of having an affair during my marriage. Tomorrow, the companyโs shareholders could demand my resignation. Do you want to destroy the Wilder family with your actions?โ
A string of questions came pouring out, and Sophie was stunned, unable to cover her face anymore. Instead, she looked at Chris in silence.
โButโฆ but you two are already divorced. As long as you admit that youโre divorced, you and Michael could be together!โ she said.
โThatโs my business.โ
Jessica was never a woman who could be easily manipulated, nor was she foolish. Thinking it over carefully, she realized who was truly behind all of this.
โMichael, I know the Hall family is pressuring you. After your divorce and bringing Jordan back, the Hall family has never acknowledged you. Iโll find a way to handle it. Sophieโs suggestion isnโt suitable for you. You shouldnโt be without a career.โ
Chris felt a pang in his heart when he heard this.
If Michael wasnโt supposed to be a man without a career, was he supposed to be? Was he supposed to just stay at home, do nothing, and be a useless man? If he hadnโt mentioned working at the hospital in front of the media today, perhaps tomorrow he would have been confined in the house again.
โJessica, I donโt want to make things difficult for you and Sophie. Iโll handle things with the Hall family. Jordan caused you trouble today, and Iโll have her apologize to you,โ said Michael as he got up to bring the child over.
But Jessica waved her hand. โItโs fine, you can go. Thereโs still a lot to handle.โ
Sophie didnโt want to leave. Michael whispered a few words in her ear and pulled the teary-eyed Sophie away.
โTodayโฆโ Jessica lowered her head, her hands pressing on her temples. โYou donโt need to resign from the hospital for now, but youโd better balance your work and family. If one day I come home and donโt see you, I will immediately have someone fire you.โ
Chris straightened up.
Finally, some peace and quiet. He could have a proper conversation with Jessica.
โFirst, weโre divorced. Iโm an independent adult. We have no relationship anymore, so itโs not up to you to fire me. Second, thatโs your home. Iโm not coming back. If you need me to play along at the company, contact me. Otherwise, thereโs no need for us to meet.โ
Jessica lifted her head and stared at Chris.
โI didnโt think you were this kind of person.โ
โReally? Maybe I loved you so much that I didnโt want you to see this side of me.โ
When the word โloveโ was mentioned, Jessicaโs previously tense body relaxed a little. She sighed. โI know you love me. Canโt we just live a good life together?โ
โWhat about today? Are we just going to let it go?โ
Jessica thought for a moment. โIโve already found a school for Sophie abroad. She should start learning to do something for herself. Itโs my fault and my momโs fault for spoiling her so much."
โJessica, stop pretending. I donโt believe you didnโt notice Michaelโs role in all of this. Or are you just unwilling to accept such a fact?โ
Jessica wasnโt a fool.
