Chapter 45
Chris smiled and shook his head, snatching the thermos back from Royโs hand and tossing it to Jessica.
โIf you want to take care of her, go ahead. I wonโt disturb you.โ
He pulled Roy back into the private room and closed the door.
Meanwhile, with Royโs help, Jessica was in a good mood. She hadnโt brought Michael to the drinking party; it was better that the head of the Fame Group didnโt see Michael. Before things were settled, all the Hall family members could only put on a polite front.
Besides the private rooms, there were some scattered tables on the first floor, usually serving a few walk-in customers at noon, but only up to ten tables. At that moment, all were empty.
The two found a place to sit, and Michael asked the manager for a bowl. He seemed completely unfazed by the earlier sarcasm, smiling with red-rimmed eyes as he helped Jessica serve the soup.
Jessica lowered her head and took two sips, not daring to drink more.
โThe guy just now was Chrisโs friend? He looked like he had a bad temper and even misunderstood your relationship with me. Hopefully, he wonโt make Chris think too much.โ
Now she secretly hoped Chris would think more, better than having no thoughts of her at all.
โThatโs Roy.โ
Jessica raised her head and saw the shock in Michaelโs eyes, then deliberately asked, โDo you know him? He was originally the heir of the Felton family, but he chose a career in law enforcement, not business.โ
Michael was greatly shocked deep down. He wondered how Chris could know someone like that.
โOh, thatโs Roy? Iโve heard of him but never met him. I havenโt been back to the country in years and donโt know much about the domestic situation. They look very closeโlike brothers.โ Michael sounded jealous. โYou and Chris have clearly divorced, yet you still have to pretend for the Wilder Groupโs sakeโฆโ
โAlright, alright. Whatโs there to be jealous about?โ Jessica acted coy, like they just started dating, holding Michaelโs hand. โItโs all for the Wilder Group. I canโt just watch my motherโs lifelong effort collapse like this. Michael, Iโm lucky to have you by my side.โ
โWhatโs the matter with you?โ
After closing the door, Roy forcefully pushed Chris into a chair, his voice turning cold.
โDidnโt you say you divorced? Whoโs that man? Looks like a homewrecker to me.โ
Chris couldnโt help but laugh and poured Roy a cup of tea.
โYou seem to know quite a lot.โ
Roy wouldnโt let Chris change the subject.
โHurry up and tell me. Donโt make me find out myself.โ
He knew Royโs skillsโif he wanted to look into something, it wouldnโt take an hour.
โAlright, alright. Heโs Jessicaโs first love. Back then, it was because he went abroad that Jessica, heartbroken, married me. We really are divorced. Recently, there was online gossip about her cheating. It doesnโt affect her image, but the Wilder Group was founded by her mother, and Mrs. Wilder treats me well. We are working together as partners now.โ
Roy didnโt expect things to be so complicated. He clicked his tongue twice.
โYouโre too naive, not suited to mix with the business world. I think Michael wants to take your place; are you going to just let him?โ
Chris took a sip of tea himself.
โWhat else could I do? I canโt really turn down the divorce and remain as Jessicaโs husband, can I? Would that disgust them, or me? Forget itโIโve already wasted five years.โ
โHave you really thought it through? Why didnโt you go for the exchange study in Lonat then?โ
Roy knew about that matter, just as Chris had expected. Chris didnโt hide anything either.
โThe Wilder Group happened to be in trouble. Once itโs settled, Iโll leave. The internship opportunity at the Summit Infirmary is rare, and I want to gain experience. Itโs good for me.โ
Roy stared intently into Chrisโs eyes, as if trying to see his true feelings.
