Listen to this chapter:

โ€œYouโ€™re still angry?โ€ Chris asked tentatively.

Jessica lifted her eyelids and looked at him. โ€œDoes it matter if Iโ€™m angry? Iโ€™m a divorced ex-wife; you probably donโ€™t care about my feelings anyway.โ€

Chris was rendered speechless. This was quite troublesome. Both of them ate the meal somewhat impatiently. Chris grabbed the empty lunch box and left the company. He buckled his seatbelt, but the car window was suddenly tapped on. He turned his head to look. It was Michael.

Remembering the document he had just seen, Chris frowned slightly.

โ€œMr. Green,โ€ Michael leaned against the car window. โ€œYou really are a ghost who never leaves. I thought after you divorced Jessica, youโ€™d be gone. How come youโ€™re still showing up?โ€

Chris replied, โ€œIโ€™m nothing compared to you. You left five years ago. You can still show up now. I have to say, Jessica is quite a sentimental woman.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m different from you,โ€ Michael said confidently. โ€œYou come to the company cooking and delivering food like a woman. Iโ€™m here to talk business. Iโ€™m the one who really suits Jessica.โ€

So that was it. Jessica had clearly found out it was Michael who hired the online trolls, yet she still chose to cooperate with him. Seeing Chrisโ€™s face stiffen a bit, Michael was in a good mood. For a moment, Chris recalled what Roy had said. โ€œYou have to trust your lover.โ€ Since Jessica did not choose to reconcile with Michael but struggled with him instead, it meant she had feelings for Chris. If Michaelโ€™s place in Jessicaโ€™s heart was truly that important, she wouldnโ€™t have traveled so far to clear Chrisโ€™s name. He couldnโ€™t feel inferior.

โ€œMr. Hall, I think youโ€™re like a woman,โ€ said Chris, tapping his hand on the steering wheel a few times. โ€œIf youโ€™re a man and like someone, just openly come and fight for her. Donโ€™t use womenโ€™s tricks, doing sneaky things behind othersโ€™ backs. Buying online trolls isnโ€™t a skill. If youโ€™re so capable, why donโ€™t you come knock on her door and fight for her?โ€

Michael was stunned for a moment. โ€œYou!โ€

Chris retorted, โ€œWant to know how I found out? You canโ€™t have forgotten my relationship with Roy. When I was insulted online, my friend wouldnโ€™t just stand and watch. Everyone received lawyerโ€™s letters. I think you havenโ€™t received yours yetโ€”shall I send it to you now?โ€

This time, Michael was caught off guard and couldnโ€™t respond. He stood up straight, gripping the car door tightly. โ€œDonโ€™t think youโ€™ll be arrogant just because Roy is backing you up. Your good days wonโ€™t last. As long as I get a firm foothold in the Hall family, Iโ€™ll be a perfect match for Jessica.โ€

โ€œSo what?โ€ Chris tilted his head and smiled, thinking of Mrs. Wilder.

Mrs. Wilder had disliked Michael from the start and obstructed their relationship. That wouldnโ€™t change just because five years had passed. Moreover, it was clear that she liked Chris more. In the end, it still came down to leveraging his mother-in-lawโ€™s favor.

Chris asked, โ€œDid Mrs. Wilder agree?โ€ Mrs. Wilder was always the difficult obstacle for Michael.

โ€œRight now, the Wilder Group is controlled by Jessica. Mrs. Wilder has already retired. If I want to be with Jessica, I donโ€™t need anyoneโ€™s approval.โ€

Chris pushed Michaelโ€™s hand away and started the car. โ€œThen I wish you success.โ€

On the way, Chris thought about how long he and Jessica had struggled, yet he had never visited Mrs. Wilder. With so many troubles at the Wilder Group, Mrs. Wilder must be anxious. He pretended to act with Jessica in public, but deep downโ€ฆ his determination to leave Jessica had indeed wavered. Since Jessica didnโ€™t have time to visit her mother, it was fine for him to do it instead.

Taking advantage of a rare day off, Chris bought some supplements and drove straight to the Wilder familyโ€™s residence. Mrs. Wilder truly liked Chris.
