Episode 27
“Yes,” Carrie said, her eyes sweeping past Elijah, rendering him invisible.
Once Sandra nodded her readiness, the director called, “Alright, Elizabeth, you’re up first.”
Elizabeth blinked in surprise but remained silent. She nodded firmly and began her scene with Stewart.
About thirty minutes later, Elizabeth finished her audition to approving nods. Now it was Sandra’s turn.
As Sandra began, both the screenwriter and Stewart frowned. She stumbled early on, and her performance faltered. Whether from nerves or another cause was unclear, but she struggled to keep pace with Stewart. Even the director couldn't hide his dismay.
He’d intentionally had Elizabeth audition first, a calculated strategy. He'd given Sandra the script well in advance, while Elizabeth received hers that day, giving Sandra a significant advantage. He hoped Elizabeth’s performance would highlight any potential pitfalls, allowing Sandra to adjust accordingly.
However, Sandra wasn't just subpar; she was comprehensively outclassed. In every aspect—lines, expressions, and improvisation—Elizabeth shone. Even Elijah, whose acting expertise was limited, recognized the stark difference.
The director, previously focused on logistics, now wore a troubled expression. Sandra apologized, her eyes welling as she looked at Elijah. “I know I let you down,” she confessed, “I wasn’t at my best. I’m sorry.”
With a blend of frustration and empathy, the director replied, aware of Elijah’s presence, “Since today isn’t your day, let’s try again.” Stewart again partnered with Sandra.
