Listen to this chapter:

Jaylene: โ€œWow, such a gentleman!โ€

Shi Yao replied: โ€œOf course. Iโ€™m not someone who kicks at the drop of a hat.โ€

Alarieka saw black.

Nie Guanyu cautiously pulled back his neck, whispering: โ€œThis handsomeโ€ฆ guy, Alaricka and I really are just friends. Itโ€™s not what you think.โ€

Shi Yao glanced at his face, his expression finally easing: โ€œBetter be.โ€

Alaricka snapped: โ€œJust shut up already.โ€

Jaylene teased: โ€œDonโ€™t be shy! Heโ€™s a total catchโ€“totally normal youโ€™d fall for him. No big deal. I get it.โ€

Alarieka: โ€ฆ.

She grabbed the textbook Nie Guanyu bought, lowered her head, and started reading line by line, tuning out the world.

She recognized every word, but none registered.

Suddenly, a slender hand reached from beside her, pulling the textbook away.

Alaricka reacted instantly, slapping her palm down on the book. She glared at Shi Yao: โ€œWhat now?โ€

Shi Yao raised an innocent brow: โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with looking?โ€

Alarieka smiled coldly: โ€œGiven ourโ€ฆ less than peaceful relationship, Iโ€™d advise against touching my things.โ€

Shi Yao tugged at the book: โ€œFine. This distance works tooโ€“I can still see clearly.โ€

Alarieka yanked the book back, deliberately turning her body to block his view.

Jaylene chimed in: โ€œItโ€™s just some bookโ€”โ€

โ€œComputer Principles?โ€ Shi Yao said.

Alarieka froze, glancing down to confirm the book lay open facing herโ€”impossible for him to see the title from his angle. She whipped her head around.

Nie Guanyu voiced her suspicion: โ€œYou can tell?โ€

Three pairs of eyes fixed on Shi Yao. He lifted a corner of his mouth, feigning nonchalance: โ€œJust something I read in elementary school. Recognized it after seeing it so many times.โ€

Nie Guanyu murmured: โ€œElementary school?โ€

Shi Yao sipped his coffee, eyebrow arched as if stating the obvious: โ€œYeah. I started learning computers in grade school. Didnโ€™t you?โ€

Jaylene Irwin, Nie Guanyu: โ€ฆ

Alarieka: Seriously? Heโ€™s putting on airs already?

Nie Guanyu got a bit worked up: โ€œOf course weโ€™re not.โ€

Shi Yao asked: โ€œThen what are you doing?โ€

Nie Guanyu, being honest to a fault, spilled everything before Alarieka could stop him. โ€œI majored in computer science in college. Iโ€™ve graduated and work now. Alaricka and Jaylene said they wanted to learn too, so Iโ€™ve been teaching them. Theyโ€™re quick learnersโ€“almost finished with this textbook already.โ€

Shi Yao raised an eyebrow, looking smug: โ€œJust starting now?โ€

Alaricka finally cut in: โ€œNone of your business.โ€

Nie Guanyu, whoโ€™d been about to explain, promptly shut his mouth.

Shi Yao snorted, leaning back against the cushions: โ€œWasnโ€™t that your college major?โ€

Alarieka pursed her lips.

Jaylene blinked: โ€œDidnโ€™t you know, handsome?โ€

Shi Yao asked: โ€œKnow what?โ€

Jaylene glanced at the visibly uncomfortable Alarieka, suppressing a grin: โ€œSheโ€™s taking the National College Entrance Examination in a few months. Still a high school seniorโ€“hasnโ€™t started college yet.โ€

The air in the space seemed frozen for an eternity. Shi Yao appeared almost catatonic until Jaylene Irwin spoke, then he slowly turned to look at Alarieka, staring for a long while.

โ€œHigh school senior?โ€

Jaylene nodded earnestly.

Shi Yao glanced at Nie Guanyu, who also nodded with sincerity.

Frowning at Alarieka, Shi Yao demanded, โ€œYouโ€™re still a senior?โ€

Alaricka arched an eyebrow. โ€œGot a problem with that?โ€

Abruptly, Shi Yao checked his phone, and his brow furrowed deeper.

โ€œItโ€™s Wednesday. School hours. Why arenโ€™t you in class?โ€

Alaricka shrugged. โ€œNone of your business. I go where I please.โ€

Jaylene spoke for her: โ€œSheโ€™s exceptionally well academically. The school permits her independent study.โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s gaze turned complicated. โ€œHow old is she?โ€

Jaylene beamed. โ€œRelax, sheโ€™s eighteen. Legally an adult.โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s frown remained. Just as Alaricka braced for criticism about skipping school, she heard his frustrationโ€“laden voice: โ€œShouldnโ€™t seniors focus on academics?โ€
