Chapter 60
Chris was the first to notice the man on the ground. He ignored his own wound and quickly rushed over, squatting down to examine the situation.
โSir, sir, how are you feeling?โ he asked urgently.
The man who had been punched clutched his chest and struggled to breathe. His lips had turned a deep shade of purple.
Chris immediately recognized the signs of a heart condition and began searching the manโs body for medication.
But after searching for a long while, he couldnโt find anything. He turned to Jake and said, โCall an ambulance.โ
He also asked the restaurant owner to call the police.
The ambulance arrived with a wail of sirens. Chris and Jake rode along with the paramedics.
At the scene, Chris had performed emergency treatment, but by the time they were in the ambulance, the manโs breathing was still faint.
โComing on a business trip and running into this kind of situationโฆโ Jake sighed. Then he glanced at Chrisโs face and added, โYou should get that wound on your face disinfected.โ
Chris raised a hand to touch his face. Only then did he notice the slight sting. He shook his head and said he was fine.
The manโs family arrived quickly and heard the full account from the restaurant staff.
Seeing that everything was in order, Chris and Jake left.
He thought it was just a minor incident. The man who had caused the disturbance was even taken into custody.
Chris focused all his attention on the joint consultation.
But two days before they were due to return, Jake suddenly rushed out of the bathroom holding his phone.
โLook online, quick! That day when you saved that guyโitโs gone viral!โ
Doctors saving people and ending up online wasnโt new.
Chris was on a call with Jessica and just glanced briefly, not expecting the headline to read:
Irresponsible Doctor Causes Death Through Excessive Emergency Treatment!
Should This Kind of Doctor Be Allowed to Keep Practicing?
Tesalfield Doctorโs On-Site Treatment Leads to Fatality
โHello? Whatโs wrong?โ Jessica asked when Chris suddenly went silent. She immediately started searching for Tesalfield news as well.
Chris frowned deeply.
Every step of his emergency care had followed correct procedure.
The man had suffered a heart attack because of the assault, and doctors had simply failed to save him. An official explanation had already been issued.
Why would someone still upload that online?
On the other end of the line, Jessica called out to him a few more times.
โItโs nothingโฆ my mentorโs calling me. Iโll call you back later.โ
With that, Chris hung up the phone.
Jessica, having also seen the trending topic, immediately instructed Shannon to find out what was going on.
The next day, Chris was supposed to perform surgery.
But the growing public outrage and the deceased manโs family causing a scene near the hospital forced the medical team to remove Chris from the final operation.
Jake was furious.
โI think these people are just trying to extort money,โ he said, pacing in the dorm and glaring at the flood of online hate. He looked like he was about to grab a mic and start shouting back.
โIt doesnโt matter. My treatment was completely professionalโthereโs absolutely no issue.โ
A man with a clear conscience didnโt fear shadows. Chris wasnโt worried at all.
After a moment, Jake let out a heavy sigh.
โYouโฆ you really donโt understand how vicious online opinion can be. Letโs just see what the professor says.โ
There were still some rational voices online.
Medical students analyzed the surveillance and video angles, and concluded that Chrisโs technique had been highly professional. That level of pressure couldnโt have caused death.
But that wasnโt the kind of answer the gossip-hungry public wanted.
Those voices of reason were quickly drowned out.
Bang!
Jessica hurled something across the room again.
Shannon stood outside the door, looking helpless. She turned to Maggie and said, โGo get another ashtray. Donโt go in for now.โ
Maggie turned and left immediately.
When the room finally went quiet, Shannon knocked and entered.
โHave you found out anything?โ
Jessica stood by the massive French window, smoking. From the doorway, her expression was completely hidden. It was rare for a woman like her to smoke.
