Chapter 44
Chris felt a bitter sadness in his heart. He hadnโt mentioned it because he never had the chance, and Jessica never cared about the people around him.
Seeing Chris remain silent, she seemed to notice something and cleared her throat. She said, โThe Felton family and the Wilder Group are working together in a lot of areas; you two can meet more often in the future.โ
Jessica was in a good mood and was about to lean in for another kiss when footsteps were heard.
โJessica?โ
It was a manโs voice, gentle but filled with surpriseโhe hadnโt expected to see such a scene. Upon hearing the voice, Jessica felt uneasy and turned around hastily.
Sure enough, it was Michael. His face was pale, and he held a thermos, standing at the end of the corridor looking somewhat lost. โMichael? Why are you here?โ Jessica took a step back.
Chris chuckled lightly; he already knew that as long as Michael appeared, Jessica wouldnโt continue. In fact, he felt a bit relievedโhaving Michael see this scene would surely be a shock for him.
Michael glanced at Chris hesitantly, then approached Jessica with a wronged expression. He said, โI heard you were here for dinner and made you some soup to help with the hangover. I didnโt expectโฆ Chris to be here taking care of you, too.โ
โNo, heโs just eating here.โ Jessica quickly distanced herself. She didnโt want Chris involved in her business circles.
โOh, I see. Hereโs the soup.โ Michael brightened a bit when he heard they werenโt together, stuffing the thermos into Jessicaโs hand. โHave you finished eating? Are you still hungry? How about I cook something for you to fill your stomach?โ
This warm and touching scene was something Chris could no longer watch. He was about to turn and go back to the private room when Roy kicked the door open, one hand holding the doorframe.
The loud bang of the door hitting the wall startled several people outside. Chris remained calm. Royโs temper had always been bad, and he couldnโt stand anyone bullying himโhe had been like this since childhood.
No matter what his relationship with Jessica was now, they had still called each other husband and wife moments ago. Then a man appeared, offering soup and showing concern; anyone could tell who Michael was.
Seeing Roy, Jessica relaxed. She couldnโt openly confront Michael, but no one in the Felton family could control Roy. Even when the Hall family was at its peak, they still had to listen to the Felton family, let alone Michael.
Michael had spent little time in the country these years and obviously didnโt recognize Roy. He was only startled by the kick and instinctively tried to hide behind Jessica.
Roy smiled, showing his white teeth, and stared at the thermos in Jessicaโs hand. He said, โYo, Jessica, have you hired a male nanny? Someone is even bringing you soup at a drinking party. Being the boss really does get different treatment.โ
Jessica said nothing.
Michaelโs face flushed at being called a male nanny, and he retorted, โIโm not a nanny, Iโmโฆ Iโm Jessicaโs friend.โ
โFriend?โ Roy walked over, grabbed the thermos, and swung it in the air a few times. โThen I donโt get it. Youโre not a nanny, so why are you so eager to bring soup? Jessica is here for business; my good friend and I are both here. What are you doing here?โ
Intimidated by Royโs presence, Michael dared not continue and could only turn a wronged expression toward Chris. He said, โChris, I mean no harm. Jessica said that you were staying at the hospital lately, and I was just worried that if she drank too much, no one would be there to take care of her.โ He subconsciously covered a previous injury.
Chris lowered his eyes and glanced at him, silently admiring Michaelโs performance.
