Melody spoke earnestly, but no one seemed to believe her. Drake asked, “Is that so?” “Yes, it is.” “Well, that’s a shame.” Drake’s sudden appearance and cryptic words sent Melody’s heart racing. Debra observed the scene with equal confusion. It was hard to guess Drake’s real intention. Sophie said, “Well, I’ll head over to greet the guests now.” Debra nodded.

Once Sophie walked off, Debra pulled on a mask, adjusted her appearance, and strolled in a direction where Drake would see her. Sure enough, he spotted her in the crowd. “Kale, we’ve done what we came for. Let’s go.” “Yes, boss,” Kale replied. Without so much as a goodbye to Melody, Drake turned on his heel and walked away.

Melody was confused. Drake’s visit had no apparent purpose, yet he left almost as quickly as he arrived. Debra blocked his path when Drake stepped out of the hall. “Mr. Lowe.” Drake glanced at her, taking in her understated appearance. She wore a black mask and a casual cap. Her hair was left loose, and she didn’t seem to have bothered with makeup. She looked like someone out for a weekend stroll, not someone attending a funeral.

“What do you want?” “Are you close to Shelia?” “Never met her.” “Then why are you here?” Drake wasn’t the type to waste time at someone’s funeral without a reason. Something was off.

“And what’s it to you?” he retorted. “Weren’t you here to poke your nose into things too?” “Are you here to find Juan?” “Aren’t you?” Debra crossed her arms and said, “Can we be honest with each other? No lies, no secrets. Deal?”

“Okay.” “You go first.”

“Well, my company has some dealings with the Nichols Group. To be precise, it’s business between Juan and me. But I’m not at liberty to share the details. He vanished after returning to Seamar City, so I came here to try my luck and see if I could find him. There are things I need to discuss with him.”

Debra tried to pry into it, but Drake raised a hand. “Don’t bother. I know what you want to ask, but as I said, I can’t tell you about the details.” Debra was annoyed, and Drake added, “Your turn. Why are you looking for Juan?”

Debra replied sanctimoniously, “Me? I miss him. I came to try my luck too.”

“What?” Drake exclaimed. “Does Marion know about this?”

Debra hadn’t expected him to take her joke seriously, but seeing his reaction, she decided to double down. She gave his shoulder a solemn pat and said, “Do me a favor and keep it from Marion.”
