Kieranโs gaze was dark and icy, his thin lips pressed into a line as he watched her calmly. Beside him, Rose clung affectionately to his arm. Kieranโs son stood behind him, clutching his fatherโs leg while pouting and eyeing Alarieka with wary suspicion. This group had been making a scene for some time; no one knew when the three Argents had arrived or how much theyโd overheard.
Alariekaโs voice remained flat: โMr. Argent. Mrs. Argent.โ
Roseโs lips curved with an amused glint: โAlarieka brought her boyfriend home. Planning to introduce him to Grandpa?โ All eyes fixed on Alarieka. Alarieka stared directly at Roseโs smile. The implication was crystal clear. Rose had likely feared Alarieka might steal Kieran. Now, learning she had a โboyfriend,โ relief washed over Rose โ one less threat to her marriage.
Alarieka arched a brow at Kieran, her tone cool: โPity. My own grandfather died shortly after I was born.โ
Dead silence fell. The crowd gaped, shock and disbelief written across their faces. Everyone knew exactly whose grandfather Rose meant: Wallace Argent. Alariekaโs words were nothing short of a public slap to the Argent patriarchโs face. Ignoring their stunned expressions, Alarieka continued: โBut given the chance, Iโd certainly take him to visit the gravesite.โ The room held its breath, utterly still. This was Argent territory. None dared voice such thoughts, let alone intervene.
Rose nearly pitied Alariekaโs foolishness, her eyes softening with condescension: โAlarieka, youโre clever. You know exactly which grandfather I mean.โ
Alariekaโs lips curled: โEven if I wanted to acknowledge him, would he accept me? Everyone knows I was kicked out years ago. What right do I have to call him Grandpa now?โ
Kieranโs eyes narrowed.
Alarieka met his gaze: โYou were there that day, Mr. Argent. Surely you remember me being thrown out to a rental apartment?โ Kieran remained silent.
Shiyao murmured: โAlarieka.โ
Alarieka flashed Kieran a smile before extending her hand to Shiyao: โGive me the gift.โ Heโd held it since they arrived. Taking the package, she approached Rose and offered it.
โGot so caught up talking I almost forgot. A small anniversary gift for you both. Nothing fancy โ hope itโs not beneath you.โ
Roseโs eyes crinkled with a smile as she accepted the gift. โWeโre family, no need for formalities.โ
Alarieka spoke softly, โWith gifts come blessings. May you share lasting happiness.โ Her gaze locked with Kieranโs as she added meaningfully, โI trust Mr. Argent remembers our promise.โ
Roseโs smile faltered momentarily. โWhat promise did you two make, Kieran?โ
Alarieka gave a mysterious smile. โWhy not ask Mr. Argent yourself, Ms. Whitaker? If he wonโt tell you, neither can I.โ
Rose drew a breath, forcing her smile wider. โItโs fine. Kieran knows his limits. I trust him.โ
Alarieka arched an eyebrow. โHow remarkably devoted you two are.โ
โAlarieka.โ Kieranโs voice cut through. She acknowledged with a hum.
โGrandfather expects you in the study,โ he stated coolly.
Alarieka nodded. โUnderstood.โ Turning to Shi Yao, she said, โLetโs go.โ
Shi Yaoโs eyes lit up instantly. โIโll come with you.โ
Kieranโs brow furrowed, his dark eyes sweeping over Shi Yao. โHe stays.โ
Shi Yaoโs expression darkened, his glare icy as it clashed with Kieranโs. Electric tension crackled between them. Alarieka raised an eyebrow. โWhy? Heโs not an outsider.โ
โHas romance addled your judgment?โ Kieranโs frown deepened.
โNot particularly,โ she replied.
His obsidian eyes bored into her. This concerned the critical Black-White Rabbit game rights.
Alarieka turned to soothe Shi Yao. โWait here. I wonโt be long.โ Shi Yaoโs face visibly shadowed. After struggling silently, he leaned in to whisper bitterly, โHurry back. Iโll wait.โ
Alarieka patted his head. โGood boy.โ
