Listen to this chapter:

Kieran narrowed his eyes.

Alaricka froze for a second, glancing back at Kieran. She genuinely hadnโ€™t thought of that, but counting the days, it was indeed almost Kieran and Roseโ€™s anniversary.

Shiyao poked her forehead again, exasperated. โ€œI knew you forgot just by looking at you.โ€

With that, he gripped her shoulder, turning her body fully towards Kieran. Still keeping an arm draped casually over her shoulder, Shiyaoโ€™s voice held apology. โ€œMr. Argent, my apologies. I forgot to remind Alaricka about this. When your anniversary comes, weโ€™ll definitely send the gift over.โ€

Alaricka acknowledged the oversight. She added, โ€œThat was my oversight. Iโ€™ll make it up to you, Mr. Argent.โ€

Shi Yao nodded, patting her shoulder. โ€œRight, thatโ€™s more like it.โ€ As he spoke, his gaze casually met Kieran Argentโ€™s.

Kieran lifted his chin slightly, eyes fixed on Shi Yaoโ€™s arm around Alaricka. His gaze turned colder. โ€œNo need.โ€

Shi Yao caught Kieranโ€™s stare and tightened his hold on Alarickaโ€™s shoulder with a smile. โ€œHow could we not? Alaricka and I have always heard how exceptionally devoted Mr. Argent is to his wife. We truly admire your deep bond. Besidesโ€ฆโ€ He paused meaningfully. โ€œAlaricka needs your help with something this time. We absolutely canโ€™t neglect Mrs. Argent.โ€

Alaricka shot Shi Yao a skeptical glance. In five years, heโ€™d never spoken soโ€ฆ normally. Usually, his โ€œsincereโ€ talk dripped with backhanded remarks. His hostility toward Kieran was palpable.

โ€œI said,โ€ Kieranโ€™s voice lowered with casual certainty, โ€œno preparations. Just have Alaricka return to the Argent family in a few days.โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s expression froze. He looked down at Alaricka. โ€œYouโ€™re going back?โ€

Alaricka nodded calmly. โ€œMr. Argent, Iโ€™ll deliver your wedding anniversary gift soon. We wonโ€™t trouble you further today.โ€

Shi Yao whispered urgently, โ€œAre you serious?โ€

Alaricka gave a slight nod without explanation.

Mr. Argentโ€™s eyes flicked again to Shi Yaoโ€™s arm around her. โ€œFine. But do you need assistance?โ€

Alaricka smiled faintly. โ€œNo need. Please attend to your business. I can handle this myself.โ€

This time, Kieran left without hesitation. Watching his car disappear, Alaricka turned to the driver. โ€œGlenn, stop checking. If you canโ€™t find the issue, call professionals. Get a tow truck first. Stay with the carโ€“Iโ€™ll take a ride back.โ€

Glenn wiped his brow. โ€œYes, maโ€™am. Travel safely.โ€

Nodding, Alaricka pulled out her phone to book a ride. Just as she opened the app, a hand snatched it away.

She lowered her arm, palm open at her side. โ€œGive it back.โ€

Shi Yao locked the screen and shoved it into her hand. The moment she took it, his fingers clamped around her wrist, yanking her in the opposite direction.

His strides were hurried. Alaricka struggled to keep up, his grip bruising her wrist. She frowned. โ€œShi Yao, what are you doing?โ€

He stayed silent until they reached a street corner. Then he whirled abruptlyโ€”

Alaricka gasped as the world spun. An instant later, her back hit the brick wall. She squeezed her eyes shut, then opened them.

Between her skull and the rough surface, Shi Yaoโ€™s palm pressed protectively. His face was stormy, lowered eyes burning into hers. A tight line sealed his lips, radiating displeasure.

The near-interrogation stance made Alaricka bristle. She refused to indulge him. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong now?โ€

His voice emerged hoarse, ragged with frustration. โ€œYouโ€™re really going to the Argent family with Kieran?โ€

Alaricka met his glare. โ€œYes. So what if I am?โ€

Shiyao pressed her lips together, nearly demanding: โ€œWhen did you decide this? Did Kieran force you? Do you really have to go?โ€

Alaricka frowned, tossing out impatiently: โ€œGot some grudge against that family?โ€
