Listen to this chapter:

Alaricka distractedly typed work replies on her phone, mumbling, โ€œHe kept harping about Kieran and Roschelle Whitakerโ€™s anniversary coming up, telling me to prepare gifts. All that passiveโ€“aggressive crapโ€”like heโ€™s got some vendetta against Kieran.โ€

Jaylene understood Shi Yaoโ€™s motives perfectly; they were crystal clear to her.

She stifled a laugh. โ€œOh, he definitely has a grudge.โ€

Alarieka looked up from her phone, surprised. โ€œYou know why?โ€

Jaylene smirked. โ€œDonโ€™t you?โ€

Alarieka grew more puzzled. โ€œNo? Whatโ€™s between them?โ€

Jaylene burst out laughing.

Alarieka frowned, utterly baffled. โ€œWhatโ€™s so funny?โ€

Jaylene barely contained her giggles, patting Alariekaโ€™s shoulder. โ€œNothing. Let Shi Yao explain. Iโ€™m not brave enoughโ€”heโ€™d throttle me.โ€

Alarieka eyed her suspiciously. โ€œWhat scheme are you two cooking up?โ€

Jaylene hummed. โ€œAnyway, I still say you should bring Shi Yao.โ€

Alarieka thought for a moment. โ€œGive me solid reasons why I must.โ€

Jaylene tapped her chin. โ€œShi Yao can outshine Kieran and Roschelle when they get all loveyโ€“doveyโ€”his face is way younger than Kieranโ€™s.โ€

Jaylene blinked. โ€œWell? Solid enough? What does our CEO Alarieka think?โ€

Alarieka deadpanned: โ€œDenied.โ€

Jaylene groaned dramatically.

Though Alarieka had โ€œdeniedโ€ the suggestion, when departure day came, she inexplicably brought Shi Yao along to the airport.

During the drive, Alarieka gazed out the window, propping her head on her hand while Shi Yao hummed behind her.

โ€œWhat a wonderful day, everythingโ€™s going myโ€”โ€

โ€œStop singing,โ€ Alarieka snapped, rubbing her temples. โ€œQuiet down.โ€

Silence fell instantly.

A moment later, featherโ€“light fingers brushed her wrist, trailing upward and raising goosebumps.

Alarieka swatted his hand away, glaring. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

Shi Yao leaned in close, eyes crinkling with delight. โ€œIโ€™m so glad you brought me.โ€

Alarieka kept her voice icy. โ€œDonโ€™t get too excited yet.โ€

He ignored her entirely, humming again. โ€œAlarieka, youโ€™re way too good to me.โ€

Alarieka shut her eyes. โ€œShut up.โ€

The distance between the magic city and the capital isnโ€™t too far, just a few hours by plane.

As Alarieka Huston and Shi Yao stepped out of the airport terminal, a young man in a suit approached themโ€”his refined features stern, unmistakably Kieran Argentโ€™s assistant.

โ€œMs. Huston, Mr. Argentโ€™s car is waiting at the entrance. If convenient, we can take you directly to the Argentโ€™s villa now.โ€

Shi Yao held Alariekaโ€™s luggage while she stood emptyโ€“handed, her tone detached. โ€œPlease inform Mr. Argent I have prior engagements. Iโ€™ll attend his anniversary celebration at the villa tonight and present my gift then.โ€

The assistant hesitated. โ€œMs. Huston, Mr. Argent insisted I escort you back today. He wishes you to stay at the villa these daysโ€”your room is prepared. Would you reconsiderโ€ฆโ€

Before Alarieka could respond, Shi Yao slid an arm around her shoulders, grinning. โ€œOur apologies, but urgent matters call. Surely Mr. Argent wonโ€™t mind?โ€

The assistant stammered, โ€œButโ€”โ€

Shi Yao tightened his hold. โ€œLetโ€™s go. What are we waiting for?โ€

With Alariekaโ€™s nod, he guided her toward the exit.

Near the VIP gate, a black Bentleyโ€™s window slid down. Narrow, obsidian eyes watched the striking pairโ€”their silhouettes sharp against the terminal lightsโ€”while chiseled features remained partially obscured in the carโ€™s gloom.

The assistant approached from the side. โ€œMr. Argent, Ms. Huston said sheโ€™ll come tonight.โ€

Kieranโ€™s voice chilled the air. โ€œGot it.โ€

The assistant exhaled, stealing a glance through the rearview mirror.

Thank god. He doesnโ€™t seem angry.

Yet the open window framed Kieranโ€™s unwavering gaze on the distant figures.

He came personally for her? And she refused? Unbelievable.

Wiping his brow, the assistant whispered, โ€œShall we leave, sir?โ€

As the pair entered their car, Kieranโ€™s eyelids lowered like drawn curtains. โ€œProceed.โ€

Midโ€“journey, Kieran glanced at his phone. โ€œDetour to fetch Yuanyuan first.โ€
