Chapter 300
Gritting her teeth, she snapped a photo of Alariekaโs back and immediately sent it to Kieran Argent.
Perhaps nearing lunch break, Kieran replied instantly: โ?โ
The housemaid froze, unprepared for his unprecedented promptness. Previously, heโd only respond hours after her full reports.
Without overthinking, she clumsily typed: โMr. Argent, Ms. Huston insists on going out alone. She refuses to let me accompany her despite all persuasion.โ
Within thirty seconds of sending, Kieranโs call rang through.
Auntie answered immediately: โMr. Argent.โ
Kieranโs low voice came through: โWhere is she going?โ
The auntโs voice dropped even lower: โMs. Huston wouldnโt tell me. Sheโฆ she doesnโt want you to know where sheโs going.โ
Expecting Kieranโs anger, the aunt was surprised when he only gave a faint โhmmโ: โIf she says not to follow, then donโt.โ
Who knew this seemingly intimidating Mr. Argent could be surprisingly reasonable? Sheโd braced for a scolding.
The aunt quietly sighed in relief: โAlright.โ
Kieran asked: โAnything else?โ
Remembering another matter, the aunt cleared her throat: โYes.โ
โGo on.โ
The housekeeper glanced left and right, covering the phoneโs mic as she lowered her voice. โMr. Argent, I felt something was off this morning. Ms. Hustonโs phone kept ringing nonstopโdozens of calls from unknown numbers.โ
โI asked Ms. Huston about it, but she wouldnโt explain,โ she added, warily eyeing the direction Alarieka had gone. Only after confirming Alarieka was out of sight did she continue, relieved,
โSeriously, those unknown numbers kept flooding in. Ms. Huston blocked them one after another, but more just kept coming. Iโm sure itโs a scamโtheyโre after her money.โ
โBut sheโs just a high school student! Where would she get money besides what her parents give her? If she gets scammed, itโd be disastrous! I urged her to fix this ASAP. I wanted to help, but no matter what I asked, she shut me out.โ
โSo I begged her to reach out to you. I pleaded forever, talked till my throat went dry, but she refused. I couldnโt just watch her get tricked, so here I am. What should we do?โ
She spoke rapidly, pausing to catch her breath after her long rant.
Had Alarieka heard this, sheโd have laughed. Even now, the housekeeper still believed those calls were scams.
She waited, expecting a grave or urgent response from Kieran. Instead, his tone sounded almost casual.
โI know.โ
The housekeeper froze, disbelief washing over her. She pressed harder,
โMr. Argent, this is serious! Earlier I saw onlineโcountless people are sharing Ms. Hustonโs number! That means scammers have her personal details. Theyโre cunning; police say they tailor scams to each victim. Sheโs in real danger! We must act fast!โ
โBesides, sheโs out alone right now. What if more scam calls come? Sheโs just a studentโhow can she handle professional fraudsters?โ
โIโve heard storiesโonce moneyโs stolen, even police canโt get it back. Right?โ
Kieran gave a noncommittal โHmm.โ
Frustrated and puzzled, the housekeeper held back. Sheโd done her part. If things went south now, it wasnโt on her. Sheโd genuinely warned Alarieka multiple times. If neither Alarieka nor Kieran cared, why should she, an outsider, stress?
Her mind made up, her tone lightened. โWell, Mr. Argent, thatโs all. May Iโโ
Suddenly, she recalled Alariekaโs earlier words.
Hesitating briefly, she debated whether to tell him.
After a pause, she decided.
After all, these arenโt my words. Ms. Huston said them. Not my problem.
โMr. Argent, thereโs one more thingโฆโ
โSpeak.โ
The auntโs tone wasnโt as confident as before; instead, it sounded shaky.
โJust now, I advised Ms. Huston to ask you about those strange calls, but she refused and even said somethingโฆโ
