Listen to this chapter:

Kieranโ€™s gaze was dark and icy, his thin lips pressed into a line as he watched her calmly. Beside him, Rose clung affectionately to his arm. Kieranโ€™s son stood behind him, clutching his fatherโ€™s leg while pouting and eyeing Alarieka with wary suspicion. This group had been making a scene for some time; no one knew when the three Argents had arrived or how much theyโ€™d overheard.

Alariekaโ€™s voice remained flat: โ€œMr. Argent. Mrs. Argent.โ€

Roseโ€™s lips curved with an amused glint: โ€œAlarieka brought her boyfriend home. Planning to introduce him to Grandpa?โ€ All eyes fixed on Alarieka. Alarieka stared directly at Roseโ€™s smile. The implication was crystal clear. Rose had likely feared Alarieka might steal Kieran. Now, learning she had a โ€œboyfriend,โ€ relief washed over Rose โ€“ one less threat to her marriage.

Alarieka arched a brow at Kieran, her tone cool: โ€œPity. My own grandfather died shortly after I was born.โ€

Dead silence fell. The crowd gaped, shock and disbelief written across their faces. Everyone knew exactly whose grandfather Rose meant: Wallace Argent. Alariekaโ€™s words were nothing short of a public slap to the Argent patriarchโ€™s face. Ignoring their stunned expressions, Alarieka continued: โ€œBut given the chance, Iโ€™d certainly take him to visit the gravesite.โ€ The room held its breath, utterly still. This was Argent territory. None dared voice such thoughts, let alone intervene.

Rose nearly pitied Alariekaโ€™s foolishness, her eyes softening with condescension: โ€œAlarieka, youโ€™re clever. You know exactly which grandfather I mean.โ€

Alariekaโ€™s lips curled: โ€œEven if I wanted to acknowledge him, would he accept me? Everyone knows I was kicked out years ago. What right do I have to call him Grandpa now?โ€

Kieranโ€™s eyes narrowed.

Alarieka met his gaze: โ€œYou were there that day, Mr. Argent. Surely you remember me being thrown out to a rental apartment?โ€ Kieran remained silent.

Shiyao murmured: โ€œAlarieka.โ€

Alarieka flashed Kieran a smile before extending her hand to Shiyao: โ€œGive me the gift.โ€ Heโ€™d held it since they arrived. Taking the package, she approached Rose and offered it.

โ€œGot so caught up talking I almost forgot. A small anniversary gift for you both. Nothing fancy โ€“ hope itโ€™s not beneath you.โ€

Roseโ€™s eyes crinkled with a smile as she accepted the gift. โ€œWeโ€™re family, no need for formalities.โ€

Alarieka spoke softly, โ€œWith gifts come blessings. May you share lasting happiness.โ€ Her gaze locked with Kieranโ€™s as she added meaningfully, โ€œI trust Mr. Argent remembers our promise.โ€

Roseโ€™s smile faltered momentarily. โ€œWhat promise did you two make, Kieran?โ€

Alarieka gave a mysterious smile. โ€œWhy not ask Mr. Argent yourself, Ms. Whitaker? If he wonโ€™t tell you, neither can I.โ€

Rose drew a breath, forcing her smile wider. โ€œItโ€™s fine. Kieran knows his limits. I trust him.โ€

Alarieka arched an eyebrow. โ€œHow remarkably devoted you two are.โ€

โ€œAlarieka.โ€ Kieranโ€™s voice cut through. She acknowledged with a hum.

โ€œGrandfather expects you in the study,โ€ he stated coolly.

Alarieka nodded. โ€œUnderstood.โ€ Turning to Shi Yao, she said, โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s eyes lit up instantly. โ€œIโ€™ll come with you.โ€

Kieranโ€™s brow furrowed, his dark eyes sweeping over Shi Yao. โ€œHe stays.โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s expression darkened, his glare icy as it clashed with Kieranโ€™s. Electric tension crackled between them. Alarieka raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhy? Heโ€™s not an outsider.โ€

โ€œHas romance addled your judgment?โ€ Kieranโ€™s frown deepened.

โ€œNot particularly,โ€ she replied.

His obsidian eyes bored into her. This concerned the critical Black-White Rabbit game rights.

Alarieka turned to soothe Shi Yao. โ€œWait here. I wonโ€™t be long.โ€ Shi Yaoโ€™s face visibly shadowed. After struggling silently, he leaned in to whisper bitterly, โ€œHurry back. Iโ€™ll wait.โ€

Alarieka patted his head. โ€œGood boy.โ€
