In the afternoon, Debra returned to the Potter Mansion. The maids were cleaning up the messy living room. Debra raised an eyebrow and asked, “Did we get robbed?” With the Potter family’s level of security, it didn’t seem likely.

The maid hurried over. “Mrs. Houston, you’re finally back. Mr. Andrew Potter wants you to see him in the study. He has something important to discuss with you.”

Debra nodded and quickly headed upstairs. When she opened the door, she found Barton holding a stack of bills. He asked, “Cash or credit card?”

Debra was puzzled. “Is this why you want to see me?”

Seated at his desk, Andrew replied, “Rules are rules, even for friends. Someone has to pay for what Marion smashed.”

Debra slapped her hand against her forehead. “I’ll go with the card.” All of Marion’s assets, including his bank cards, were in her possession. She pulled one out and felt a tiny sting in her heart when the money was deducted.

Determined to confront Marion, she said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving now.”

Andrew called after her, “Did you go to see Juan?”

Debra paused and turned back. “I came back empty-handed, as you expected.”

Andrew shrugged, and his smile felt punchable. “You won’t be seeing Juan, and taking over the Nichols Group will be harder than you think.”

“What do you mean?” Debra pressed.

By now, the rumors about Juan murdering Shelia were everywhere. On her way back, she even saw a photo of Juan being arrested. Public opinion was already painting him as a murderer, demanding legal consequences. If there hadn’t been a lack of evidence, Juan might have already been thrown into jail. Falling from grace, Juan was no longer fit to be the president of the Nichols Group. To maintain its public image and stabilize the stock price, the shareholders would surely ask him to step down.

She could easily swoop in and take over the company. That was what Andrew had once told her. But now, he was saying the opposite.

Andrew’s smile deepened. “Ever heard of the Buchan family?”

Debra recalled it. “You mean Juan’s mother, Claudia, and her family?”

“Exactly,”

“What do they have to do with me taking control of the Nichols Group?”

In her past life, the Buchan family and the Nichols family had little connection. Even holidays and festivals hadn’t brought them together. They had been like strangers to each other. She couldn’t figure out what kind of role the Buchans could play in this.

Andrew explained, “The Buchan family used to keep a low profile in Seamar City. In fact, they have moved abroad. They might not be a prestigious family, but they’ve got a solid inheritance. After Claudia Buchan married into the Nichols family, she was in poor health. She died shortly after giving birth to Juan. Juan’s father, grieving for her, passed away from depression. The two families severed ties after that, but the Buchans won’t stand by idly if something happens to the Nichols.”
