Listen to this chapter:

Five years of hiding was enough.

At 10 PM, Alarieka left the near-empty office tower. Reaching the parking garage, she spotted a familiar car flashing hazard lights. No guessing needed. That car belonged to Yao originally, but after losing a bet to Alarieka, Yao forfeited it as the stake. Later, when Shi Yao fixed a deeply hidden bug, as a reward, she gave the car back to him. Shi Yao refused to take it, so Alarieka had no choice but to park it at the company building, telling him to use it whenever needed. Once, Shi Yao urgently needed the car and drove it away. Eventually, more things happenedโ€“like Alariekaโ€™s car breaking down. Frugal by nature and without another vehicle, she had to drive this one to a dinner party. Back and forth it went, leaving both unable to clarify who truly owned the car. Now, either could drive it anytime.

Alarieka texted her driver to head home first and bring the car to her residential neighborhood tomorrow. She walked over, smoothly opening the passenger door: โ€œSince when do you pick me up? Thought you feared Iโ€™d make you work overtime?โ€

Though they often bickered, Shi Yao stayed silent this time: โ€œHowโ€™s user feedback now?โ€

Buckling her seatbelt, Alarieka replied, โ€œFine. No other bugs found yet.โ€

Shi Yao gave a noncommittal hum, starting the engine without another word. Exhausted, Alarieka leaned back, gazing blankly at passing headlights.

After a long pause, Shi Yao finally spoke: โ€œAlarieka, did you secure Black and White Rabbitโ€™s game rights?โ€

Her eyes flickered. โ€œNo. Things changed.โ€

She turned, studying his profile against the headrest. Neon lights streaked across his face, deepening his features. In the dim cabin, she barely made out how his usually full lips were pressed tightโ€“as if stifling fury.

โ€œWhat changed?โ€

Alarieka watched him silently.

At a red light, Shi Yao snapped toward her: โ€œWhy so quiet?โ€ His tone was brittle.

Amused, she hummed. โ€œWhat do you know?โ€

Over the years, sheโ€™d recognized his sharp instincts. He surely knew her history with the Argent family and Kieran. To him and the Shis, her past wasnโ€™t hidden.

Shi Yaoโ€™s expression darkened further.

โ€œGreen light,โ€ she reminded.

Cut off mid-retort, he scowled and slammed the accelerator.

โ€œIf I donโ€™t ask, you wonโ€™t tell me?โ€

Alarieka arched an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™re not my employee. Why should I?โ€

โ€œSeriously?โ€ Shi Yaoโ€™s voice tightened. โ€œI promised you a month of work! Forgetting already?โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ She smirked. โ€œAnd who bolted early, scared Iโ€™d keep him overtime?โ€

He shifted uncomfortably. โ€œI had things to handle.โ€

Eyes fixed on taillights ahead, Alarieka hummed ambiguously. โ€œThen be a good little worker for me next time.โ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ Shi Yaoโ€™s voice dropped abruptly. โ€œThen tell me about the black and white rabbits.โ€

Alarieka figured there was no point hiding it from Shi Yao. With Shi Yaoโ€™s capabilities, sheโ€™d find out sooner or later anyway. So she spilled everything in one go. The more Shi Yao heard, the deeper her frown became. โ€œSo what are you planning to do?โ€

Alarieka looked out the car window, answering lazily, โ€œYou mustโ€™ve already known about my past with Kieran Argent, right? Otherwise you wouldnโ€™t be in such a hurry.โ€

A flicker of panic flashed in Shi Yaoโ€™s eyes. โ€œI did know, but donโ€™t misunderstandโ€“I never investigated you. I justโ€ฆ happened to see it.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Alarieka said. โ€œKnowing is fine. I never intended to hide it anyway.โ€

What exactly is your relationship with Kieran Argent?

An ex-boyfriend?

Did you truly love Kieran Argent?

What happened between you two?

How long were you together?
