Chapter 279

“Tired?” Jessica glanced at Chris, feeling a bit sorry for him. “Let’s finish eating early and hurry back, so we don’t hold them up too long.”

The worst of the fatigue had passed by then, so things were okay now. Actually, the meeting in the afternoon was when everyone was most tired. A group of people kept asking endless questions, all handled by Ashley and Francesca. Chris couldn’t even remember what he had said, as his mind was very unfocused.

“Ah, surviving a disaster,” Collin said as he served food to Jessica.

Jessica stared at him, “It wasn’t that bad. Mandy saw it too. The Montvue Tower location was far from the site of the landslide. We only had a power outage because of the landslide, but Blake and the rescue team restored it quickly, so it was nothing serious.”

“That was still dangerous,” said Jaden as he sized up Chris. “You worked hard too. I watched some footage Mandy took during her filming; quite a lot of ground had collapsed. You almost fell down a few times. Were you hurt?”

Chris shook his head. “Doctors don’t get hurt themselves. Lucas always told us to avoid risks. The rescue team was in front preventing any danger. It was actually fine. By the way, do you know the Lawson family from the northern part of the city?”

Collin and Jaden were rarely in the country, so their knowledge of Impelia wasn’t as extensive as Jessica’s. They had forgotten to ask on the way in the car.

Jessica calmly ate the food on her plate while Collin and Chris sat on either side of her, serving her dishes. She comfortably enjoyed the care of her friends and lover.

“The Lawson family from the northern part of the city? I remember Felix Lawson is the current head, right? What makes you bring them up? Was the Lawson family also involved in the medical support this time?”

Chris explained the matter about Natalie, and Jessica dismissed it. “That rich girl was probably just sent out to have some fun and insisted on coming because she had never seen a rescue scene. Someone like Natalie, even if she went to her own family hospital, would at most be a ‘figurehead‘ and wouldn’t be performing any surgeries.”

“Maybe.”

Considering Jessica and Chris were tired, they planned to finish soon. Nina and Roy arrived late, and Roy couldn’t even be bothered to eat anything. He kept on talking non-stop.

“I don’t even want to go into the details in terms of Luke’s condition. His future is definitely over. When he was rescued, he wasn’t conscious. Marcy had been really ruthless,” said Roy.

Jessica said, “Marcy had a good relationship with her boyfriend; they were about to get married but were torn apart by Luke. Her boyfriend was even killed. But even if Luke was rescued, you’re still preparing to arrest him, right?”

“Not now. Luke’s condition isn’t suitable for a formal trial, so we can only record his statement at the hospital. But as soon as we arrive, Mrs. Zorro cries and causes a scene at the door, blaming us for not being able to rescue him in time.”

“That’s all the Hall family can do,” said Collin.

Jaden added, “Luke’s downfall is actually good for Thomas; it means no one will compete for his position. From the perspective of the mastermind, Luke is much easier to control than Thomas.”

If Luke had been fine, no one knew when he might have replaced Thomas. Now, he was just a cripple. There was no way he could inherit the Hall family.

“Losing a rival is good, but only Thomas sees Luke as a rival,” said Jaden.

As night fell, Jessica and Chris went home together. Jessica took a shower, and when she came out, she saw Chris already asleep, lying on the bed.

His hair was still wet.

Jessica sat at the bedside and gently wiped his hair with a towel, managing not to wake him.

She carefully moved Chris onto the pillow and turned over.

“I know you care about me,” Jessica said softly, kissing Chris’s lips.
