Garland jumped in fright and almost tumbled down the stairs. His jaw dropped when he saw Juan standing there. “You got caught too?”

Barton glanced at them before sensibly stepping away to give them space. His actions further confirmed Garland’s guess.

He dragged Juan to a quiet corner and bombarded him with questions. “How did you walk into their trap? What do they plan to do with you? What’s your situation now? Are they going to lock you up with me? Should we pretend we don’t know each other?”

Though he’d only been in this house for a few days, he had realized that every single resident was shrewd and cunning. Outmaneuvering them was just mission impossible.

Juan said calmly, “No one can know I’m here, especially not Debra. Got it?”

“Why not? Didn’t you come back for her? Why do something good and keep it a secret?” Garland leaned in and whispered, “And about that wife-killing thing… Is it true or false? It’s all over the news. I don’t want to believe it, but knowing your temper, I can’t rule it out. Did you really kill her?”

“It was me,” Juan admitted honestly.

Garland’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You killed Shelia?”

“Scared?” Juan smirked.

“Not really!”

Garland scratched his head. “Not really.”

In the Eaton family, he had seen plenty of violent and dangerous situations before. He hadn’t participated in them, but he was not clueless.

“I might disappear for a while. Just play your part well here. Don’t let Debra notice anything’s off.”

“Wait, play a part? What part?”

“Just be yourself.”

Before leaving, Juan reminded him again, “Don’t tell anyone you saw me.”

Garland was dazed and muttered to himself, “What? What does that even mean?”

The next morning, Pedro didn’t send anyone over.

Frustrated, Debra decided to head to the police station. To her surprise, Barton was standing at the exit.

“Mrs. Houston, where are you off to in such a hurry?”

“The police station for some answers.”

Debra was about to step past him when Barton blocked her path.

“No need to go. Juan isn’t at the station.”

“What do you mean?”

“Mr. Andrew Potter has asked them earlier. Juan was taken away by his family. By now, he’s probably escaped.”

After all, there were plenty of witnesses to him wielding a knife. Even if it didn’t prove he killed Shelia, it was still a huge scandal for the Nichols family. Juan’s best option was running away from legal consequences.

“Escaped?”

“Yes.”

“Are you kidding me?”
